Soulja Boy Tell'Em - Crank That (Soulja Boy)

If The X Factor wasn't around this would have been a UK number 1.

Now this really is scraping the barrel for an "unlucky" #2.

Just Give Me a Reason is most DEFINITELY an example. PJ & Duncan came right out of nowhere  and then dropped back down just as quickly.

If that big Grease tune hadn't been around then The Smurfs would have had a No.1 in summer 1978.
New lows have officially been reached

P!nk - Get This Party Started

My Sweet Lord by George Harrison beat this to #1 and I'm pretty sure it's because he died only weeks before.

On a similarly morbid note:

Puretone - Addicted To Bass

Alliyiah kept this off number 1 a few months after she died with More Than A Woman

Damn, that's an awesome top 2!

Yes - because if there's one thing less lucky than dying that's getting stuck behind a dead person while they're at number 1.

It was actually more to do with copies of "Addicted to Bass" being put on sale a week early be accident (on the Saturday to be exact) when it sold 809 copies charting at No 68. When it was given its proper release on the Monday it missed out on the No 1 spot by 595 copies come Sunday! :(

D12 - My Band

This was stuck at #2 for two weeks behind the Tourette's anthem that is F**k It (I Don't Want You Back) by Eamon.

Ace of Base - The Sign

A quirky, memorable pop hit which is a true 90s classic. I think it was #2 for 3-4 weeks. I doubt the band cared though as it was a massive #1 in america and one of the biggest ever hits over there.

Westlife- What makes a man. Sold loads first week and got beat by a bloody cartoon builder!

I will admit, I was overjoyed when they got beaten to #1 finally.

Whoa just stumbled across this:

Clean Bandit & Jess Glynne - Real Love will definitely be added to this list on Sunday.

-----

Ronan Keating feat Yusef - Father & Son

Kylie Minouge - I Believe In You

Ice Cube - You Can Do It Put Your Back Into It

^

All beating by Band Aid 20 in 2004!

In a way it's probably just as well all three were beaten by Band Aid 20 as each single recorded very poor sales while at number 2. Had it not been for BA20, the Christmas number 1 in 2004 would have been 'Father And Son' by Ronan Keating and Yusuf on 27,992 sales, which would probably have been the lowest ever weekly sale for a Christmas number 1. Band Aid 20 sold 231,492 copies that week.

The weekly sales for the number 2 behind Band Aid 20:

11/12/04: Ice Cube: 20,953 (BA20: 292,594)

18/12/04: Kylie Minogue: 39,321 (BA20: 287,849)

25/12/04: Ronan / Yusuf: 27,992 (BA20: 231,492)

01/01/05: Steve Brookstein: 127,370 (BA20: 231,929)

I've not read the whole thread to see if another has mentioned this but I believe Happy would have been number one more a couple more weeks (:drama:) as it was selling, at least at one point over 100k while at #2.

The chart isn't always fair because it really depends on when releases are released and what competition (or lack of) there is in that week. Sales really are all that counts. Ready For Your Love did pretty good selling (71k) and only reached #4. It may have reached 3 or even 2 (or 1 possibly , beating the likes of SecondCity or Oliver Heldens) under different circumstances...

Surely Kylie's #2 sale isn't poor by 2004 standards?

In that case, the same also applies to the Supermen Lovers' 'Starlight'.

Surely Kylie's #2 sale isn't poor by 2004 standards?
By 2004 standards in general it was pretty good but in the context of a single in the immediate run up to Christmas it would have been seen as a low sale for a number 1. As it turns out, sales of the number 1 in the same week in 2005 and 2006 were worse.

I'm looking at you, "Shake It Off".

Well it was only #2 for 1 week (on sales and official on two separate occasions) and didn't sell what a number one would typically sell (55k). It did do very well in the top 5 nonetheless :D
