Even songs with massive airplay AND sales miss #1 though...a lot.

Because they pretty much need to peak at roughly the same time, which doesn't happen very often.

I just listened to Somebody That I Used To Know and God, it's terrible. His voice annoys me so.

Yes, he has quite a distinctive voice. I love the song though. I can't stop listening to it. I think Kimbra sounds like Katy Perry too.

Yeah, I think that's the main reason why they usually miss #1. And even on the airplay side of things, you get the pop and urban stations which tend to playlist songs quite instantly (think Capital and Radio 1 in the UK), and then if the song is radio friendly (like Hey, Soul Sister, Pumped Up Kicks, etc.) all the adult stations (think Heart in the UK) suddenly start playlisting the song 6 months later, giving those songs massive chart runs. And with urban songs, they often end up with massive chart runs because of the remixes. For example, with Motivation by Kelly Rowland, her record label kept sending a different remix of the song to radio stations like every month, which kept it high in the airplay chart for seemingly most of 2011.

Turn Me On up to #106! :o

Is there any top 10 contender songs out next week? I think Pixie might re-enter the top 10 on iTunes as she's reducing the gap quite fast on Swedish House Mafia and she has promotion next week aswell.

Alyssa Reid should get top 10 with Alone Again, she has brilliant airplay especially on TV. I agree with Pixie too, I think the single version may get her back in. I have a feeling they might rush release Will.I.AM's T.H.E. as well so that'll be an (unwelcome) addition as well I'd imagine.

Further down the chart, Jess Mills should probably make an appearance with Pixelated People (but she deserves to be top 10!)

Re; the 'Alone Again' discussion I also don't think it's anywhere near as good as Heart's original - their version had soaring vocals whilst Alyssa's cover, in all fairness, is in a much lower key so the soaring vocals have become rather subdued instead. I hope it's not #1 as it would not be a worthy chart topper imo, but this is the UK charts so it probably will be.

Like GD pointed out, 'Titanium' will probably peak at #2 officially and sell 4 times as much as 'Alone Again' in total. Then there's Gotye who is going to be sticking around for ages but again will probably miss the #1 spot but sell buckletloads by the end of the year.

And you poached my "Kobbar" of the Week :nono:

In the US they do almost everything on air, on sale, and it's exactly the same. They have LOTS of massive hits only peaking at #2 or #3. Infact, I think it's worse there than in the UK sometimes with regards to massive hits not getting #1.

Although the influence of airplay in their charts is often a major reason for huge hits (that have often been at #1 on the digital songs chart) missing out on #1. Airplay massively slows down the entire top 100, not just at the top but all the way through, if the UK employed this policy Moves Like Jagger could have been looking to break Bryan Adams weeks at #1 record by now

edit: didn't read the rest of the topic before replying, I see this has already been covered :P

David Guetta and Gotye are both likely to be #1 imo. I think people are underestimating how big Somebody That I Used to Know will be.

If you take airplay out of the US charts, leaving just sales, the US would have worse chart runs than the UK could ever dream of. Some of the Glee Cast songs would've got to #1 and dropped out of the top 100 within a few weeks. There was infact a Taylor Swift song that got to #1 on the sales only chart, and then dropped out of the top 100 entirely the following week. So it happens in on air, on sale environments too.

Although I clearly get what you meant here but I'm still not sure if I'm going to consider 'T.H.E.' as 'rush-release' in any way, to be honest.

Yeah, it would be the same situation to Just the Way You Are, We Found Love, Hold It Against Me, Price Tag, etc. Although they all were released earlier than their original release dates, they were still held back.

I know it isn't as good as the original, but I think it's added quite a lot to it, its successfully brought an 80s classic up-to-date (whatever you choose to interpret that to mean), and this was why I thought she'd never get big, her vocals are an acquired taste. However, I do really like the way she croons on the chorus, it's done differently from Heart's, but it manages to.. mean more. Her verses are little more than bridges to the chorus, and I always love bridges to the chorus.

I think everyone who's slagging Alyssa off for ruining an classic should listen to this catchy number. This is what could be if she wasn't clearly a one-hit wonder before her career even began. The people who are buying Alone Again probably won't buy a club song though... :(

I actually kind of want them to release "T.H.E." on Sunday, I prefer it to "Alone Again" and it'll mean that hopefully it's not as much of a threat when Gotye is closer to getting to #1. I don't want "Somebody That I Used To Know" to become another "Moves Like Jagger".

Even though I do love Alone Again, I think they would've been better marketing Alyssa as a more 'upbeat' artist with The Game as lead single followed by XO and then maybe Alone Again. But I'm not entirely sure The Game would be looking like a top 5 hit if it was in AA's place...

I'd be very shocked if the next UK release (likely The Game) - if one even happens that is - even made top 40 though, as I said All Around The World are awful at handling artists :(

On another note, why is "Kiss The Stars" now looking more likely to make it to #10 than "Born To Die"? It's complete w***.

Kiss the Stars is rising again? :puke2: Ahhhh, I've really gone off Pixie recently.

It wouldn't. Plain and simple. I'm pretty sure the hype around Alone Again is because of the Heart sample. Nothing more. The Game, as much as I love it, is hella generic, and there's nothing that would have convinced radio to support it like they are doing with Alone Again. I would love The Game to get top 40, or even top 75, but it probably won't.

'Hold It Against Me' was held back for what? 7-10 days? So I don't think you can class that in the same way as the others you've mentioned.
I'm going to join the Pixie hate (aren't we all) - I will cut someone if she manages to beat Lana :( I used to adore her but Kiss The Stars is so average... Shame the public are lapping it up as it looks set to re-enter top 10 :(

And 'International Love' is more likely to hit #10 than either... :P

After listening to "The Game", I can conclude it's just as bad as "Alone Again" - and just as unoriginal! How nice of her to sample/steal the structure of Rihanna's "Hard", but making it so very lifeless; yawn...
