I'm sorry but Motivation was not 'everywhere'. You may have heard it a few times in the shops/clubs or you're friends may have played it a few times, but I fail to see how it impacted the wider society like LTWYL did.

If I ask anyone I know not one of them would be able to tell me what Motivation sounds like, yet they'll all be able to sing lines from the eoy top 20s of the past few years.

I'm not saying it was as big as Love the Way You Lie. I really like Love the Way You Lie, but how did that "impact society"? It was a massive hit, yes, but that's about it. Motivation didn't "impact society" either, mind, but I'm just saying.

I'm pretty sure most people I know can tell me what Motivation sounds like. Just because your friends don't know what it sounds like, it doesn't mean the song isn't well-known.

That's when I tell a song is properly big, my friends start to talk about it  Like me and my friend were singing Somebody That I Used To Know in Maths the other day, and when he asked if I'd heard it at first, I was like 'yeah, in July last year' and he was like 'wtf'
Ugh, I really hope Marcus slows down and ends up peaking lower than the original :puke: I'm not sure I'd want any of these new releases to get to number 1, so gotye for a fourth week please, or nicki if it picks up again
Maybe that's just a symptom of the download age. I imagine in such a fast-moving chart in 2000, really, really small hits could make the top 40 (and then they're free-fall I guess). Whilst now, they don't stand a chance, and instead we've got Only Girl and Firework hogging the top 40 spots for months, and those songs, which may be equally as big as the average #35 hit from 2000, are maybe just charting at #150 for a month or so instead.

That's simply because in 2000 you had about 11 or 12wks to buy a single and if you didn't it got deleted and you couldn't buy it anymore so all those sales would be crammed into those weeks and if you wanted it after that then you had to buy the album (jeez how many albums did i buy for one song :D ) so that might account for the slump in album sales since 2009ish. Also with higher sales all around it makes it harder for niche acts to enter the top 40 like they used to hence less new entries which results in less airplay etc and the whole things because cyclical.

VERY few songs impact society!

As for your second point the converse is also true, just because you and you're friends talk about a song does not mean that a song is well known.

I'm not picking on you Eric just saying that the arguments you use are equally effective points to be made in opposition to your views.

I think I heard 'Motivation' once on the radio and that was all, it was not massive, it had hardly any airplay and wasn't even made into a proper single. Its not a well-known song in the UK (although I love it)

Yeah, that's why it didn't sell a lot and didn't chart very well.

Did you read HausofKubrick's post, since I was replying to him. He said:

I said that to show him the converse is also true, just like you're doing to me.

Exactly, but you described it as 'massive' despite poor sales, as if it will always be remembered and people will look back shocked at its poor chart position? They won't, due to its lack of airplay, it would be lucky for someone from the UK to look back at 'Motivation' and even remember it at all.

Motivation didn't do well in the charts because it wasn't played on the radio much I think.

We're seeing this with Niggas in Paris at the moment. That song has been very popular for months already, yet it only gets into the charts when Radio 1 playlists it and it gets a music video.

There's also the fact you can't even *name* it in public without risking arrest for 'racially aggravated behaviour'... :P

'Somebody I Used to Know' will end up being forgotten by the end of the year anyway, just like 'Fireflies' and we'll never hear from Gotye again.

I seriously doubt STIUTK will be forgotten any time soon. It's easily heading for being a million seller and has a good shot of being the top-selling single of the year IMO (although obviously anything could happen with 10 months still to go). People don't just forget million sellers, at least not for a very long time. Especially when it's something so different to everything else in the charts at the time.

(We probably won't ever hear from Gotye again, granted - but Somebody That I Used To Know could end up being the highest selling one-hit wonder ever I reckon, only 2 or 3 other million sellers are by one-hit wonders and they only just passed the mark).

Actually, it's funny you say that. Being white, I used to be a bit scared to say the song title, but nobody seems to mind. I guess they don't take offense as it's just a song title. But yeah, it's best to censor it to be on the safe side.

I agree here. I really can't see this song being forgotten, for the most part, even if Gotye himself doesn't have any more hits. The fact that it's so different really. Some other big hits at the moment, like Good Feeling just blend into everything else tbh.

Yes, just because my friends don't know what a song sounds like, it doesn't mean the song isn't well known (none of my friends had heard Starships when i asked them last week), but in the case of Motivation this is true, because it is simply not well known on the whole.

I'm also white and I don't censor the title when I talk about it. It's just a song title. If Jay-Z and Kanye West didn't want people to be calling their song 'Niggas In Paris' then they wouldn't have titled it 'Niggas In Paris'

There is a good possibility that Marcus Collins' Seven Nation Army will out peak the original

It obviously won't rack up the same amount of sales, or be remembered past next month though, so all is not lost.

Yeah, exactly. I can obviously understand people getting angry when people say the word in a mocking or angry context, but if it's in a song title it's silly to get offended imo. Plus, there's hardly any white people in the area where I live anyway, so I clearly can't be racist or I would be having a mental breakdown or something.

I hope 'Love Me' is a proper hit. I have a feeling it'll end up having a chart run like 'Louder' (Parade) last year, though. :( StooShe are pretty amazing live. Check out their harmonies at 2:00. :o

StooShe are in a whole other league to Parade! They have actually exciting and innovative songs and actually have personalities too. They deserve to be huge, glad they're making progress now.
