I'm tempted to go back through the final results thread to see if 'Ti Amo' or 'Promises' received any points from Ojnoj. If not, I'll be very unhappy. :P

Nope, neither did, I hosted that contest so I just looked it up on my spreadsheet for that contest :P

Jonjo and Hits' compilations sound great too :D Might have a few to download once the deadline's done :o
They do :o Anyway I'm working on my review now. There's no word limit is there? Because it looks like it's going to be pretty epic :kink:
Jonjo was clearly paying attention in XXXVI then if Ti Amo and Promises both vaguely or completely slipped his mind
Haha. At least I recognised 'Ti Amo' :( 'Promises'... I honestly don't know why I didn't give it points, considering it was quite a weak contest for me. Maybe it didn't impact me as it was against pop and urban songs like Ciara, Pia Toscano and JoJo which is much more my "thing". So it stood out on this CD as it was against songs which sound similar to each other, for me? I dunno. But I'm sure I'll amend that come the Best of :P

Weak :o It's one of my favourite recent contests, certainly the highest quality one that I feel like I've hosted - an amazing, definitive and high quality top two and two more excellent songs in 3rd and 4th which probably would have won it in a weaker month...

For me it was last month's contest that lacked any particular 'wow' moments, and the final results weren't exactly in line with my personal tastes either like the top end of the scoreboard usually seems to be

It's review o'clock :w00t: I received Oops... Jeg Gjorde Det Igen which already had me jumping to conclusions about who put it together

After that the first thing I noticed about this CD was that all the tracks are arranged strictly by length order... maybe it's an OCD :kink:

Track reviews

1. This is quite a mellow indie-ish acoustic song, I really like the intro and the vocals, but the lyrics are a bit off-putting "maybe if I shaved my pussy for you then you'd love me" - sung by a guy  Some kind of spooky synth-work in the chorus. 6/10 but an instrumental would be an 8/10.

2. Sounds like a less hardcore version of Rammstein but I think it's in Danish. Quite a cool 80s vibe. In fact I don't mind it at all. 8.5/10

3. This is a remix of Ghetto Ass Witch by Ritualz (†‡†). I actually prefer the production of this more than the original, it's quite dubsteppy but with 80s style keys. Unfortunately the vocals are still horrible. 6.5/10

4. Trackshittaz - Oida Taunz. LOVE this. This was an entry in the Austrian (?) selection for Eurovision this year. Reminds me a bit of Stromae - Alors On Danse. I really wish it had gone to Berlin rather than Nadine Bieber (sic). 10/10

5. Don't know what this is, is it called Cottages? I love the arrangement with the violins and pizzicato strings. The guy's voice is nice too. Quite indie, but indie with attitude, if that makes sense. Lots of male vocals on this album so far. 9.5/10

6. COLD. MESS. It sounds like it samples what could have been a good song once upon a time (Alphaville or A-Ha maybe?) but in the end it just sounds like a computer crashing. Valley girl talking about nothing towards the end doesn't improve it. 3/10

7. This is The Weeknd isn't it? Oh yeah, Rolling Stone. I LOVE his voice and I love that he's making music that's still urban but at the same time as being experimental and a bit indie. A Bootsy Collins for our times. Anyway this song is really mellow but quite dark too. 10/10

8. WOW. I'm sure I've heard this before, it seems instantly familiar. "My heart is in the shadow of the creatures they've turned into". OK, I cheated, it's Black Butterflies, a demo for Rihanna that (I guess) she didn't record. Why was this not on Rated R? "How do I kill these butterflies, terrorising me inside"? AMAZING. 10/10

9. Another one I recognise almost instantly, It's Stromae - House'llelujah. Alors On Danse was in my top 3 songs of last year, and I'm still not over how it bombed over here. Had it sold more than 3 copies in the UK, this would have made an EPIC follow up, they should have skipped the disappointing Te Quiero. Seriously when Erik Hassle and Kanye West jump on a record, HOW could people ignore it? [/rantmodeoff] 10/10

10. "Michael Jackson, a million dollars". No idea. The intro is really discordant, and the first time I heard it, I had trouble getting the whole way through. "Yeah, I'm f***ing great at rapping". Um, no you're not. "Me no speaky spanish, valium or caesar salad". It's utterly batshit frankly. Kind of a grower, but somehow more listenable on headphones than out loud. 8/10

11. Well THIS is a change of pace. I'm pretty sure it's in Danish again. Minimal instrumentation, and a kind of record crackle, that I only noticed when listening on headphones. After the first verse the instrumentation builds, and it starts to sound quite celtic, although I couldn't tell you which instruments they're actually using. Pan flute? Gooddelta would go mental for this. Female vocals, kind of Bjorky. Personally I think it's very nice. 9/10

12. This is in Danish again if I’m not mistaken. Indian style drums and 80sish synths. The downside again unfortunately is the vocals. They have been treated to make them sound lower, and it sounds like some kind of cartoon giant. Nice choral ooh and aahs in the background, although it could just be synths. The swirly synth strings towards the end put it up from 7.5/10 to 8/10.

13. More Weeknd. Seriously this guy is amazing, I wish someone would sing The Birds (Pt. 1) on X Factor or something. I can’t remember what this is called though. Not my favourite track on his first mixtape, but still fucking awesome. 9/10

14. Female vocals again, and I really don’t have a clue what it is. Quite a dense production with glockenspiel, acoustic and electric guitars. I can’t tell if it’s a solo woman who’s overdubbed her voice on the track a number of times, or a group singing in harmony. Because of the multiple vocal tracks it’s hard to make out the lyrics anyway, and it doesn’t REALLY go anywhere, but it’s not bad. It breaks down a minute from the end leading me to realise that it’s mostly sample based. Doesn’t change anything though. 8/10

15. This is in Danish again right? High pitch male vocals on a somewhat traditional Indie rock track, almost reminds me of The Killers. At about the mid-point it breaks down and becomes much more mellow. I keep thinking he’s singing “talk to me”, but I presume he ain’t. Some nice keys on this actually. 8.5/10

16. A mellow, guitar and strings led instrumental, with some bass and piano. There’s something a bit Angelo Badalamenti (sp?) about it, like it could be on the soundtrack of Twin Peaks. It gets darker and then a counter melody comes in on bells and (even more) strings at the 2:30 mark. A bit of a builder. Nice, although it doesn’t really move me. Then it goes in a completely unexpected and epic direction in the last 45 seconds, which is worth another point. 8/10

17. Starts off with an odd 90s swing-house rhythm, but that doesn’t last for long, an additional kick-drum takes it back to the 2010s. Weird bell noises. And a general feeling of hypnoticness (if that is actually a word). Whiny black guy comes in at about 2:30. Odd but cool bassy sounds at 3:10, sounds like an old school fretless bass almost, the kind of thing that made Paul Young records tolerable. Inappropiate female opera singer at 6:30 almost totally spoils it for me. Oh is it Hercules & Love Affair? I loved their first album but never really checked out their second one. The last minute and a half goes mental with the vocals but the basic background pattern never changed, at least until the last thirty seconds. Basically I can imagine dancing to this at a club, but I’m not sure how often I’d want to listen to it at home. 7.5/10

Overall

9/10

While this compilation wasn’t exactly filled with the sort of music I would normally listen to by choice, I did make some nice discoveries here and enjoyed it a lot, particularly the mid-part. Sooooooo, one question remains, the question that is hidden in plain sight, doctor, who? Well my initial thought was Pavel given the mixture of weird indie tracks, Eurovision pop and Danish electro it would be Pavel. But Track 8 made me doubt a bit, I wouldn’t put Riri and Pavel in the same sentence in a million years. So I really don’t know. Le Vulker is my second guess…

Thank GOD that noise didn't go to Eurovision over Nadine 'mindblowing vox' Beiler! That's obviously Pavel's too, I agree.

Interested to see some the tracklist juding by those comments!

Sorry but even live that did nothing for me. Anna Rossinelli on the other hand...

Yeah it's going to be interesting :) I'm really hoping that someone can review mine soon?

Track 1 makes me think it's Pavel, I know what it is :P

And yeah, whoever's got mine (I won't say whether or not they say they've got it in the thread) best hurry and review mine :P

OK I've listened to this three times before but it's time to get my arse into gear and review mine whilst listening to it once more!

Music To Go Deaf To

01 - Listening to this song, I think I'd rather be deaf than hear this! It's the kind of hideous country-pop song that I'd usually turn off within half a minute of it starting but for the purpose of this I shall listen a few times. Unfortunately it doesn't get better with any more listens and I'd quite happily strangle whoever is singing it with her terrible, whiny squeaky voice. Fortunately, this is by some distance the low point of this album. I'll be kind and give it a 1/10 mark.

02 - Hearing the start of this one is a welcome relief, an electronic intro which turns into a decent pop song. It's a little bit run-of-the-mill but it's pleasant enough, the instrumentation is stronger than the vocals which are a bit generic female voice. As I say, nice enough but sounds too much like a lot of past BJSC entries. 6/10

03 - Another electro pop song, it starts off sounding like it could be by La Roux but thankfully it's not! I really like the verses to this but the chorus is a bit nothingy, and the high pitched falsetto-like voice he sings it in is a bit off putting as he sounds quite good elsewhere on the song, but repeated listens and I am now used to it. It kind of reminds me of something The Golden Filter might do. 7/10

04 - Unfortunately the 'oh oh oh's in the chrous of this remind me of 'She Makes Me Wanna' by JLS, which makes me realise that this is something that I could see them releasing, it's alright enough and would fit right in with the music that's hit the higher reaches of the UK chart this year. It's a reasonably decent europop influenced song that you'd be able to dance to. 5/10

05 - This is the first song here that I really like, it sounds like the more poppy end of Feist's material, it's nothing overly special but it's a good catchy pop song with a melody that gets stuck in my head after I listen to it. 9/10

06 - I don't know who this is but the voice on it sounds quite familiar and it annoys me who it is more everytime I listen to it, it's probably someone I've never heard before! Either way, I really like this one but it's perhaps a little long, it doesn't seem to go anywhere in the last minute, a 3 minute song it would be a very good pop song but at 4 minutes it just drags a little. 8/10

07 - I imagine this is called 'Written In The Stars' by how often it's said. This strikes me as a song I'd give 5 or 6 points to in a semi final of a contest, it's quite a good song even if I don't love it, for what it is it stands out quite a bit and is catchy without ever straying near annoyingly catchy. 8/10

08 - After three songs I enjoyed this is a reversion in quality. A male led europop/electropop song that just kind of plods along a bit without ever really going anywhere. It's too long and I don't particularly like his voice either. 3/10

09 - Oh this is rather good. I like this one a lot, her voice reminds me of Roisin Murphy's and it definitely sounds like something she might make if ever she was to have a fairly decent sized hit. 9/10

10 - I like the 'oooh's at the beginning of this, it reminds me of 'Go Outside' by Cults and her voice isn't too dissimilar either! It's quite a nice song, although the chorus sounds a bit chanty (for want of a better word). 7/10

11 - I'm guessing this is not the full version of this song and something has gone wrong somewhere. At 1:46 it's the shortest song on the album by over a minute and cuts off in the middle of a line. From what is here I really like, and I'm interested to hear more! 7/10

12 - This one is rather forgettable really, there's nothing about it that's particularly distinguishable or memorable, it's nice enough to listen to but it's just a bit of an inoffensive generic female pop song that doesn't go anywhere. 5/10

13 - This is a song which sounds alright to start with but I'm now on the 4th listen and the chorus has already begun to annoy me, it sticks in my head and not because I like it particularly, I have no idea who it is singing it but it could well be someone Disney, it sounds like it could well be. 4/10

14 - This is another I quite like but could be a little shorter, 8 seconds shy of 5 minutes and I do get a bit bored of it by the end, but it's definitely one for keeping. It's reasonably similar to some others on here but it also manages to stand out a bit, I like her voice quite a lot and the brass in it really adds to the song. 7/10

15 & 16 -

I'm not really sure what's gone wrong with these but they're not listenable at all, there's a horrible fuzzy distorted echo all over both of them which makes it hard to tell what the song is actually like. I don't know if it's just the way it's been ripped of it they're just really bad quality mp3s but I know they're not right as track 16 is 'Symphonies' by Dan Black which is a fantastic song but it definitely shouldn't sound this distorted. 15 sounds like MNDR but I can't really tell!

17 - This is another that I find a little generic. It's perfectly alright to listen to but it's not something I'm ever going to keep after this. 4/10

18 - The intro to this is wonderful, simple little individual electronic notes with a distorted vocal to open it. The way this builds up gradually is fantastic, there's not many vocals throughout the song and it makes a great instrumental. This is definitely my favourite song on here, it's essentially my thing really, a mix of indie, dance and pop with a distorted female vocal. Wonderful. 9/10

19 - To end it's a song in a foreign language, I have very little idea about any other languages but I'm certain that this is French because of the way it's pronounced the phrase "je suis" (sp) which could well be the title of the song. It's quite a nice song, very simple with a chorus that wants to stray into being anthemic. 7/10

Overall I'd say this is better than I imagined I'd get from a swap in the BJSC forum and probably a better review than the compiler will have imagine. I think the split of songs I shall keep and get rid of is probably even (9+9 with Dan Black which I already know), it's a decent compilation of differing pop songs which is good, it's essentially all from the same genre but at no point does it get boring and it makes for a varied compilation overall. I have no idea who made this, to me it doesn't really stand out as being by anyone in particular. C.R.? Liam? Le Vulker?

Yep, this is mine!

1. -

I was actually going to send this to Hits' contest, but chose Bon Iver instead. It's Rikke Lie who was on Norwegian Idol (or something like that). Definitely one for the pop fans, I tried to vary my CD a bit, so not too unhappy that you disliked it.

2. Van Go Lion - We Don't Miss a Single Beat

This is Van Go Lion; I don't know too much about them, but I discovered them via a blog and this was pretty good at the time. I was considering sending this once, but I think I sent Emma Acs instead. I agree it's pretty standard bjsc-fare, but still all right to listen to.

3. Sykur - Shed Those Tears

This is an Icelandic band Sykur; it was one of many that I was considering sending to Hits' contest. I didn't get the La Roux comparison when listening to it, but now that you've said it I can see it!

4. Christian TV - Love2Baby

Yeah, this does sound JLS-esque actually, which is a bit strange as I don't really like their output, whereas this I think is quite good. I was going to send this a couple of contests ago too, but I remember some others considering it, so used it here when no-one did send it.

5.

I'm glad you liked this, it's one of my favourites on here probably too. They're a German duo, and I know very little about them beyond that; I should probably try to listen to more of them.

6.

I heard this after hearing someone compare it to Ladyhawke - perhaps that's who you're thinking of? Anyway, while it's not as good as her best, it's still a pretty good indie-esque pop song.

7. Chelcee Grimes - Written in the Stars

lol, yeah it's not hard to guess the name to this. It's a good song, if repetitive, though I prefer 'Mannequin' of hers; there's only a preview of it though.

8. Markus Riva - Quiz

Shame you didn't like this - I actually really do like it, bar his accent which is a bit too strong (Latvian I think, but clearly Eastern European). I was actually going to send this instead of Vanbot, until I heard that, so it's quite an old reject.

9. Hay Hay - Come Down

I found this via scouring Scandinavian myspaces, pretty much the only good thing I've gotten from there. I was actually thinking of adding another of her songs, 'Infinity', but decided to keep to to 1 song per artist.

10.

This is Alex Winston, who I think was recently sent by Greenfroze? This is the only thing I've heard from her, but I actually really like it, even though I hated it at first.

11. Ash Koley - Brighter at Night

Sorry this cut out! I didn't realise it, I apologize! Anyway, I first found them around the time of BJSCfestivalen, as their songs due tend to be short (not to this extreme though).

12.

Yeah, I get how this is a bit generic, but it's all right. I was considering sending it to bjsc ages ago (i.e. several years), but just wanted to get it out of the way.

13. Empress - Hate Goodbyes

I just tried to find a link for these and couldn't, so I guess they're not doing much anymore. It was something I was thinking of sending ages ago once again, but just never got around to it; I think it was when I drifted away from the contest for a while.

14.

I do really like this, even if it's a bit long, and would have sent it to a contest were it not a year old when I'd found it. It's the most poppy of her material that I've heard, and my personal favourite.

15. MNDR - Cut Me Out

Sorry for the poor quality here and the next track! I hadn't realised it was such a bad quality file, and had to use a different programme so I could remove the info. Anyway, you guessed MNDR right.

16.

You got this right too, and was the thing that made me realise you had my CD! There's not much to say given you already know this one. other than that I heard it first through 'Easy A', later than everyone else seemingly.

17. Kristina Maria - Animal

I actually really like this, though I did choose this one for a more poppy listener.

18. DWNTWN - Hungry Hearts

I'm glad you like this, it's certainly my favourite on the CD. It is the same group that I entered this contest; I prefer this song, but it's less bjsc-friendly, so decided to send it here. As for the group, they're easily one of my favourite new acts of the moment, so I'm glad others like them!

19.

Yeah, this is French, though the singer is Moroccan (I think at least). The title means 'Woman of today' if my French is still good. It's another I heard a while back, but never got around to entering it. I can't help but notice similarities in the melody, particularly in the chorus, to 'Umbrella' by Rihanna, though I'm probably the only one!

Thanks for listening and reviewing! I did fear that you wouldn't like it when you said the first song was awful, so at least there's a good few songs you quite liked!

And the tracklist in full;

1. Rikke Lie - Good Girl

2. Van Go Lion - We Don't Miss a Single Beat

3. Sykur - Shed Those Tears

4. Christian TV - Love2Baby

5. Boy - Little Numbers

6. Freja Loeb - Never Stop Coming Back

7. Chelcee Grimes - Written in the Stars

8. Markus Riva - Quiz

9. Hay Hay - Come Down

10. Alex Winston - Sister Wife

11. Ash Koley - Brighter at Night

12. Bridget Tucker - Let Me In

13. Empress - Hate Goodbyes

14. Rai Knight - New New

15. MNDR - Cut Me Out

16. Dan Black - Symphonies

17. Kristina Maria - Animal

18. DWNTWN - Hungry Hearts

19. Sofia Essaidi - Femme d'aujourdhui

That looks like a really interesting CD, I can't wait for the links :)

I know who's got mine because they said the title that they had received at some point, I haven't seen them around the forum for a while though :(

Still posting the tracklist though, is the deadline tonight still or tomorrow now?

Yeah I know who's got mine too, and I'm pretty sure they'll love it, but I don't know where they are either :/

I'm pretty sure who's got mine will enjoy it, I just hope they review it!

Oh, and can you update me on the list Silas? I have reviewed :P

I'll post my tracklisting up on Tuesday then if it's not reviewed by tomorrow. Just so there's actually an incentive for people to download it when the links are sent out  Would like a review though, it took me a while to compile...
Just to remind whoever made it, I have Acoustica and WILL 100% definitely review it tomorrow afternoon!

It's review o'clock :w00t: I received Oops... Jeg Gjorde Det Igen which already had me jumping to conclusions about who put it together

HAI. Obviously it's mine.

1. Chad VanGaalen - Shave My Pussy

Cute little song from an amazing album. Can't say anything else. You either love it or hate it, I guess

2. Nephew - Danmark Man Dark

Last year I was obsessed with them, and this is the best song they've done yet. Chorus is incredible, production is amazing. Plus it's in danish indeed and I literally like everything danish!

3. ritualz - GHETTO ASS WITCH (FEAT. GVCCI-HVCCI) [VAGINA VANGI REMIX]

My favourite remix of the song, which was oretty much my ANTHEM in the first half of 2011. ritualz released two EPs solely containing remixes of this song. The first one is a lot better btw. Vagina Vangi is a russian witch-house band too. They are quite good for a russian band  BLEED A LOT ANEMIC I'M f***ING BULIMIC. Anthem or WHAT?!

4. Trackshittaz feat. Lukasm Plöchl - Oida Taunz!

ACCORDION. The song starts so well but it wears off by the end. I still included it though, as it's amazing and I needed something Eurovision in the compilation :D

5. Owen Pallett - Scandal At the Parkade

Owen Pallett deserves to be more popular than Britney Spears. He's infinitely better than the cow and pretty much 96% of all the artists around. AGE OF THE MULTI-INSTRUMENTALISTS BABY.

6. ritualz - MISERY WALK

How could I not include this?! Topped my chart for a few weeks and started my obsession with this band. The part with the girl talking is AMAZING. SHE SPEAKS SENSE (although I can't understand what she says half of the time).

7. The Weeknd - Rolling Stone

2nd best song on Thursday. The "I GOT YOU" parts are just mindblowingly beautiful. Especially in the last minute. STUNNING. Artist of the year. I literally have never been SO EXCITED about anyone's next album (except when it's 2 months until Bloc Party's next album comes out of course ).

8. Galgani - Black Butterflies

Gurl, this was NUMBER ONE in my chart at some point. So I do definitely like this song a lot. Not surprised you like it haha. I like RiRi too. Where the hell did you get the impression that I don't?! :o

9. Stromae - House'llelujah (Klaas Extended Mix)

NOTE: this is not the original, as the original House'llelujah pretty much sucks and is as dull as watching paint dry. This remix has incredible production, that's why I fell in love with it a lot right after the first listen. Stromae didn't deserve to flop with Alors on Danse in the UK as well. :( All Europe did dig that track a lot and UK decided to act all snobby towards the poor french lad. That's the British xenophobic music market alright!

10. Das Racist - Michael Jackson

Almost sent it to one of the previous contests. The music is super catchy. And I love me some good rap. And they ARE f***ing great at rapping.

11. Valravn - Fuglar

It all started with 'Kelling' which I sent to Unknown Pleasures 2. The song finished FOURTH in my 2010 YE chart. As for 'Fuglar' ('Birds' in Faroese - yeah, the song is not in danish, but these languages are quite similar in a way) it finished 13th. Crazily good. Ethnic motives are the way forward!

12. team rockit - första hjälpen

A great song from a swedish band closely connected to jj aka the best swedish band around.

13. The Weeknd - Wicked Games

So I've included one The Weeknd song from Thursday and this one is from House of Balloons. The video is all kinds of amazing and it was the first time Abel was brought to my attention. This song continues to grow on me with each listen, so does the whole House of Balloons mixtape which was underestimated by me at first. EVERYBODY IS REQUIRED AT LEAST 13 LISTENS OF THIS.

14. Diva - Glow Worm

As indie as you can get tbh. The song is a mess, but a good mess.

15. Stoffer og Maskinen - Indeni

#93 in my 2010 YE chart  You'll probably remember this band because I already entered Vi To Er Smeltet Sammen to BJSC and finished Top 10 :D So I decided to remember the incredibleness of this band and include this song too.

16. Clint Mansell - Death Is the Road To Awe

Ahhh, this is from the soundtrack to the 2006 movie called The Fountain. As you said, it goes EPIC in the last section and that's exactly why I love the song. So f***ing dramatic, touching and beautiful.

17. The Knife, Mt. Sims - Seeds

#83 in my 2010 YE chart <3 This song and Variation of Birds are from the same album too :D One of the true highlights on the record. And the opera part is my favourite tbh.

Since when did Alors On Danse flop in the UK? It had barely any airplay (Radio 1 b-list and that's it - wow!) and next to no video play and stayed in the top 40 for two months! Of course it flopped compared to every other country (apart from Norway, who apparently just didn't like it ) but that's because it got massive exposure in every other country!

Blame the UK radio stations, TV channels and record companies, people would buy foreign language songs in the UK, if only there were ever played here :( Gasolina and Dragostea Din Tei were EVERYWHERE when they came out and were huge hits, stayed in the top ten for ages!

One day we'll have another UK #1 with foreign lyrics, perhaps in one hour from now :P Again, Loca People has been EVERYWHERE, so it's hardly a shock...
