When those tribute songs went top 40, did Reggie (or whoever presented) play those versions or the actual song? I wasn't listening during those weeks :)

He did play the fakes of 'When Love Takes Over', 'Black And Yellow' and 'We No Speak Americano', but there wasn't an edited version of the fake available for 'T.H.E (The Hardest Ever)' so he just played the original for that.

Like A G6?

I think that charted high on iTunes but wasn't allowed to chart officially. OCC changed their rules in 2011 to let all fakes chart.

Thanks for the bump so it was easier to find this but I was just about to update this :P

Of course the real version of 'We Are Young' has climbed to #1 since I last updated this list, so that has been updated accordingly.

Updated - Can You Blow My's 'Whistle' becomes the fifth fake top 40 hit climbing to #38, while yet another fake song - Precision Tunes' 'Payphone' - enters the top 100 at #83.

I seem to recall there were 'fake' versions of Cha Cha Slide and Crazy Frog available (Pondlife?). Was also gonna mention Macarena and Who the #### is Alice but I see they've been said.
This is why as soon as the video comes out, the song should be released too. That way, the fake will have no chance.

Yes MC Jig did chart with the fake version of Cha Cha Slide which got to No33 in March 2004. Although DJ Casper's version entered at No2 in the same week.

As for Pondlife I don't think that was a fake version more of a tribute to it really. Got to No11 when it was released a couple of weeks after Crazy Frog was released

Updated with Big Hits 2012's version of 'Let Me Love You (Until You Learn To Love Yourself)' at #83 last week (+ updated real peak of 'Bom Bom'). Big Hits 2012 become the first fake 'artist' to make the top 100 twice.
As we can see fake versions are becoming more downloaded and it is beginning to hurt the peak positions of singles too!
I don't think it's starting to hinder the peak positions at all. ALL of this years fakes are all in tribute to songs that have peaked inside the top 3. I think it's only going to continue too. Ne-Yo is going to get a top 2 hit at the very least.
ISTM we should add an extra bit onto the sub-title, namely 'or record company's stubbornness'...

Big Hits 2012 claim two more top 75 hits thanks to Syco forcing Lucy Spraggan to take down her album - think these will be the first charting fakes of songs whose originals didn't make the top 5 somehow, as the originals only made #11 and #135 in their brief period of being available and cared about! They'll presumably be re-released later but by then most of the interest will have died.
Big Hits 2012 might be the band with the most top 75 hits this year.

Well as they only have four in nine months, and Coldplay have eight, I think it's unlikely.

..and what about the 60's? Beatles album tracks were usually rush-covered in soundalike versions (as they were never released as singles) - loads of them charted, like Marmalade's version of Ob La Di Ob La Da, Overlanders "Michelle", which while not exactly soundalike, were still pretty close (but inferior). Or UK versions of American hits, which were usually like cheaper carbon copies, again not quite soundalike, but not really doin anything original with it either in a lot of cases. They just got to the shops first...:)

Marmalade were an established band with two previous top 30 hits before they recorded Ob La Di Ob La Da.

So for the first time since the Lucy Spraggan fakes - and the first time this year - there is a new addition! Well done Loreen Harris :D
