Matt Cardle should be able to stay top 40 in the albums, he's on Loose Women today so thats good promo. He really needs a second single out there, first single wasnt good at all, this album doesnt deserve to flop, even though it hasnt done too badly at the moment, nearly 200,000 sales but should be much better then that, hopefully will see in New Year and not just plummet.

I thought Matt already had a second single that was out on the 5th, Starlight.
I think if Matt can clamber up to 300K then he should be safe for another album. But another 100K after christmas is going to be alot to ask

Ooh so Rebecca could outsell him with her album. Fabulous news. She IS the voice of last season

Rebecca is benefitting from the Christmas season, when the sales are double of those in October. Matt's and Cher's sales would likely be in the same range with December releases, and Rebecca would have sold a lot less if her album had dropped two months earlier!

As previously said, it's really easy to get lost in the Christmas mania when your album is released near Christmas, especially when you're not played on radio and it is your first album (without "CHRISTMAS" in the title).

We can't guess Cher and Matt sales would have been the same if released at the same time as Rebecca. She is doing really well considering the competitive season.

I don't see that as a solid argument to be honest. Surely, if anything Matt and Cher's albums should be selling by the truck-load if people were vying for them no matter when they are released.

But all albums sell a lot more than what they would normally, at any level of the chart, and proportionally to their sales level.

A bit off topic but apparently Rihanna's album is 2x platinum, is this true?

From the top 20 album and singles thread: http://www.buzzjack.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=136916

17 - 364200 - Rihanna - Talk That Talk

So it's sold platinum (300K). It's probably been shipped to 2XPlatinum though - and it looks on course to sell it by christmas day

Not always...look what happened to Pixie Lott and The Saturdays, if they had released their last albums a couple of months before I'm sure their chart positions would have been better andm probably, they would have not sink into oblivion by now.

Surprised Mariah Carey is still at number 7 :o

Honestly...the Matt Cardle album is excellent. There is plenty potential to sell and promote over a good 6 months if the right singles are released and the right promo lined up.

Stars and Lovers around Valentines Day with great promo could work wonders.

What benchmarks do record companies set for x-factor winners? to warrant another album being made? in terms of sales

he probably will be around 210k-220k by the years end.

I think he should be fine for a second album at least, Cher is recording her new album already and i think she sold less then Matt's..but i dont know i think every artist is treated differently.

Not gonna happen - radio & TV aren't very interested in ex-XF winners follow-ups.

I think they have faith in Cher's image and core fanbase but her material has been derided and mocked. She needs new stuff, hence the new album.

Lots of double standards in the press as to what gets labelled a flop. It's all I ever hear Matt called yet no-one says Cher is although her album has sold much less and she got far more help from Syco than he did.

There was a article in the Daily Mirror the other day "X factor Hits and Flops" Matt was labelled Flop, Joe is now a "hit" and doing well etc, Alexandra and Leona were the other hits. This time last year they would have called Joe a flop. My point being they are far too quick to write people off and some people actually seem to enjoy doing it.

I'm no Matt fan but I hate the double standard.
