October 30, 201114 yr The One Direction song was what I was expecting their first single to sound like. TYPICAL Boyband crap! At least their first single was good! Rihanna  Cheers >>>> We Found Love
October 30, 201114 yr My Retro Top Ten this week is from 1982 1 (1) - Culture Club - Do You Really Want To Hurt Me Boy George and his colleagues had released a few singles prior to “Do You Really Want To Hurt Me”, but increasing coverage of the singer in the popular media (much of it based around his sexuality and outfits rather than the music) saw this track rise all the way to the top of the charts where it clocked up three weeks at Number One. With some reggae influences in evidence and emphasising the importance of style from the New Romantic movement, Culture Club went on make the best seller of 1983 (“Karma Chameleon”) and a string of other hits. After the band broke, Boy George had a solo number one, a handful of hits as “Jesus Loves You” and an increasingly troubled personal life. A short-lived reunion followed but the huge success had gone (although it did yield one top ten single) and the band broke up again in 2002, although a “30th Anniversary” tour and album have been rumoured. 2 (11) - Eddy Grant - I Don’t Wanna Dance Previously recording a number one single as a member of The Equals (“Baby Come Back” in 1968), the Guyanese Grant had been having solo hits for a couple of years but none of them had taken off like this. The record entered at a fairly normal number 63 in mid-October, and four weeks later gave him his only solo number one. It was a light reggae sound with his voice overlaid on itself several times to produce a rather bland vocal. The follow-up, “Electric Avenue”, reached Number 2 in both the UK & the US. 3 (6) - Tears For Fears - Mad World Although they had had a couple of singles released before “Mad World”, this was the song that introduced most of us to Roland Orzabal & Curt Smith, a simple haunting pop song which this week was reaching what was to be it’s peak position which it held for three weeks. The song also made John Peel’s Festive Fifty at the end of the year based on votes compiled from listeners to his radio show, highly unusual for such a commercially successful song. An even more stripped-down cover version by Michael Andrews featuring Gary Jules featured in the film “Donnie Darko” was the Christmas Number 1 in 2003. 4 (3) - Kids From Fame - Starmaker The movie and the subsequent TV show “Fame” had been the popular cultural phenomenon of 1982. Irene Cara’s film theme tune made number one in July although she did not appear in the TV series. Based around the New York School of the Performing Arts, this song (their second hit) was a tribute to one of the older teachers who according to the story had been responsible for creating generations of stars. With each cast member singing one line at a time before becoming almost choral towards the end, the record lacked any continuity but still managed to collect 5 weeks in the top ten, with a peak of number three. The most recent comparison would be the three singles released by various generations of X-Factor finalists. Fame was a short-lived success and after only two more minor, hits, the whole thing disappeared from view until the movie was remade in 2009 with the theme, now sung by Naturi Naughton, making the Top 40 again. 5 (29) - Dionne Warwick - Heartbraker Dionne first entered the British chart in 1964, with “Anyone Who Had A Heart”, just a week after Cilla Black’s version, which went all the way to number one. Her next single was the seminal version of “Walk On By”, but her British hitmaking record was patchy to say the least. In 1982, she linked up with Barry Gibb of the Bee Gees for the “Heartbreaker” album which brought her success on both sides of the Atlantic, the title song becoming her highest single placing ever when she reached Number 2. She had changed her surname to Warwicke in 1971 on the advice of an astrologer, but reverted to the original version in 1975. 6 (2) - Kid Creole & the Coconuts - Annie I’m Not Your Daddy Originally signed to the seminal American “Ze” label, August Darnell and co had three top ten hits in 1982 all with a rather summery, Latin American feeling behind them. “Kid Creole” was not, as was thought at the time, an alternative name for Darnell but a composite character to represent the central character in a musical carnival. The second male member of the band, Coati Mundi, was given a credit on their first minor hit “Me No Pop I”. while the Coconuts, three female backing singers including Darnell’s then wife, had one number 60 hit on their own the next year. Their last appearance in the singles chart was a remix of “I’m A Wonderful Thing Baby” which spent a fortnight on the listings in 1993. 7 (4) - Beatles - Love Me Do 1982 was the 20th anniversary of “Love Me Do”’s original release, and to celebrate the occasion EMI released all the Fab Four’s singles exactly 20 years after their original issue, including on very collectable picture disks. It certainly worked with “Love Me Do” which reached Number 4 giving the Beatles their second top ten hit of the year (“Beatles Movie Medley” having achieved that in early July). The law of diminishing returns saw virtually of the other re-releases peak lower than their predecessors. Still, the programme added nearly 50 weeks to the Beatles’ weeks-on-chart total. “Love Me Do” was re-released again to mark the 30th anniversary in 1992, but that time all it could manage was a solitary week at number 53. Paul McCartney wrote most of the song while he was just 16 and to be honest, it shows. He, and the group, of course went on to much bigger and better things! 8 (10) - Barry Manilow - I Wanna Do It With You Despite being a constant figure of fun for many, at his peak Manilow had one of the most dedicated fanbases for his piano-based MOR songs and ballads. “I Wanna Do It With You” was an attempt at a more uptempo number in an attempt to expand his appeal, and incredibly remains his only top ten UK single despite the singer having many more well known songs on his resume. He has continued to be a major live attraction, and since 2005 has had residencies at two major Las Vegas hotels showrooms. 9 (7) - Spandau Ballet - Lifeline After their original emergence as part of the New Romantic movement, Spandau Ballet had become fairly regular entrants to the charts by late 1982. “Lifeline” became their fifth top single, peaking at Number 7. They were to achieve their biggest success six months later when the ballad “True” sailed all the way to Number One. Like most 1980s bands seem to have, they split in acrimony towards the end of the decade with the Kemp brothers both taking up acting, but again like most of their contemporaries the inevitable reunion took place in 2009 with the band selling out three nights at the O2 arena in London. 10 (19) - Shakin’ Stevens - I’ll Be Satisfied The Welsh rock’n’roll revivalist was one of the most consistent hitmakers of the first half of the 1980s, amassing 16 top tens including four number ones - covers of “This Ole House” and “Green Door”, plus “Oh Julie” and “Merry Christmas Everyone” which has crept back into the lower regions of the chart in each of the last few Christmases. “I’ll Be Satisfied” had to make do with a single week at number 10, although that was slightly better than it’s predecessor “Give Me Your Heart Tonight” which had to settle for being stuck at number 11 for three consecutive weeks. The main trouble with Shaky his is that they did tend to merge into each other, with large parts of his catalogue sounding very simple - he’d hit on a successful formula and quite naturally exploited that. He returned to the public eye in 2007 on the reality TV Series “Hit Me Baby One More Time” alongside other former big names, eventually winning the competition. Other New Entries to top 75 33 - Michael Jackson & Paul McCartney - The Girl Is Mine 46 - Clannad - Theme From Harry’s Game 52 - Donna Summer - State Of Independence 62 - A Flock Of Seagulls - Wishing (If I Had A Photograph Of You) 65 - Whitesnake - Here I Go Again/Bloody Luxury 66 - Shakatak - Stranger 67 - Gary’s Gang - Knock Me Out 69 - Thomas Dolby - She Blinded Me With Science 71 - Thompson Twins - Lies 73 - Phil Everly - Louise 75 - America - You Can Do Magic
October 30, 201114 yr Author It's released on the same week as Teardrop so fingers crossed the charity peeps get it. I'm not sure I like that either - though I would prefer Teardrop for #1 even if it is just a rehash of Everybody's Free To Wear Suncreeen with the lyrics from Teardop.
October 30, 201114 yr C(DTT) just feels so old already. I guess that's what you get for releasing a single from a new album just a few weeks after the last one from the previous album...
October 30, 201114 yr Rihanna  Cheers >>>> We Found Love Agree with this! I'm impressed Cheers managed to hang on though. Rihanna will have 4 songs in the top 40 this week! :o When was the last time she managed that? I think Only Girl, Love the Way You Lie, Who's That Chick? and What's My Name? were all in the top 40 together.
October 30, 201114 yr Hopefully last week of this crap Cheers in the top 40. Edited October 30, 201114 yr by Jason
October 30, 201114 yr I'm not sure I like that either - though I would prefer Teardrop for #1 even if it is just a rehash of Everybody's Free To Wear Suncreeen with the lyrics from Teardop. I hadn't actually considered the similarity to Everybody's Free (To Wear Sunscreen) :o Good call.
October 30, 201114 yr Geez, you guys are giving me an age complex....Lionel Richie's "Hello" was number 1 on my 15th birthday!!!!
October 30, 201114 yr Agree with this! I'm impressed Cheers managed to hang on though. Rihanna will have 4 songs in the top 40 this week! :o When was the last time she managed that? I think Only Girl, Love the Way You Lie, Who's That Chick? and What's My Name? were all in the top 40 together. I just haven't clicked with "We Found Love" as much I did with "Only Girl (In the World)". And Rihanna really does well around this time of the year. Her red hair brightens up our dark days
October 30, 201114 yr Cheers is really overplayed and sounds dated already. She shouldn't have released it, Fading or Complicated are much better, or she could have not released anything and waited for We Found Love.
October 30, 201114 yr Teardrop reminded me more of Choose Life by PF Project feat Ewan McGregor than it does Sunscreen :o

October 30, 201114 yr Woo! Beyonce makes the top 40  I'm so confused with her release schedule though. She's released videos for Countdown, Party and Love On Top. Which song is suppose to actually be charting?
October 30, 201114 yr Author Teardrop reminded me more of Choose Life by PF Project feat Ewan McGregor than it does Sunscreen :o Yeah, I guess it could be compared to that too.
