Posted December 19, 201114 yr Military Wives storm ahead in Xmas No.1 race, outselling Little Mix 6-1 Source: MW 10:27 | Tuesday December 20, 2011 Wherever You Are by The Military Wives (with Gareth Malone) already looks destined to claim 2011’s Christmas No.1 – and to become the UK's biggest-selling single for six years. The Decca single sold 242,000 copies across Sunday and Monday, according to Official Chart Company data - more than X Factor winners Little Mix sold in the whole of last week. The last release to sell as many copies in its first two days was That’s My Goal, from 2005 X Factor winner Shayne Ward – which shifted 313,000 copies in 48 hours in December that year. Little Mix's Cannonball – widely seen as The Military Wives’ biggest competition for the Xmas No.1 spot - has sold just 38,000 copies across Monday and Tuesday, but is still the second-biggest seller so far this week. The Military Wives’ single is in aid of The Royal British Legion and the Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen Families Association. It is performed by a choir made up of women whose partners are deployed in Afghanistan, who were brought together by Malone for the fourth series of BBC2’s The Choir. Head of Decca Classics Mike Bartlett told Music Week earlier this month that the label was hoping for first-week sales of half-a-million. "The Christmas No.1 should not be a forgone conlcusion and it's great this is capturing people's imaginations," he said. ====================================================== Top 40 Only Singles 1 Military Wives (242k) 2 Little Mix (38k) 3 Paul Mealor - A Spotless Rose 4 Alex Day 5 Coldplay Top 10 6 Nirvana (Top 5 once #3 is removed) Top 15 Rizzle Kicks Stacey Solomon Top 20 Lou Monte Cast of TOWIE Top 30 Rihanna Christina Perri Top 40 Lana Del Rey ======================================= Albums 1 Michael Buble 2 Amy Winehouse 3 Coldplay 4 Olly Murs 5 Rihanna Top 10 Westlife Bruno Mars Top 15 Take That Top 20 Jessie J Michael Buble - Crazy Love Top 30 Bee Gees Will Young James Morrison Rod Stewart Top 40 Drake Rihanna - Loud ======================================= ARTIST UPDATES Singles Lloyd/Andre 3000/Lil' Wayne 5+3 Rihanna/Calvin Harris 5+5 Avicii 10+3 The Pogues/Kirsty MacColl 10+4 Maroon 5/Christina 10+6 Mariah Carey 20+1 T-Pain 20+4 Beyonce 20+5 Jessie J [WYA] 20+6 One Direction [WMYB] 20+8 Kelly Rowland 30+3 Lady Gaga [MTN] 30+5 Albums Adele [21] 5+2, [19] 30+8 Rebecca Ferguson 5+3 One Direction 10+1 Noel Gallagher 10+5 Susan Boyle 10+7 Snow Patrol 20+1 Lady Gaga 20+2 Joe McElderry 20+10 Beyonce 30+1

December 20, 201114 yr Author Morning all, the race for #1 is going to be interesting, will the Donkey catch the Military Wives.
December 20, 201114 yr Somebody can merge this into the Sunday Chart Predictions thread if they like, but it's good to have this info up now - with sales! From the OCC website; ‘Wherever You Are’ by The Military Wives with Gareth Malone has taken a big step ahead of the rest of the field, selling 242,000 copies across the counter in their first two days on sale, according to Official Charts Company data. Sales reports for the single’s first two days on sale this week (Sunday and Monday) indicate that The Military Wives Choir may have become the fastest-selling single for six years. The last time any release sold as many copies in its first two days was when 2005 X Factor winner Shayne Ward’s ‘That’s My Goal’ sold 313,000 copies in its opening two days in December that year. In doing so, Ward’s single became the third fastest selling single of all time after Elton John's ‘Candle In The Wind’ and Will Young's ‘Evergreen’, which sold 685,000 and 400,000 copies in their first days of sale. The Military Wives are currently in first place in the rankings, having sold six times as many copies as the second biggest selling single of the week so far - Little Mix's ‘Cannonball’, which has sold 38,000 copies. Other big rivals set to enter the Top 10 include ‘Forever Yours’ by YouTube phenomenon Alex Day, Coldplay’s former Number 2 hit, ‘Paradise’ and Nirvana’s 1991 hit, ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’. Other contenders for the Official Christmas Number 1 slot this week, Lou Monte’s ‘Dominick The Donkey’ (which has been championed by BBC Radio 1 DJ Chris Moyles), two versions ‘Last Christmas’ (Wham!’s original and a cover by the cast of The Only Way Is Essex), and Stacey Solomon’s rendition of ‘Driving Home For Christmas’ (as featured in the Iceland TV ad campaign) all take up places further down the Official Singles Chart Top 20. The Military Wives’ single (which is in aid of The Royal British Legion and the Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen Families Association) is performed by a choir made up of women whose loved ones are deployed in Afghanistan which was put together by Gareth Malone for the fourth series of BBC2’s The Choir. The song combines a poem compiled from letters to and from servicemen and their wives, with music composed by Royal Wedding composer Paul Mealor. The song was performed by the Military Wives at the Royal British Legion’s Festival Of Remembrance earlier this autumn. In a recent interview with theofficialcharts.com, Military Wives’s lead singer Sam Stevenson revealed her heavy rock roots and what it would mean to keep Simon Cowell from the festive top spot “I was all behind Rage Against The Machine, I mean I love Rage Against The Machine anyway, but just to kick the X Factor off the top spot I think I would have voted for ‘Barbie Girl’ or something, as long as it wasn’t X Factor.” I think it's fair to say that they've won  :cheer:
December 20, 201114 yr Morning all, the race for #1 is going to be interesting, will the Donkey catch the Military Wives. Over 200k+ behind so far after two days of sales, what do you think? :P
December 20, 201114 yr Author Over 200k+ behind so far after two days of sales, what do you think? :P Its just a one horse donkey race This time last week I really was having doubts about it, I was proven wrong.
December 20, 201114 yr Oh... Not that it wasn't obvious anyway :P That selling 100x more article was wrong then, it's not even selling 10x more than LM :P It's selling more than 5x though so yeah, it's safe to say they've got it in the bag, about 550k?
December 20, 201114 yr Over 200k+ behind so far after two days of sales, what do you think? :P Yes all over for the race for No 1 well and truly. Little Mix should make the 100k mark- just.

December 20, 201114 yr Wow that is some amazing sales, I think it's safe to say they will sell 500k+ this week, and make the year end top 10 in 2 weeks :)
December 20, 201114 yr Author Yes all over for the race for No 1 well and truly. Little Mix should make the 100k mark- just. I think its going to pass 500k quite easily now for the week, its a shame we might not get any sales info from MW next week, hopefully OCC use their tweeter page on Sunday.
December 20, 201114 yr It'll be gutting to see The A Team or more likely On The Floor tumble out of the end of year top ten at the last minute but at the same time I'm thoroughly impressed at these sales, although not at all surprised that Military Wives have managed to do it comfortably. It's seemed fairly clear to me for at least two or three weeks that this was going to be mammoth. And my 60k prediction for Nirvana was WAY optimistic by the looks of it, considering all the backlash I got on here and my blog for daring to suggest that the campaign wouldn't work and would have a poor group member to sales conversion rate, it's looking like even I was being too generous by suggesting a #3 peak this week :o Somebody that left an anonymous comment on my blog suggested that Smells Like Teen Spirit would do 420k this week...
December 20, 201114 yr Seems spot on to what I have witnessed so far. For every 7 singles I touched 6 were the Wives. Bonkers on a stick!
December 20, 201114 yr Author Love to see the sales split, to see how well the physicals only are doing for the track, I think its going to be quite high on physicals only.
