Well, I didn't see Johnny Cash being dragged out to a 15 million-strong audience last night. Half the people watching probably don't even know it's a cover.

That would be awkward

Still, if Leona's vocal performance wasn't good enough, people wouldn't have tracked down her version on iTunes.

You only need a small percentage of the viewership doing that to get to the top of itunes. Remember, 14 million watch X Factor, you can get a number one single with 100,000 sales and Leona won't even get that.

The hype around her performance seems widely negative if people know the song she's singing. I guess Cash is a song ruiner, none can really compare.

Glee gets a tiny audience in the UK, XFactor as a massive audience you cant compare them.

I know she struggles selling original songs but does have to sing so many covers  It will be interesting to see how she does when she releases her own material and without the xfactor behind her...or will SC be putting her on BGT.

A 'tiny audience' that has got far less popular songs than Bohemian Rhapsody into the top 40.

Surprised 'Hurt' is doing that well - I wasn't actually that keen on the performance, mainly due to the fact that everything she said, I couldn't understand.

The girl seriously needs to work on her diction, but she hasn't half got some pipes on her.

Sales aren't THAT low. No one remember 2004?!

But you can't really compare the two though, sales are low now in comparison to now. I think whoever is number one today will be definitely in the 5 lowest no. 1s of the year.

Lets be real here, she just performed on the X factor final, the song isn't already out on an album ect, so all of its sales are hugely front loaded. The fact that she is 'only' #4 when sales are so low right now is not 'smashing'

That's not "being real", that's being completely one-sided.

Let's look at the other side, shall we:

One single performance boosted her up to #4 on iTunes. Rebecca Ferguson couldn't manage that IIRC with her debut single NRBL which had, at the very least, a music video and some form of radio play. Leona doesn't have a music video, or any airplay and is selling this song on just one great performance. I don't see Michael Buble's song in the top 10 or even top 40?

Nero got to number one on under 50,000. Only 10 weeks this year have had sales of a number 1 over 100,000. :(

Pop music was dead in 2004 and stayed that way until 2007. 2004 was the year I migrated to MTV2 and learned the greatness of Rock/Indie. :w00t:

Buble is not looking for a singles success, he wants sales for his Christmas album which are great (comparative to the yearly sales average).

That's a ridiculous argument.

The X Factor final had an audience of 14 million, compare that to most of the current top 10 who have a radio audience of up to 5 times that in any chart week. That also applies to new releases who can have in excess of an audience of 100 million by the time their song is released.

Buble is not looking for a singles success, he wants sales for his Christmas album which are great (comparative to the yearly sales average).

And the relevance of that is...?

At the end of the day, he performed on the same show as Leona and, regardless of whether he wants to sell more albums than singles, his song in particular hasn't been as popular as Leona's. You could argue that Leona wasn't "looking for single success" either. After all, she hasn't sent 'Hurt' to radio or released a music video of it.

That's a ridiculous argument.

That radio argument is rather daft, even of there are 70 miillion "listens" to a track a huge number of them will be the same people over and over again. Not so with the 14 million X-Factor final audience

Also, the XF final didn't get 14 million viewers (which was clearly a guess just to help prove someone's point). It averaged 10.5 million and reached a peak of just over 12 million.

The relevance is that Michael Buble was promoting his seasonal album which is currently the 7th best selling of the year. People who like his track are less likely to buy the single and more likely to buy the album, especially physical albums as gifts going into the last two shopping weeks.

Michael Buble isn't a singles artist so its wrong to compare the two.

But it doesn't have a parent album that she can flog, so anyone who's interested might spend 99p on the song. Bublé is asking people to shell out the best part of a tenner for an album, so there's bound to be a smaller boost for him.

Repeats, ITV Player, timeshift = Average 14 million.

You are using overnights. Also, Sunday shows average 14 million showing that people do indeed catch up in various ways.

His audience is also more mature and more likely to want physicals rather than downloads which skew younger. The itunes singles chart isn't everything is the main point.

Well, I didn't see Johnny Cash being dragged out to a 15 million-strong audience last night. Half the people watching probably don't even know it's a cover.

Half of it's target audience would not know who Johnny Cash was.
