Posted October 9, 201113 yr So this is all very dodgy isn't it? Allowing your best mate access to the MoD, setting up business trips, handing out business cards and the like. I can see this one building into an eventual resignation tbh....
October 9, 201113 yr Fox's best mate seems to be a highly dodgy character. Whether that proves fatal to his ministerial career remains to be seen. The fact that Cameron has called for an interim report on Monday and both the Mail and Telegraph (who would be expected to be supporters of a right-winger like Fox) lead on the story today (Sunday) make his position look decidedly precarious. However, Fox would probably be a very awkward backbencher so Cameron will probably be hoping to keep him. It's the old cliche about it being better to have him inside the tent pissing out rather than outside pissing in.
October 9, 201113 yr I haven't read up on this, I failed to grab a copy of the i today, but there is no way I could begin to be impartial on this guy. I'd quite like the MoD to organised a firing squad for him at RAF Leuchars. I want him to go and I want his replacement to reverse the baffling decision to cut two of Scotland's 3 RAF bases and for Leuchars to be cut given that it's Rapid Deployment comes in handy very very very frequently against the Russians even today. Living in NE Fife without the sound of Jet engines would just be odd and as much as I'd LOVE the Airshow to bugger off as the traffic is dire it brings in bucket loads of cash.
October 9, 201113 yr You seriously have to wonder about this guy and the absolutely dysfunctional decisions that he's made as Defence Secretary.... Not only the cuts to armed forces personnel or the method by which he's basically stabbed them in the back in a manner that would do Josef Stalin proud when he betrayed the Polish resistance fighters to the Nazis, but this coming on the back of the revelations that he allowed the wretched Murdochs to sit in on "top secret" defence meetings.... Is Fox just an idiot, or a dangerous lunatic playing fast and loose with national sercurity...? Either way, he has to go... This week we've had a "Home Secretary" telling bare-faced lies about an immigration case to appeal to the tabloid-reading masses, and now we have this.... As for Adam Werritty himself, well, can there be three more dodgy words in the English language than "Dubai venture Capitalist".... God forbid he turns into another Mandelson.... -_-
October 9, 201113 yr It's good to see that Labour have been fairly sensible on this. All too often, at the first whiff of scandal involving a minister, the opposition's immediate reaction is to call for a resignation. So far Labour haven't although they now seem to be getting close to it. Calls for resignations become meaningless when they happen too often. So far in opposition, Labour seem to accept that which should mean such calls are actually taken seriously.
October 9, 201113 yr Author I think we have to bare in mind that it's the weekend and I'm sure Labour know this story will tick over nicely for them until tomorrow when I suspect the heat really will be turned up and we'll probably see Fox out of the door by the end of the day. What on EARTH was he thinking whilst making these decisions? One is AGOG.
October 9, 201113 yr Oh I'm sure they will turn up the heat tomorrow. But the story broke several days ago and Labour have been biding their time and asking for more information. Fox is due to face Defence questions tomorrow which could be interesting. Certainly Fox's apology is not good enough.
October 10, 201113 yr Apparently Cameron has "full confidence" in Fox. Might as well abandon that enquiry into his conduct then.
October 10, 201113 yr Author Apparently Cameron has "full confidence" in Fox. Might as well abandon that enquiry into his conduct then. QUITE Why on earth you say this to the public PRIOR to any enquiry results is a bit BAFFLING, particularly in the harsh light of Fox's actions?
October 13, 201113 yr Apparently Cameron has "full confidence" in Fox. Might as well abandon that enquiry into his conduct then. "Full confidence"-That is always code for he will be gone come next week. More allegations and leaks about him today. He really has had it and jobs for the boys will be his downfall. Defence Secretary Liam Fox was today facing new allegations of cronyism as it emerged he created a job in his office for a second ally - against the advice of senior military figures. Dr Fox appointed Lieutenant Colonel Graham Livesey as a military assistant, despite opposition from Sir Peter Wall, the Head of the Army. Lt Col Livesey applied for the post after the General Election and was turned down - but the Defence Secretary gave him a job as a second military assistant after converting another role. The minister first began pushing to have his candidate appointed shortly after he took office following the General Election, The Times reported.
October 13, 201113 yr There seems to be a concerted move by some people to shift the focus onto allegations about Fox's private life. My suspicion is that it is a deliberate attempt to divert attention away from serious allegations which actually matter to allegations which can be dismissed as "tittle-tattle". The "friend" involved, Adam Werrity, is now claiming that he may have "accidentally" misled people into believing he was an official adviser to Fox. Perhaps some people were misled by the fact that he used business cards describing himself as exactly that. Werrity has visited Fox many times at the Ministry of Defence. In all my time working in offices, the total number of occasions people have had friends dropping in for a chat has yet to reach double figures. It is simply regarded as "not the done thing". Surely that rule should apply even more rigorously in a workplace like the MoD.
October 13, 201113 yr Frankly I couldn't care less about these allegations about his private life, if he is some closeted denialist, that's his business - I think some of the serious allegations that have been made public need to be investigated thoroughly but that until that point there shouldn't be any prejudging of this story, or for that matter calls for resignation. Personally I can't stand the man, mainly for the bizarre decisions regarding defense cuts.. he comes across as a bit ignorant too.
October 13, 201113 yr the whole thing screams "gay affair" to me. How long before the whole of the Coalition government is found to be having one of these?

October 14, 201113 yr Tory donor links to Adam Werritty increase pressure on Liam Fox Millionaire Michael Hintze, the Tory donor who indirectly funded Adam Werritty, the friend and self-styled adviser to defence secretary Liam Fox, has tens of millions of dollars invested in defence companies through his hedge fund http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/politics/c...n-Liam-Fox.html One of the companies in which tycoon Mr Hintze's hedge fund CQS invested benefited from an announcement made by Dr Fox in July this year in his role as defence secretary, according to the Financial Times. CQS had £21.5million invested in L-3, a high-tech US communications firm, at the time Mr Fox awarded it a contract to provide the Ministry of Defence with new “Rivet Joint” aircraft. CQS only has a small portion of its total assets invested in defence-related positions and there is no evidence or suggestion that CQS’s funds profited directly in any way from the association of Mr Hintze with Mr Werritty or Dr Fox. The MoD said on Thursday that the contractor was chosen by the US government and the decision to select the firm had been made under the previous government. Up until now L-3's contract was not publicly released. The Australian-born businessman Mr Hintze, who is said to be worth more than £500million, has given the Conservative Party and Tory MPs almost £1,437,830 over the past decade. One of his companies has lent the party a further £2.5million. His firm CQS is found to have paid for flights and accommodation for a 2007 trip by Dr Fox to Mauritania and then again later that year to a conference in Florence. In October 2008, he flew Dr Fox – then Shadow Defence Secretary – to Washington. He also supplied a private jet for Dr Fox and Mr Werritty to fly from the United States to London in May this year. Earlier this week, The Daily Telegraph disclosed that Mr Werritty also had the use of a desk at the London offices of Mr Hintze until last week. A former girlfriend of Mr Werritty's told The Telegraph: “As far as I was aware, he would get up and unless he had an external meeting he would go there as if it was his office, every day,” said the woman, who said she had a relationship with Mr Werritty between April and August this year. “He literally had an office there, tucked away in the administration area. He was off the floor, he wasn’t part of the hedge fund. He was just given a free office space.” It was also discovered Mr Hintze's charitable foundation has also donated over £51,000 to Dr Fox's now-defunct charity The Atlantic Bridge, which was run by Werritty. One Tory MP said that any evidence that Mr Hintze had interests in defence companies would put Dr Fox in a difficult position: “This is what makes it into a grey area. It makes it a difficult decision and that becomes a tough judgment call for the prime minister and the cabinet secretary,” the MP said. “Hintze is not motivated by [financial] defence interests,” he said, “but a shared ideological agenda [with Mr Fox]. But perception does matter.” Sir Gus O’Donnell, cabinet secretary, is leading an inquiry into Mr Werritty’s relationship with Mr Fox including possible conflicts of interests. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ If Noxy Foxy and CallMeDave think this shit is going to go away, they better think again.....
