Posted October 10, 201113 yr This thread is following up some of the chats I've had on other threads re. non-number 1's being created within the rules of the chart, thus making it sometimes not very reflective of what's really happening. Some have suggested a 4-week rolling chart may be better (will post as a comparison later), whilst personally I think a system that spreads the sales of any individual week over the next 3 in, say a 50:30:20 ratio would make the top end of the chart more genuinely reflect real number ones rather than some of the joke no.1's we've had recently (no names, but you know who I mean!!) What do other people think? Any suggestions for a better method? Using my suggestion, the last few charts would be like this: This week: 1 (2) Maroon 5 (77,340.1) 2 (3) Dappy (55,479.8) 3 (1) One Direction (52,965.3) 4 (7) Sak Noel (50,729.3) 5 (-) Rihanna (43,786.5) Last week: 1 (1) One Direction (75,135.1) 2 (2) Maroon 5 (73,219.4) 3 (4) dappy (55911.7) 4 (3) Pixie Lott (39346.4) 5 (10) Jason Derulo (38,435.4) w/c 25/09: 1 (2) One Direction (80,190.5) 2 (1) Maroon 5 (75106.9) 3 (3) Pixie Lott (53298.2) 4 (-) Dappy (48319.5) 5 (6) Saturdays (36,041.1) w/c 18/09: 1 (1) Maroon 5 (77,238.3) 2 (-) One Direction (76,982.5) 3 (5) Pixie Lott (52,533.9) 4 (4) Example (45,836.6) 5 (2) Olly Murs (41,888.3) w/c 11/09 1 (1) Maroon 5 (74,771.7) 2 (2) Olly Murs (60,120.9) 3 (4) Calvin Harris (50,125.4) 4 (7) Example (45,836.6) 5 (-) Pixie Lott (44,446.5) w/c 4/09 1 (3) Maroon 5 (64,755.6) 2 (1) Olly Murs (63,229.8) 3 (2) Wretch 32 (52,249.3) 4 (4) Calvin Harris (51,447.5) 5 (5) Christina Perri (43,569) w/c 28/08 1 (-) Olly Murs (54,575.5) 2 (1) Wretch 32 (51,199) 3 (10) Maroon 5 (45,184.5) 4 (-) Calvin harris (43,922.5) 5 (4) Christina Perri (40,498.1) w/c 21/08 1 (-) Wretch 32 (38,247.5) 2 (1) JLS (35,305.4) 3 (3) Cher Lloyd (34,289.4) 4 (9) Christina Perri (32,427) 5 (8) Nero (32,051) w/c 14/08 1 (1) JLS (54,015.8) 2 (2) Wanted (41,183) 3 (6) Cher Lloyd (37,039.3) 4 (4) Ed Sheeran (35,721.2) 5 (3) DJ Fresh (32,224.6) w/c 7/08 1 (3) JLS (56,063.3) 2 (1) Wanted (54,894.8) 3 (2) DJ Fresh (42,762.2) 4 (4) Ed Sheeran (42,044.2) 5 (5) Beyonce (33,548.1) w/c 31/7 1 (2) Wanted (75,352) 2 (1) DJ Fresh (56,294.9) 3 (-) JLS (49,008) 4 (3) Ed Sheeran (46,096.4) 5 (4) Beyonce (39,092) w/c 24/7 1 (1) DJ Fresh (80,444.6) 2 (2) Wanted (72,034.5) 3 (4) Ed Sheeran (48,955.5) 4 (3) Beyonce (43,601.6) 5 (9) Loick Essiene (39,920.7) w/c 17/7 1 (1) DJ Fresh (81,712.8) 2 (-) Wanted (58,582.5) 3 (7) Beyonce (46,689.7) 4 (4) Ed Sheeran (46,431.8) 5 (2) Jason Derulo (45,108.9) w/c 10/7 1 (-) DJ Fresh (70,285.5) 2 (2) Jason Derulo (56,821.7) 3 (1) Example (51,625.1) 4 (5) Ed Sheeran (46,076.6) 5 (3) Calvin Harris (43,955.4) w/c 3/7 1 (1) Example (59,898.3) 2 (7) Jason Derulo (53,134.1) 3 (3) Calvin Harris (51,613.8) 4 (2) Pitbull (49,399.4) 5 (5) Ed Sheeran (47,205.7)
October 10, 201113 yr Interesting idea. I can't ever see it being taken up by the industry, but it's a nice thought, and I'm glad to see Maroonina at #1
October 10, 201113 yr I can't agree with this, as it would result in songs with massive 1st week sales (like XF winners) being #1 longer than they would on a week by week basis. Edited October 10, 201113 yr by vidcapper
October 10, 201113 yr I can't agree with this, as it would result in songs with massive 1st week sales (like XF winners) being #1 longer than they would on a week by week basis. But they wouldn't instantly debut at #1, leaving more opportunities for other songs.
October 10, 201113 yr But they wouldn't instantly debut at #1, leaving more opportunities for other songs. ISTM they still would - their usual 500k, even divided over 4 weeks, would still swamp other singles.
October 10, 201113 yr The chart is fine as it is. Nothing needs to be changed with the possible exception of allowing video sales in and getting rid of the ridiculous rule that is currently stopping 'Paradise' from charting. Also whatever rule it was that stopped One Direction's Na Na Na and JLS' Umbrella from charting.

October 10, 201113 yr Author ISTM they still would - their usual 500k, even divided over 4 weeks, would still swamp other singles. ...I agree with the 4 week moving average method, however with the 50:30:20 this should not happen, as the ONLY way to prolong would be with significant week 2/ 3 follow up sales (christmas week could be the exception here though)
October 10, 201113 yr I think the chart is alright as it is. I just wish the deadwood falls a lot quicker
October 10, 201113 yr any of these 'change the chart rules' sorts of threads get the same response from me I'm afraid: No Edited October 10, 201113 yr by C.W
October 10, 201113 yr Currently our chart has some annoying habits, but I think it's fairer to encourage record companies to release OA/OS rather than penalise songs for no particular reason other than the fact you think there's a fast turnaround. The singles chart is the 'purest' it's ever been (well, if you take "singles" to mean "songs" which is a more relevant term), in the idea that it charts which songs sell the most over a weekly period with a minimum of technicalities such as the one in place in 2006 when a song had to either be physically available or have a physical arriving in the next week. There are a couple more hitches before it can be a truly 'pure' chart (such as the one someone mentioned which is stopping "Paradise" from charting) but it's on its way.
October 11, 201113 yr It'd be interesting the official chart went back to being on Tuesday like it used to be, and announce it on a TOTP type show at 8pm after Eastenders. It would be difficult for any X Factor effect to happen then. Also new releases would only have 3 days. But of course everybody would just release on Wednesday instead. Oh well, who cares. The charts are beyond help now. Edited October 11, 201113 yr by adlington36
October 12, 201113 yr The chart is fine as it is. Nothing needs to be changed with the possible exception of allowing video sales in and getting rid of the ridiculous rule that is currently stopping 'Paradise' from charting. Also whatever rule it was that stopped One Direction's Na Na Na and JLS' Umbrella from charting. JLS Umbrella did chart, it got to #107! Not sure about the One Direction situation.
October 12, 201113 yr Sales should always be the only yardstick. If you want a change then do more to spread the word about smaller acts that don't have the marketing budget of major labels.
October 12, 201113 yr I like the idea of the 50:30:20 as an 'extra', but as for changing the chart to tht, or the rolling average, I don't agree. For example, One Direction #1 last week on 50/30/20 and this week on 4-week average - yet it's not the most popular in terms of weekly sales anymore, probably not in video sales either, nor in terms of points, don't ever want to include airplay in the charts but I doubt it's near the top of the airplay chart either. So IMO it's not number 1 this week or last week And TBH I don't think we need any more longevity in the charts when the number of 20-week-plus chart runs over the last 3-4 years is the highest it's ever been.
October 12, 201113 yr JLS Umbrella did chart, it got to #107! Not sure about the One Direction situation. I know, it's just easier to say it didn't chart
October 12, 201113 yr personally I think a system that spreads the sales of any individual week over the next 3 in, say a 50:30:20 ratio would make the top end of the chart more genuinely reflect real number ones rather than some of the joke no.1's we've had recently (no names, but you know who I mean!!) This sums it up! Just because you disagree with some of the recent number 1s the chart compilation needs to be changed??? The chart has always listed the best selling singles / songs of the week it should continue to be that way! If you start messing around with split weeks etc; it loses its whole purpose. And no matter what way you change it you're still goin to end up with number 1s that you don't like......
