Well well I hate to say I told you so but thank-goodness he has gone. I am sure unwillingly but the tabloids are sure to have some good stories this weekend.

Liam Fox today quit his post as Defence Secretary over his links to friend and self-styled adviser Adam Werritty.Dr Fox quit the Cabinet after a week of damaging revelations about their relationship.

Despite pledging to remain in his post, Dr Fox today sent a letter to Prime Minister David Cameron announcing his resignation. In his letter to Mr Cameron Dr Fox said he had 'mistakenly allowed the distinction between my personal interest and my Government activities to become blurred'.Transport Secretary Philip Hammond is expected to be his replacement.

A statement is expected imminently. This afternoon Mr Werritty was being questioned by Cabinet Secretary Sir Gus O'Donnell over the nature of his relationship with Dr Fox.

And here's Noxy Foxy's resignation letter...

Dear David,

As you know, I have always placed a great deal of importance on accountability and responsibility. As I said in the House of Commons on Monday, I mistakenly allowed the distinction between my personal interest and my Government activities to become blurred. The consequences of this have become clearer in recent days. I am very sorry for this.

I have also repeatedly said that the national interest must always come before personal interest. I now have to hold myself to my own standard. I have therefore decided, with great sadness, to resign from my post as Secretary of State for Defence - a position which I have been immensely proud and honoured to have held.

I am particularly proud to have overseen the long overdue reforms to the Ministry of Defence and to our Armed Forces, which will shape them to meet the challenges of the future and keep this country safe.

I am proud also to have played a part in helping to liberate the people of Libya, and I regret that I will not see through to its conclusion Britain's role in Afghanistan, where so much progress has been made.

Above all, I am honoured and humbled to have worked with the superb men and women in our Armed Forces. Their bravery, dedication and professionalism are second to none.

I appreciate all the support you have given me - and will continue to support the vital work of this Government, above all in controlling the enormous budget deficit we inherited, which is a threat not just to this country's economic prosperity but also to its national security.

I look forward to continuing to represent my constituents in North Somerset.

Yours ever,

Liam

OH, PUH-LEEEEEEZE, spare us this shit..... "enormous budget deficit" blah, blah (like it came as a surprise to you the minute you took office), "I am honoured and humbled to have worked with the superb men and women in our Armed Forces", blah, blah.... Really, so "honoured" that you sacked thousands of them via f***ing EMAIL.... -_- Yeah, that's sure showing your respect.....

I can't see the point in celebrating his resignation, his replacement will probably be a bit of a twit too. It's like telling a waiter that there's a fly in your soup, then cheering as he brings back the same dish with a grasshopper in it.

True but the whole point of more resignations and scandal in the Con-dems is one more nail in the coffin and hopefully one day nearer to this unholy coalition collapsing.

Not a problem if you've ordered grasshopper soup. Yum

I know it won't happen but I'd quite like the new guy to reverse the decision to close RAF Leuchars, especially as they've pissed millions away preparing the base for the new aircraft only to give them to an entirely unprepared base to spend all that money AGAIN.

BAFFLING.

Moronic just doesn't cover this bunch of twats.

We all assumed it was inevitable but I still breathed a sigh of relief when I heard he'd gone. It does scare me though that of the 300-odd Tory MPs, he was considered to be one of the most befitting of a Cabinet job so his replacement will be someone who was originally considered to be less talented than him, Theresa May and Boy George.
So the report has found that Fox did break the ministerial code. Well I think we'd worked that one out for ourselves. Of course Fox is trying to spin it his way by saying he was cleared of the most serious allegations. I assume he means that he has been cleared of making any money out of this. However, nobody has ever claimed that he did. I don't know about other papers but the Guardian has stressed on several occasions that they have no evidence that Fox gained financially from any of these dodgy goings-on.

Fox's resignation speech was extraordinary. He continued to use passive phrases such as "The ministerial code has been found to be breached". It sounds so much less serious than "I broke the ministerial code" doesn't it?

He accused the press of vindictiveness. Perhaps someone on a murder charge should accuse the police of vindictiveness for daring to investigate whether they might be guilty of murder. He said that people may have got the impression of wrong doing. I wonder how that happened.

He has provided one of the worst examples of blaming everyone but himself I can remember. He must be the first minister to fall on his sword and blame the sword.

It really was whingeing, pathetic, "Oh, poor me, pity me please" speech wasn't it... At no point did he actually take any responsibility... Perish the thought that a Politician actually take responsibility for their wrongdoings and breaches of ethical codes.... <_<

And blaming the press for basically just doing their job...?? Hilarious... Because clearly the press should just be there to uncritically parrot whatever bullshit that MPs come out with..... -_-

Ian Hislop was brilliant on Have I Got News For You on this subject last night (as he was last week). He totally demolished Louise Mensch's pathetic attempts to defend Fox.

He certainly did, and frankly she came off as a typical arrogant Tory idiot just not willing to admit that anyone did anything wrong....

The Tories' abuse of the English language knows no bounds. Letwin has apologised for "allowing correspondence to end up in a park bin". So it's all the fault of the correspondence. Fox complains that the ministerial code has been broken - naughty code - and now Letwin is blaming his correspondence for ending up in the bin.

Fox was clearly guilty of lack of common sense and rightly had to resign.

The man is clearly intelligent as he underwent 7 years of medical training so he has no excuses really, it is not like he is a chav off the street.

Letwin should go too, total stupidity.

I know, that's just classic isn't it...?  But good on Ian Hislop for giving that excuse very short-shrift on Friday and making silly Tory Girl shift uncomfortably....
