December 19, 201114 yr Great to see LMFAO finally overtake Jessie J   Not so great to see Maroon 5 overtake LMFAO, but at the same it's not a surprise and should sell 1m. When was the last year when we got 2 million sellers in a year? Must have been 2002 with Will Young and Gareth Gates or am I forgetting someone?
December 19, 201114 yr It's rather apt for Moves Like Jagger to end 2011 as the #2 of the year really isn't it :D Glad to see What Makes You Beautiful enter the YTD top 20 as it really is one of the best debut pop singles of the year imo. A concerning percentage of the top 10/20 singles of the year were from the first six months of it, have sales for the top sellers really jumped off a cliff in the last few months? I remember in 2009 we had quite a few weeks of 100k+ selling #1's in a row in November/December and into January 2010 even with Iyaz but it's a bit worrying that Olly Murs got to #1 on a sale of under 50k in mid December... I know that songs released later in the year obviously have to play catch up but still, it's not as if anything charting high currently is going to hit the 750k mark any time soon...I know We Found Love has but most of the current big sellers look like they'll go gold and that's about it. I wonder why the really BIG and enduring hits have been lacking in the last few months, two or three songs aside. I know i go on about it but the OA/OS thing had a big affect for big sales at the start of the year but as the years went on the record companies have reacted against it by holding more releases back which imo holds sales back. Look at how great a song WMYB was but its only now its approaching the ytd top 20!! The held back singles have mainly been in the domestic market which there are more releases of in the 4th quarter!!
December 19, 201114 yr Ouch @ Jai McDowall. Not a brilliant result for a talent show winner. Still there is always a porn career if the music career isn't working out ;) In fairness, I think he was helped out with the Scottish vote.
