February 12, 201214 yr Why does everything have a "tilda" separating the artist and the album title, but Coldplay have a "minus"? That's all going to change in a min, once MW updates.
February 12, 201214 yr Now I haven't looked at the charts in a very very very long time, basically everything in the top 20 in the last 5 years have been pure garbage, I can't even name the last decent number 1 (not counting RATM - Killing In The Name as that didn't really get to number 1 based on the song), so I'm pretty f***ing surprised to see an actual talented artist with an original and unique song (aka doesnt sound like every other f***ing track in the top 20 like pretty much everything else that has been number 1 for the last 5+ years). Basically Goyte being number 1, f*** yes. About f***ing time something that was actually good was number 1.
February 12, 201214 yr Author 'The Motto' just about snuck into the top 100 :D That's pretty much the most it could ever hope for so I'm very pleased to see it manage it. Shame it needed a price cut though. Also great to see a song like 'Rack City' as high as #98 (and this one without a price cut)! Also great to see Crush On You and Time back in the top 100 due to their price reductions. Urgh at Chasing Cars somehow sneaking back in yet again as well though  'Bad Girls' has become M.I.A.'s 3rd highest peaking single (4th including 'Give Me All Your Luvin'') :D James Vincent McMorrow back in both charts and a new peak for his album :D New peak for No Light, No Light as well. In Adele news, 'Someone Like You' has hit an all-time low (although still a 55th straight week in the top 60) but 'Rolling In The Deep' has rebounded a bit back into the top 80 from its own all-time low last week. Basically Goyte being number 1, f*** yes. About f***ing time something that was actually good was number 1. I agree with you...kind of (although there have been a fair amount of #1s I've liked the past few years, but it's still rare for me). Killing in the Name is actually one of the worst #1s in the past few years imo, but I love Gotye's song. I agree that it's such a victory for the charts that it got to #1, and I haven't seen everybody so happy about a #1 in a long time. I think the way the charts were last year, with half of the top 40 sounding the same (American eurodance club-bangers with autotuned rapping on) has really woken people up. Looking back at previous charts, I can never see a time in the 70's, 80's or even 90's when one genre has dominated in such an extreme way before. People always say "Oh there were bad songs in the chart before", but if anybody can find me a chart from before the 00's where over 20 songs were almost identical, then please show me one. So it's nice that this has been #1. We really needed this. 'The Motto' just about snuck into the top 100 :D That's pretty much the most it could ever hope for so I'm very pleased to see it manage it. I agree with you about The Motto and Rack City!!! I NEVER even dreamed songs like those could ever brace the UK top 100 ever again! :o And Niggas in Paris might get in soon too. Too much for me to handle! Although I think Rack City did have a discount on iTunes aswell. Or at least, that's what someone said when I asked in the iTunes thread. So it's nice that this has been #1. We really needed this. yeah the problem is with the music industry today no majors are willing to take risks so they just take already well sold formulas on all their artists making it all sound the same then this transates to the charts as radio plays mostly major label stuff, leading to the charts being epically boring and have a lack of eccentricness they had like pre-2005, so it's a real win for music to have a song like this, without a campaign or any bollocks like that get to number 1 naturally without having made a track that sounds like the rest.

I think the rise of downloads could've hurt the mainstream music scene. You mentioned 2005 specifically aswell, and that happens to be the year downloads were included in the US's charts (the most influential music scene in the world, especially in the Internet age). Including downloads was probably the right thing to do, but I think it might've made the music in the charts a lot worse.

I wasn't trying to be specific with 2005, but yeah I might aswell have been, 2005 give or take a year.

And yes, I was incredibly glad when I opened this thread! Surely the best #1 since Robyn's With Every Heartbeat. That was 5 years ago, oh my.
February 12, 201214 yr well yeah thats what I sort of meant by 'the music industry today', due to download and reality tv culture it's the majors not taking risks, it would be silly and backwards not to inculde downloads as naturally thats just how the industry has moved, but unfortunately it's made popular music dramatically worse. I wasn't trying to be specific with 2005, but yeah I might aswell have been, 2005 give or take a year. I think it's clear that the rise of downloads, the decline of the CD single and the resultant higher sales have made it far more difficult for bands to make the top 40 on the strength of their fanbase in the same way they used to. To me or you that means the quality of the charts has declined compared to pre-downloads but sadly they're probably a better reflection of popularity these days than they used to be - it just so happens that a lot of what's popular we consider crap :P That's not to say it's a level playing field by any means - it's still far too controlled by conservative record companies and the singles chart fails to reflect many trends, most of which these days are internet-based. For instance (and I know you hate him ), Skrillex's success in the singles chart is wildly disproportionate to his "true" popularity. Other acts (Foo Fighters, for example) also do disproportionately poorly with singles but that's less of an issue because their popularity is reflected in album sales and gig receipts.
February 12, 201214 yr Gotye/Guetta is this the first time that the top 2 artists had the same consonantal sounds? Edited February 12, 201214 yr by tonyttt31
February 12, 201214 yr Author is this the first time that the top 2 artists had the same consonantal sounds? No, because they don't - Guetta has a hard 't' sound but Gotye is either similar to a 'ch' sound or a hard 't' followed by the consonantal 'y' sound, depending on how the hell you're supposed to pronounce it (still can't figure it out ) Plus there's the whole 'David' part of Guetta's name :P Edited February 12, 201214 yr by Bré

February 12, 201214 yr I pronounce it Got-yay, as if it's a French word with an accent on the "e" (although it's NOT a French word, and there's no accent, so I assume I'm pronouncing it wrong ).
