Radio 1 has signed five dance music DJs and announced an all-new show – as some of the station’s older guard depart amid scheduling changes.

Skream & Benga, Toddla T, Charlie Sloth and Friction (not to be confused with Asian Network’s Bobby Friction) will all be hosting their own shows from April 2012.

However, the changes mean that Judge Jules, Gilles Peterson, Kissy Sell Out and Fabio & Grooverider will be leaving Radio 1 next year.

Thursday night (midnight – 2am) will see the addition of brand new show BBC Radio 1 Residency, presented by a roster of DJ’s including Heidi, Chuckie and Kutski on a weekly rotation.

Friday night will continue to be dance music-themed, with ‘the biggest duo in Dubstep’ Skream & Benga being given the 11pm – 1am show.

They will follow Annie Mac (7pm- 9pm) and Pete Tong (9pm- 11pm) on Fridays, who will remain in their current slots.

Toddla T, who has been on the In New DJ’s We Trust line up since 2009, will broadcast his very own permanent show on Friday mornings (2am - 4am).

Other specialist schedule changes include:

- Charlie Sloth, who currently presents a Hip-Hop show on 1Xtra fronting his own show on Radio 1 on Tuesdays (2am – 4am).

- Friction will be join the station to host his own Drum and Bass show on Mondays (2am – 4am).

- In New DJ’s We Trust, Radio 1's showcase for new DJ talent and new dance music will continue every Thursday evening (9pm-10pm). Meanwhile, the Beeb says that “early next year a brand new line up of four cutting edge DJ’s will be revealed”.

- The Essential Mix will move from Saturday (3.00am – 5.00am) to Saturday (1.00am – 3.00am)

- Annie Nightingale will move from Friday (2.00am – 4.00am) to Saturdays (3.00-5.00am)

- The Punk Show with Mike Davies will move from Tuesdays (2am-4am) to Wednesdays (midnight – 2am)

- Nihal will move from Wednesday (midnight – 2am) to Wednesday (2.00am – 4.00am)

Ben Cooper, Controller of Radio 1 said: ‘‘It’s important that Radio 1 continues to develop new talent and the station keeps evolving for our young listeners. These changes to our evening schedule will strengthen the range and depth of the specialist music offering on the network.’

’We’d like to thank Jules, Gilles and Fabio & Grooverider for over a decade of hard work and commitment to music at Radio 1, and also to Kissy Sell Out his contribution over the last three years. All are incredibly talented and we wish them the very best for the future.’’

Judge Jules said: ‘I’ve had an incredible time over the last 14 years at Radio 1. I’m going to continue DJ’ing and I’m having a bit of a career change - I’m off to become an Entertainment Lawyer at Sheridans’.

Gilles Peterson said: ‘ I’ve had an amazing 13 years at Radio 1 - to be able to get away with the radical music that I’ve pushed out has always surprised me and I thank Radio 1 for giving me the freedom to do that. I’m looking forward to continuing my work in the BBC family some time in the future’.

Peterson is talking to Radio 6 Music about future projects

I think the chart forum should suffice. Unfortunately it does not include Reggie Yates :( but MW subscribers can leave comments on the article if they wish to.

Not bothered about Jules, Gilles and F+G leaving. But OH NO at Kissy Sell Out :( Also not happy about the new timeslot for Nihal's slow with his old slot being replaced by Mike Davies.

I did think it was only a matter of time before Skream & Benga got a proper show though.

I thought Skream and Benga already had their own show on Radio 1. Or maybe I was just seeing the future.

They were part of the rota for In New DJs We Trust I think, same as Toddla T. They definitely didn't have a permanent show (i.e. with a specific time on a specific day every week) in any case.

ohh god :( im not looking forward to this whole new Radio 1 trying to be a youthful station, they're just going to play dubstep and weird dance music as well as crappy alternative all day now in my opinion
Not bothered. I listen to the radio 1 playlist on youtube every month to make sure I'm not missing anything but I don't listen unless an artist I like is being interviewed or doing a live lounge. I have better things to do with my time than to hear Fearne Cotton droning on about her boring life/being a sycophant over some band she thinks will make her look cool. Crap DJs, too much talk.

I won't comment on 'crap DJs' as that's just personal opinion but these changes concern nighttime DJs to whom 'too much talk' doesn't apply. That's strictly a characteristic of the daytime shows.

That's what Radio 1's been for the best part of a decade. Radio 2 is an infinitely better station now.

I think the general idea of a radio is you have it playing when you're doing other things that would be boring otherwize. I highly doubt anybody turns on a radio and just sits there for hours listening!

Isn't that called getting older though? Radio 1 is supposed to cater to a different audience than Radio 2.

Radio 1 is aimed at 15 to 29 year olds while Radio 2 is aimed at people in their 30s and beyond. There will be people outside the core audience who will prefer the other station but the age groups are set according to the aims of the BBC Charter. Radio 1 will, by necessity, have to aim at attracting a younger audience to stay within its remit.

Plus the changes are, in part, being forced on Radio 1 by the cuts in funding for the BBC. The overnight programming is going to (apparently) be shared between Radio 1 and IXtra as a cost cutting exercise. The daytime schedules are still going to be the same as now for both stations.

One thing leads to another and before you know it those night time DJs have crawled their way up the ladder onto earlier shows, people like Dev (?) etc. Besides, any talk is too much from these people. I used to listen to Chris Moyles when he was on at 3pm and Zane Lowe for the first year or two of his show, they were good for a while. But how can you defend a station that has Vernon kay and Sara Cox (hopefully she's been fired by now) as DJs? Sara Cox must be the most annoying DJ of all time. And then Jo Whiley and Jo Whiley lite; Fearne Cotton. It really is one travesty of an appointment after another... JK & Joel FFS. Is there something special about the night time slots where they suddenly make good appointments? The obsession with trying to be cool is what irks me most. I mean Les Dennis is basically on radio 1 when you think about it so they're not doing a very good job at that.

yeah obviously but I'd rather play my own music (or even another radio station).

Do alot of people actualy listen to the radio at this time?

Im sure a few do but a lot of those shows are very very niche.

I have to say that the tyes of music on those shows doesnt interest me at all but Kissy Sell Out's mixes are pretty exceptional.
