So, since Maroon 5 are above Gym Class Heroes on itunes now, shouldn't they be #2 for yet another week?

Easily. I think we can probably be pretty confident they will get a 7th week, and therefore will tie the record for 'most consecutive weeks at No2' with All-4-One ("I Swear" in July/August 1994). Obviously an amazing chart feat and quite incredible when you consider the turnover in the Top 5 over the past 2 months (6 different records at No1 for instance!)

I can't see them getting an 8th and getting the record outright though; The Wanted are likely to be #1 and Rihanna will definitely be at least ahead of MLJ.

That's the record for most consecutive weeks at #2 without reaching #1 - I may be wrong but I think there was a song that had more than that in the early days of the charts but got to #1 before/after?

Yep. "You Belong To Me" by Jo Stafford - but it was No2 on the first ever chart (14/11/52) and therefore could conceivably have been #1 the week before but we will never know - her chart run was 8 non consecutive weeks at No2 before climbing to No1 on her tenth week.

I think there was another one which had more than 7 consecutively though. I'm probably just making that up.

I'm not entirely sure The Wanted will get #1. People forget that their discography is 01-02-19-03-01 - with the #19 'Lose My Mind' being an X-Factor performed single and the #03 single being the Comic Relief single; both equating to high exposure.

I reckon it'll debut within the T5 - but I reckon Rihanna has got #1 in the bag for a third week.

A more interesting topic of discussion is where people think Katy Perry's 'The One That Got Away' will debut after tomorrow?

this may be a very silly comment to make,

but The Wanted did so well with Glad You Came because it was very likeable, catchy and fitted into its release in the summer very nicely, good airplay, good video etc.

i don't really like this new track, so a part of me wouldn't be surprised it it only managed to get to say #3, although I could of course be proven very wrong..

I really can't see The Wanted missing #1, I hope I'm wrong as 'Lightning' is incredibly uninteresting, but I can't see it going any other way unfortunately.

This 1954 No.1 Hit had 8 consecutive Weeks at No.2:,

Such A Night - Johnnie Ray

That's the one I was thinking of. Thanks.

So yes, the record M5 are equalling is most consecutive weeks at #2 without getting to #1.

I find The Wanted a male version of The Saturdays. And because their fan-base mainly consists of teenage girls (ala One Direction) they have a very strong fan base which should equal a high debut. The Saturdays don't have that sort of fan-base, as crazy as they (we) are. The Saturdays don't have that advantage.

The Wanted stand a good chance of #1 next week. Personally I'm not overly keen on the song or it's video (although some bits are alright) but considering this is their follow up to the massive 'Glad You Came' and their performing it on xfactor it has a good chance of #1.

I'm looking forward to a Steps Number One album on Sunday, and lots of historical sales statistics in the MW report on Monday.

This had better happen, we need some updated sales info!

Don't hold your breath.

I highly doubt that Steps will have trickle sold much at all to add to their old totals. I've never noticed any of their songs in the top 1000 before a few weeks ago...

Like I said in another thread, the songs have all laid dormant for ten years so to see 16 of the 19 eligible to cherry pick songs from the Ultimate Collection in or aroud the top 500 is somewhat baffling, considering there was no demand there whatsoever between the launch of iTunes and a few weeks ago...

This mass love for them has sprung back up out of nowhere, maybe Lisa's right and people are just looking for something fun and nostalgic to take their mind off things. Clearly Steps are now re-filling the void that they filled so well a decade ago, purely because there haven't been any bands like them since!

Is it possible as well that Steps have been under-rated a little. At the time, they were seen as naff, and yes they still are. But for those who aren't avid fans, to hear tracks like Last Thing On My Mind, One For Sorrow, Deeper Shade of Blue and It's the Way You Make Me Feel - they are actually very well crafted pop songs. As well as having the cheesefests 5,6,78 and Tragedy.

I can't help but draw comparasions to Abba in this way - of course ABBA are a different beast entirely - they did write their own songs and were clever musicians as well as singers. But who would have predicted in the 70's we would still be listening to ABBA today and would be adopted as national treasures. Again I'm not saying Steps are gonna be timeless (though that would be rather lovely) but when they split 10 years ago - did anyone really think their music could be so reawakened to a new generation?
