What is with this hate campaign agaisnt MW? Who cares if its not very good, people are buying it because they either do like it, or want to help a charitable cause. If 300k bought this, that More than half a million made. Its not even an anti x factor campaign, just a song released at Christmas. uurghhhhhh, it riles me when people get angry over charity. Literally, I knew this was a bitchy board, but you dont just go against something with the sole aim of helping people. The quicker the naive 14 year olds on this board learnt that a number one is nothing to menstruate about, the better.

Well said (although I doubt most of us have ever menstruated over anything before ).

The charts have been incredibly Buzzjack-friendly this year, far moreso than a few years ago, so people really shouldn't complain about this imo.

A lot of the songs are quite awful, but it'll all be back to normal in a few weeks. And I'm sure a lot of the general public do actually like the Military Wives, Little Mix, Nirvana, etc. songs tbh.

There are so many versions of Alex Day's song!

Dominic the Donkey for Christmas number 1, it is remotley to do with Christmas after all, and I know the Military Wives song is for a good cause but it is SO dull.

If you want to help charities, great, But just give money, why buy a song you wouldn't otherwise buy just because it's for charidee?

And I'm a lot older than 14......

But as Liam has said, you can just donate directly to the charity itself if you want to support it but don't like the song. It's not like this is the only way to support the charity. If there are people buying it because they genuinely like the song then that's all fine and dandy but I think quite a lot of its sales will be from people who don't even like the song. I doubt anyone's actually against people supporting a charity (I don't support this particular cause but I don't have anything against people who do).

I'm going to ignore that incredibly condescending last sentence.

You can just buy the song and give extra money to the charity. A lot of people do that.

Or don't buy the single at all and just give that 'extra money to the charity' plus 99p or whatever...

Why woud you go to a charity and donate to them 99p? Thats just incredibly patronising. We're in a recession. People want to help, but the dont have that extra £5 to throw away. By buying the track for 79p or whatever, they've helping a good cause, without being insulting. The people that bought the physical probably do enjoy the song, and as Eric said, you can always donate that additional money if you already have it.

What is the difference between donating 99p to a charity or buying a song for 99p with the proceeds going to the charity if you're not even going to listen to the song? Why would the charity find a direct 99p donation 'insulting' but be just fine with an identical donation through the proceeds of a single? If anything a direct donation is LESS insulting because you're supporting the cause without having to be persuaded by receiving something in return...

And any donation to a charity, even if it's only 1p, can only be a good thing. Donating 1p still means you're donating 1p more than probably the vast majority of people.

I don't see how going to a charity and donating 99p to them is 'incredibly patronising'. Charities seem to appreciate any money they get and even a small amount can make a difference, whether it be 99p or £99. If I see a charity bucket in a shop I might throw in some change, 50p or so, I don't get how that's insulting.

Great to see Radiohead in the top 100 now :D

That is without any sales from yesterday, too, so could still climb higher - top 40 even?

Just catching up with all things iTunes and I've got to say...LOL!!! :D

This is shaping up be one of the most unexpected/bizarre Xmas chart battles for some time. It's obvious that Military Wives are heading for #1. Having read that report about them outselling #2 100/1 does that mean Little Mix have suffered a ridiculous week-on-week decrease in sales? :o Or is 'Wherever You Are' looking set to become the fastest selling single of all time? :o Would be absolutely incredible if it sells 1 million copies this week alone. :o

Further down we've still got Alex Day with his thousand versions of his song charting.

...and what's this? Lou Monte?!!! Never heard it but will YouTube this out of pure curiosity.

As someone posted earlier in this thread, these songs will all have plummeted in a fortnights time. Regardless of what people think of the songs charting high, it's certainly going to make for interesting UK top 40 charts over the next 3 weeks. :D

Why isn't :D wearing a santa hat? :drama:

Donating *any* amount of money, no matter how small, to a charity is not insulting. Not unless you're waving notes in their face and laughing, then it would be.

Oh it isn't and it shouldn't be frowned upon. I was in Tesco's last week and these very bubbly girls were near the entrace dressed in bizzare Xmas outfits, singing christmas carols and asking for donatons (can't rememeber which charity it was for). As I was leaving the store, I put £1 into their bucket and they were genuinely really pleased that I'd made a contribution.

I should've put 1p in the bucket now thinking about it!!! :D

Some people suggested it might just be on Amazon it's out-selling them by that margin. If it was overall, it would be looking at sales like 5,000,000 this week, which I just think won't happen.

Interestingly Nirvana are number 2 on Amazon.

By that logic the top two this weekend should be Little Mix and Dominick the Donkey B-)

What is this Radiohead song? Is it another campaign or is it a new single? Odd that it's doing better than 'Lotus Flower' which actually had airplay before its release if it's the latter :o

I'm pretty sure the 100/1 thing is either plain wrong or just Amazon because otherwise that'd put its sales on several million already - I accept now it'll be a massive seller but that's just not believable in the slightest.

I hope some more campaigns pop up over the week, I quite like these songs coming out of nowhere into the iTunes top 10 :P I see the Wombles campaign has just utterly failed on its arse.

:D is wearing a Santa hat for me - but I had a problem where one of the emoticons didn't have one last year. I think it's a cache problem or something (clearly a computer expert talking here )
