If the Tories win in Eastleigh it will be the first time a party in government has gained a seat in a byelection since 1982.

INCORRECT. Labour gained Glasgow North East from Speaker in 2009 (and West Bromwich West in 2000), as well as Falkirk West from Independent in 2000 http://members.lycos.co.uk/jodylei/Smilies/david.gif

Gains from The Speaker don't really count as they were basically Labour seats where there was no official Labour candidate for as long as the Speaker represented the seat. Similarly, Falkirk West had been won by Labour at the previous election and the sitting MP was expelled from the party.
It's no fun when you think I'm being serious in overpedantic nitpicking!

If UKIP want to be taken seriously as a political party, then Nigel Farage needs to stand in this election. Despite what has been said about defections from the Tories, there is no way that they can win seats at the next election unless they already have an MP in position. And given the stories about the loonies being kicked out of the party for their abhorrent views in recent weeks (with surely more to come in the coming months), it's the only way they can stem the inevitable wane of support come 2015.

It will be a real risk for him. The Tories will probably have a real go at him and, if they succeed, could damage UKIP's reputation irrevocably. The Lib Dems and Labour may not go for him so aggressively as a strong UKIP could help them. He may duck out of it with the excuse that he doesn't think one person should be both an MP and MEP. However, as he stood in the General Election, that would be a pretty feeble exc use.

I think there is a real chance that UKIP will win a byelection in this parliament. However, I don't think Eastleigh will be it although I reserve the right to change my mind  I still don't think they will win any seats in the next General Election.

Their thumping in Rotherham makes me think that won't happen, I don't think anywhere will go for them enough for them to sneak in.

Even if he is acquitted (or charges are dropped) maybe some people will wake up to the fact that something as seemingly innocuous as getting someone else to take your speeding points can result is a jail sentence.

Shouldn't do though as it's a minor offence imo. The law's an ass sometimes. Time they went about catching real criminals like murderers and drug-pushers instead of picking on motorists. :(

Oh good bloody lord. The horsemen are NIGH!

Chris an I are agreeing on something. Motorists are terrorised in this country by the government through Tax and then its seems that they spend more time after speeders than murders. Or at least they do in my county.

I can see both of your points but this case is even worse because he is supposed to have a responsibility and he also made up a massive lie. He is not above the law and it isn't fair for him to get away with it.

Most murderers are caught. Speeding motorists also kill or don't you think that is serious?

Oh.and if you want to quote Dickens, "the law is a ass, a idiot".

Exactly, he's in a position of authority and of trust, he should be LEADING by example. We all know politicians lie but the consequences for being found out should be severe

Do not lump me in with that. I agreed that motorists are the victim of witchhunts in this country not that Huhne should not face prison charges. He lied to a court of the law, he deserves the sentence handed to him and I bloody hope he gets prison.

How are motorists victims of a witch hunt? Speeding is an offence which sometimes kills.

Exactly, you're not a victim if you speed, you make that decision and you should face the consequences for it.

Unless you're talking about the public perception of motorists, which is fair enough.

Have you seen the price of fuel these days? Also the talk about the government changing the VED bands, again, because they worked too well and more people are switching to lower emission vehicles (the entire aim of the graded system) which is reducing the amount of money the governments cash cow rakes in.

The government only gives a shit about the amount of money they can steal from motorists and not the motorists themselves. Hence the use of the phrase witch hunt.

I never claimed to be a victim, nor a speeder. I didn't say I had a problem with the law, I have a problem with the police hiding in fucking bushes to catch people. (On the hill down from Alton Towers. Police car fitted with radar was hidden from view of the southbound carriageway by hedges. I saw it in my rearview mirror after I passed it, under the limit)

Never had a problem with the police for speeding, giving that I usually drive under the limit anyway (much to the annoyance of fellow motorists, I imagine).

Traffic wardens and car park attendants on the other hand...

The cost of motoring has been fallimg in real terms for many years. OTOH, the coct of public transport has been rising. If anyone is being fleeced it is those of us who rely on public transport.

There is. of course, one easy way to avoid being caught speeding. Stick to the sspeed limit. That way it desn't matter what tactics the police use, they won't catch you. Simple really.
