About Jessie J's next single, I would also prefer her to use My Shadow. With regards to David Guetta, I was thinking maybe he was going with I Can Only Imagine, since he performed it at the Grammys and it's top 100 on US iTunes now. My favourite from his album is I Just Wanna F, but there's no point in him releasing that since radio wouldn't play it. The most cherry-picked album track usually seems to be Crank It Up, so maybe that would be a good option (plus, I'd like Akon back in the chart, even if the song isn't that good). I don't think Repeat would be a good choice, especially at the same time as LaserLight, but we'll see I suppose. He has so many potential singles on his album though.

I would really like to buy the new song from Dot Rotten, Dappy and Chiddy Bang but alas the record companies rule!!

Same here tbh. As a fan of those songs, it's annoying, since they maybe get higher peaks, but they'll sell less overall, and be really low on the year-end charts. Everyone will call them "flops" for their peaks, but in reality they probably would've sold an extra 100,000+ if they were available from their premiere imo.

What I mean is that people didn't have enough money left after Christmas to buy other songs which is why troublemaker was as high as number 3

To think it through again, actually you're right somewhat but you shouldn't forget two things:

1. Giftcards people received or Christmas are in action in the first couple of weeks of January too (still)

2. 79p/99p is not a price you wouldn't pay if you want new music even after Chtristmas, so it sounds odd, to say after Christmas people don't have money to buy music. Maybe albums yes, but a 99p song...

Is Dappy and Dott Rotten out tonight ?

Nope, not this week. :( I really, really, really hope Dot Rotten can go top 40 when he is actually released (especially since even JME can get to #41 ).

Dot Rotten is a cracking song, if it goes alist on radio 1 it will make the top 10 i think - its a great tune!!

So Eric have i won you over to OA/OS after all this time lol.....as i always say there will be less illegal dloading with it and a song will rise to the top if its good and they market things right!

The bizzare thing is that UK based record companies class chart peaks more important to them than having a massive selling single that doesn't make #1. The introduction of that UK #1 Single Award won't be helping matters either - it's blates the record company that win the award, not the artist.

Gotye is a fine example right now of releasing a single and allowing the track to climb to its peak, increasing its sales as he goes along. 'STIUTK' could end up increasing its weekly sales this week despite slipping 01-03 in the charts.

Also held back releases don't guarantee instant success. 'T.H.E.' could've been #1 3 weeks ago had it been released then but by leaving nearly 2 months, those that probably would've bought it decided they were bored of the song by the time it was finally released. DJ Fresh has done well for the week but it's already down to #3 on iTunes so it's a definite one week wonder.

I've never been against on air, on sale. Many of my favourite artists release on air, on sale. I just think it's silly that so many of you think we'll never get any frontloaded songs anymore with on air, on sale, and also the chart would be even slower paced than it is now. I Need a Doctor was released OA/OS in the US last year, and it debuted at #1, then fell out of the top 20 the following week.

Exactly, also most of last years biggest sellers were OA/OS records. The point about THE is right also, thats exactly my feelings on the song, i liked it 3 weeks ago especially the fact Jagger was in a top 10 hit for the first time since 1985 but i didnt dload it because i am really bored of it.

Gotye and Aloe Blacc symbolise the effectiveness of the strategy but its important to get things right for weaker songs, if they are sent to radio first then after a week the video premieres than finally 2 weeks after this TV promo could grb you that no1 spot. But for great tracks like Gotye/Aloe Blacc they just need radio and maybe a bit of video play!

Wonder what LMFAO will perform on Wossy soon, they advertised their album during the break saying you can complete the album if you go on itunes for cheap!

Give Me Everything is probably a better example to use than Somebody That I Used to Know. They had similar climbs to #1 (even though people make out as if Gotye took months to get there, but he got there quite fast tbh ):

Gotye: 36-21-7-3-1 - 5 weeks

Pitbull: 35-25-12-4-1 - 5 weeks

Except with Pitbull, his music video and his Radio 1 playlisting didn't happen until the week that he was at #12 (and he was top 10 on iTunes at that point), whilst Gotye had his music video since last summer when the song was big in Europe and Australia, and was playlisted by Radio 1 quite a bit earlier in its chart life than Pitbull was, and Gotye had the Walk Off the Earth video going viral to boost him up the chart.

So I'd say Pitbull's success with on air, on sale is a better example than Gotye's, since he got to #1 with much less promotion, and his was closer to on air, on sale, in the sense that I knew Somebody That I Used to Know since Autumn 2011 (and lots of other people knew it back then too), whilst Give Me Everything I first heard literally when it was first released in the UK.

But Pitbull had the benefit of being a fairly well-known name in the UK, alongside Ne-Yo and Afrojack that would've helped out the track initially. Gotye (and Kimbra for that matter) was a complete nobody in the UK and had to rely on just the song's reputation to help him out.

Don't forget Nayer's fan.

I felt there was more hype around Somebody That I Used to Know, since I remember people (and these are normal people who don't hang around on music forums looking at international charts in their spare time) posting the song on Facebook and stuff saying "This is so amazing" late last year, before the song was even released, but nobody even knew Give Me Everything long before it was released.

You do have a point though, I think the hype from Somebody That I Used to Know being a worldwide smash in 2011 probably was similar in magnitude to what there ususally is for a new Pitbull/Ne-Yo/Afrojack song (which I guess is reflected in their similar chart runs at the beginning).

On the subject of Gotye/Kimbra, I do hope STIUTK being huge helps out Kimbra's solo career, her album Vows is amazing  Not as good as Somebody That I Used To Know, but then not much is :P Of course it won't, I can see Gotye being pretty much a mirror of Owl City success-wise, and Kimbra probably even chart with anything else.

Gotye is most definitely the Owl City of 2011/2012 - no one had really heard of him before, and in releasing what he even describes as the only 'big hit' on the album, 'Making Mirrors', he's already used up his best material. I imagine R1 will playlist the second single before anyone else does and claim any potential success, but I don't see it doing much. The album should debut at #4/5 this Sunday though - whereas Owl City debuted at #8 - so Gotye has one up on Owl City there.
