oops I was looking at the wrong paper work

'Trailing back in 4th?' I think you have the positions muddled up, i'd understand if that was *40th but shes as HIGH as 4th. Thats pretty impressive with two TV performances and without the biggest promo of all radio & tv play. This is only an EP for xmas, the album is coming end of March, the EP has been a great idea, she's gained another top 10 hit with it and given her fans 3 new songs, she's only gained from this. :D

Question is has Pixie Lott's album had any sort of rise, she's had great promo this week, text santa, royal variety, this morning..the album is doing terribly.

Well Leona can look forward to poor sales as well with the way things are going, not as bad as Pixie as they're pretty horrific but she won't go double platinum. It should be noted that Pixie's got a number 1 hit on that record and even that wasn't enough to propel album sales so I don't think Leona getting to number 5 (and falling) with an unrelated EP is gonna do much for her is it. And I know it's only an EP and she has an album on the way, that's the point! She decided to push her album back for a poxy covers EP, instead of releasing her album in a brilliant album sales climate with great promotion. Syco should have went all out in the promotion of a single from the album/the album, with the focal point being the XF performance. She obviously feels she has enough money to not be bothered about this kind of thing but her status is plummeting. The same thing that happened to Westlife is happening to Leona... Treading water, being complacent and not progressing, and before you know it she's irrelevant. There was surprise in the media that she was even allowed to perform on the XF final, that's how fast she's fading.

I'm sorry you can't compare Leona to Westlife. Westlife have been in the music business for a long time, its only recently their sales have dwindled. Also the music market has sunk, we did have other music outlets at the time with Zavvi and Woolies, even HMW had to cut some of their losses and still treading water. Just because an artist is doing bad at the moment its not their problem you have to sell your music to the people and find other outlets to purchase from.

And the timing has to be precise look at Adele with 21 3.7million in a year near enough nothing else stood in her way, plus there wasn't any other big major release throughout the year with all the big releases waiting for the last quarter to release their material.

I think Leona will do better in the new year, it might surprise us you never know.

This year had had huge album releases from Beyonce, Gaga, Jessie J, Bruno Mars, Coldplay and Rihanna. Adele has managed to smash all the competition because her material has been the best and her album is full of single worthy solid songs not because she released when there were no big releases.

Wow there's an awful lot of artists failing out there if you think not going double platinum is failing. Very few people can maintain (or even get) the sales Leona had in the first place so the only way is down in some respects. I'm not sure how a Top 5 hit can ever be a failure though. If it is there's an awful lot of failure behind her. Not everything can be #1. It's unsustainable.

The first 6 months there was only Jesse, Rihanna (Loud) and Bruno Mars though it was rather bleak at the time, I wouldn't call Lady Gaga's second album that much of a success though, bite my tongue here before flying objects are directed at me. As I said most of the big releases came out in the last quarter of the year. And Loud was a consistant seller throughout the year.

Is Rizzle Kicks' album in the top 40?

Nope

On that note time for me to bail out before Lady Gaga fans fire missiles at me.

Cee-lo Green's Anyway or Michael Bublé's Christmas (Baby Please Come Home) could be top 40 on sunday.

I think the point with the Lady Gaga album is that it everyone thought at the beginning of the year that it would be the biggest album of 2011 - coming off the back of The Fame (Monster). To be fair to the album though, it's still a high selling album in the climate we're now in.

For me, the biggest surprise is probably Beyonce, again it was the follow-up to a very successful 3rd album campaign, released at a time of year where the focus was on her.

As it stands, it doesn't look good for Leona. Collide made a whimper rather than a bang in the singles chart, and I'm finding it hard to judge whether Hurt has been a success or not. There seems to be a bit of a backlash about the choice of song, considering its lyrical content and that again she's gone for a cover to save her career. Part of why Run was such a success was because it was an accident - covered for Live Lounge and people loving it so much that a release was in-demand. Stop Crying Your Heart Out and Hurt feel like deliberate attempts to re-create Run but the magic just isn't there. As it stands, I'm not sure Leona could reach platinum, let alone double - especially as 2012 could see a complete collapse in general sales anyway. I guess it's just wait and see what single will lead the album. If it can capture the public's imagination, then she'll be onto a winner, if not....

is anyone surprised of Susan Boyle's sales compared to previous albums?

I was going to write in my post before that Leona's career was built upon "her Voice", but then stopped writing it. But actually seeing this, makes me think this is part of the problem for both Leona and Susan Boyle. Both their carreers have been built upon their voices, and both had compelling sales for their debut albums. But after that, well, where exactly do you go from there? Everyone has the album which focuses on their voices. So their follow-ups were both built on the "biggest selling albums" route. But both their 2nd albums, while doing well, didn't light up the charts as much as their debuts because everyone had already bought into the debuts.

With the 3rd album, all they can offer is their voices as thats what their carreers have been built upon, but we've heard it before, so why invest in yet another album? There needs to be a new angle. There hasn't been a new angle with Susan, which could be a reason why her album has failed to sell. Leona tried to find a new one by going into a more dance genre but it's failed to capture the public's imagination, so could a dance Leona album really work?

Leona: As in most cases, its all down to the tunes. 'Bleeding love' was a great song, really good and a fantastic lead single that propelled the Album to eventually over 3 million UK sales. Her second album was fine, but didnt have those killer songs the first one had. imo

As for 'Collide' I want to forget that autotuned Euro-pap...I mean, autotuning Leonas voice, what were they thinking???.

As Adele has shown and Leona did on her first album, you dont need flashy gimmicks etc etc if you have a great voice and great songs.

Of course, as things turned out, even if it *had* been as big as people thought, it still wouldn't have been the biggest album of the year...

I agree that if Leona can release a song that captures the public's imagination the way Bleeding Love did then she'll be onto a winner. (I'm not saying she needs a new Bleeding Love though - we have that song - a carbon copy of it isn't going to work.

The thing that separates Adele (and Amy Whinehouse) from Leona is that the songs they release, they themselves have put their heart and soul into it. Alot of people can relate to songs like Rehab, Back To Black, Someone Like You, Set Fire To the Rain (the bit "there's a side to you that I never knew, never knew, all the things you say, they were never true, never true and the games you play, you would always win, always win I can relate to) because the lyrics are so powerful and you know they come from the heart of the singer singing them. Leona singing Hurt on X Factor - a song about drug addiction, is hard to wash because you don't really believe Leona, whether she interprets the song in another way or not. If she can release a song, that she's written, where you can tell it's from the heart, then I think she'll have the public onboard again. (and that the song is a good song of course)
