Radio 1 plays indie music?????????

My exact thoughts. Soft poppy indie at best.

There are 9 songs on the current playlist that could even be described as indie or rock in the loosest of definitions, Coldplay, The Kooks, Ben Howard. There's the rock trio of Enter Shikari, You Me At Six and Red Hot Chili Peppers, then the Wombats, Kasabian and Wu Lyf. That's it. Indie dominance?

I'd only consider Wu Lyf to be indie, although I've got no idea who Ben Howard actually is.

Wow I'm 28 and have started to feel too old for radio1 lately, I've even stopped listening to the chart show every week for the first time in 20 years not that the chart show is particuarly representive of radio1s output nowadays.

Could it be that all the genre specific shows are attracting the older audiences now as it's perhaps older people who know what style of music they like whereas maybe those under 21 are liking all the same sounding rnb hip hop stuff.

Also if it's the breakfast show that has an older audience then you have to remember that no self respecting 18-30 year old is up before lunchtime lol!

What i dislike about Radio 1 is there is far too much talking and not enough music being played and certain presenters that love hearing the sound of their own voice.Guilty of that is Chris Moyles,Fern Cotton and Reggie Yates.I stopped listening to the chart show with Reggie over a year ago as he's simply unprofessional and childish. There was a time when Reggie was chatting to Jason Derulo on the chart show and Jason actually called it the Reggie Yates show!!
I am a bit surprised the average age of Radio 1 listeners is so high. I mean, I just can't imagine people in their early 30's listening to Pixie Lott, Tinie Tempah and The Saturdays, if you know what I mean. But evidently they do listen to that.

Im 32 years old and know more about todays pop music than probably all of my friends who's ages range from 18 to about 25. I listen to Pixie, Cher Lloyd, Demi Lovata, One Direction, kylie, The Saturdays, Gaga...the list goes on. What does someones age have to do with what kind of music they like? Im gonna take a wild guess that you're a teenager?...

Somebody best call the authorities before this situation gets completely cray cray...

Do you think these DJs talk so much purely because they feel like it? Don't you think they'd rather do the Magic FM trick of playing "10 in a row!" and go home with their pay having barely uttered a word? The people that are fans of these shows tune in because they like listening to the chat. If I wanted to listen to non-stop music I could whack an album on or put on Magic!

Its like complaining about Radio 3 for playing too much classical music or TalkSport for talking too much about sport!

I agree completely, I'm 32 too and listen to all sort of music, including new, young artists' music too. Age has nothing to do with music taste, although it has to be said, with age your music taste is changing this and that way.

Yes, I'm a teenager.

To be honest, it's not that I don't believe someone your age can physically like those artists, just that pretty much everybody I know in real life that's over the age of about 25 hates all chart music with a passion (except Lady Gaga and Adele).

But clearly that's not the case, based on the age of the average Radio 1 listener. Just a bit of a surprise to me. Not that I don't believe a 32 year-old could like The Saturdays and Tinie Tempah, just that I was previously under the impression that they generally hated them.

At the risk of being accused of an Eric Blob over-simplification, I don't think the majority of 32-year olds (and older) are inclined to hate anything so much as the younger generation. Us "oldies" are more tolerant and would listen to a wider range of music.

In response to Brotho above, yes I'd like DJs to play more music, maybe not 10 in a row but 3 at a time without all the rubbish, and it should be absolutely compsulory for all records to be back announced.

I'm about to turn 20, and I don't really listen to Radio 1 anymore - But then I don't listen to any radio anymore. I'm much happier with my iPod where I can choose what music to listen to and not have an irritating DJ talking nonsense about something I don't care about.
I think it's far more simpler than people think - young people just don't choose to listen to the radio anymore. Obviously it is not true for all young people but between 12-16 I used to listen to Radio 1 all the time. It was my source of music. Now there's Facebook, Twitter, Spotify, YouTube etc. - I'd be surprised if a lot of young people actively listen to the radio. I might put it on now and again, but I want to be able to listen to the songs I want to listen to, and not what DJs are being told to play. Accessing music now is so much easier, even when you're in the car you can plug your iPod in the cigarette lighter.
Is it not just the case that younger people no longer listen to radio at all or as much, and that the people who grew up listening to radio are still listening and slowly getting older?

^I agree, I said this on the previous page. You don't even need to listen to radio to discover new music anymore, it is becoming less and less relevant IMO.

Plus when you choose your own music, you also avoid DJ's inane drivel! :)

To be fair, I go out clubbing about twice a week and hang out with younger people so I probably act alot younger than alot of people my age, obviously im gay and don't have any children so I like to enjoy myself, oh and im at uni. Personally I think, when it comes to gay men, they do tend to have younger music taste etc.

Radio1 has the big advantage of not having to play adverts, yet they waste this advantage by having their presenters drone on and on instead of playing music.

I can drive all the way to work and listen to only 1 song on Chris Moyles, as they are busy having dull quizzes, 'banter' and newsbeat. I appreciated that on Breakfast shows in particularly they expect the presenter to inject a bit of personality in to the show, but there surely has to be a better mix of music and chatter?

Overall though (as others have already pointed out) Radio1 will be suffering from the fact that young kids now have iPod's, Mobiles and iPad's to be able to listen to music on, so it is no surprise that the average listening age is creeping up...

Yes, I sometimes listen to Radio 1 on by bus journey to work, and often I don't hear a single song played. And I can just switch over to Capital, BRMB, Choice, or even Heart and one of them will be playing a song that I like. To be honest, I can just take my headphones out and some kid at the back of the bus will be blasting a song that I like.

It would be a bit unfair for me to accuse you of over-simplification, when I do the same all the time.

I honestly feel it's the other way around though. Pretty much all I've heard 32+ year olds say with regards to chart music is how it's all terrible now, too much RnB and how it was much better 15 years ago. While most kids my age think everything is absolutely amazing, etc. This is just based on my personal experiences though. It could be different in general, and the average age of Radio 1 listeners suggests it could be.
