May 9, 201213 yr I love the Ketchup song. Love it or hate it, most of us still know that choreography ala the Macarena!
May 10, 201213 yr Author Top 20, 8 Spice Girls songs. :cheer: Well...........................not quite............. 21. VIVA FOREVER- Spice Girls (624,300) http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/8/80/Viva_Forever.jpg RELEASED: 1998 PEAK POSITION: 1 WKS ON CHART: 13 Pencilled in initially as a double A-Side with “Never Give Up On The Good Times” the single was in trouble before it was released as the release date was pushed back twice during/ and probably because Halliwell left the band. Though the video was always planned to be a stop motion one (fortunately) first week sales of 277k proved that the Spice brand was undiminished by Geri’s departure and the track became the 7th single by the band to cross the platinum threshold. May 10, 201213 yr Author 20. TOO MUCH- Spice Girls (657,300) http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/a/a5/Too_Much_(Spice_Girls_song)_coverart.jpg RELEASED: 1997 PEAK POSITION: 1 WKS ON CHART: 15 Becoming the first act ever to place their first six singles at No 1 the Spice Girls took their second successive Christmas No 1 with this track. With a video homage to various movies and their own movie unleashed on the public, publicity was pretty much at saturation point by the end of 1997 and the single drummed up sales of 470k after just 2 weeks on sale, and became their fourth and final top 10 hit in the states. MAMA/ WHO DO YOU THINK YOU ARE?- Spice Girls (661,000) http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/1/1c/Wdytya-ukcd.jpg RELEASED: 1997 PEAK POSITION: 1 WKS ON CHART: 15 Completing the hat-trick of SP records is this, their forth No 1 and comic relief tie-in double A Side. Prior to its release no act in chart history had managed to get their first four singles to No 1 but the Spice Girls were used to breaking records by this point and 248,000 people bought the single in its first 6 days to be No 1 by a country mile, they also became the second act after Take That (No 52) to pluck four chart toppers from one album and whilst the charity angle can’t be dismissed it’s an impressive achievement given that that parent album had already sold over 2 million copies itself. Whilst at No 1 they were also on top stateside with “Wannabe” making them the first act to be No 1 in both countries simultaneously with different songs since Tiffany in 1988. RlYqSTTQtCs
May 10, 201213 yr extraordinary sales from the spice girls! Do love that they never ever released a cover!!!
May 10, 201213 yr Even though I much prefer 'Viva Forever' to 'Stop', it's interesting to note the massive difference in first week sales between the two songs. Especially considering 'Viva Forever' was released after 'Stop' so it seems more impressive that the track managed to open with double the sales of 'Stop'. I wonder if Geri left Spice Girls because 'Stop' failed to make no. 1, and she considered Spice Girls a flop because of it and didn't want to associate herself with failure. :heehee:
May 10, 201213 yr Author It would be interesting to see the kind of opening "Viva Forever" would have had if Geri (and the associated press coverage of her departure) hadn't left. Th epoint I made in the post for "Stop!" was that although it was up against very strong competition if it had opened with a normal Spice Girls single tally it would probably have beaten "It's Like That" and that there WAS a significant downturn in their popularity in the first half of 98.
May 10, 201213 yr Viva Forever was definitely well-timed I think. As Gezza said, they were in the headlines with the media all speculating why Geri had left for WEEKS on end and everyone's interest in them was briefly back at fever pitch in a "what are they going to do without her?" way; plus it kind of reflected the sombre mood among their fans at the time while also giving a positive message about how the Spice Girls will go on and be there forever (although that was obviously a lie, but it was enough for me to believe at the time ). And it also helped that it was a genuinely amazing song that even the biggest Spice Girls hater had to admit was actually pretty good. I don't think it would have beaten Run-DMC/Jason Nevins if it had been released earlier or whatever personally, though it certainly would have put up a better fight. It's quite amazing how well Viva Forever did as they were also on tour in America throughout July and August (so promotion wasn't as good as usual), and it was also one of only two singles of theirs to be released in the summer, yet it managed to sell more in its first week than Too Much did at Christmas while that was also better promoted, plus had the benefit of the Spiceworld movie tie-in. Even though Too Much sold more after (obviously, since it's one ahead here) it's still interesting. Too Much is an odd one for me. I never get the urge to play it when I'm in the mood for some Spice Girls but I always enjoy it an awful lot when I do. And I absolutely LOVE Geri's part... plus the lovely fade-out with the alternating lyrics. As a song it never seeks to grabs you but instead sort of spins around in this not altogether unmesmerising way which makes it a bit odd as far as Spice Girls singles go, but good stuff. Who Do You Think You Are? is just a great disco number, killer hook if a bit annoying after a while, etc. Plus the alternate comic video with the "fake Spice Girls" (why do they never do things like this anymore?) was a favourite at the time and safely confirmed its status as the best Comic Relief single EVERRR. Mama, on the other hand - awful calculating tie-in to cash in on Mother's Day - and scratch what I said about Stop, THIS is the worst Spice Girls single from their 90s hey-day, though its coupling with WDYTYA? stops it from being the worst release. And I hope the future Spice Girls entries will be as full of facts as that Mama/WDYTYA? entry was, Gezza. Edited May 10, 201213 yr by superbossanova
May 10, 201213 yr And it also helped that it was a genuinely amazing song that even the biggest Spice Girls hater had to admit was actually pretty good. I can verify this! Generally can't stand Spice Girls but 'Viva Forever' is very good. I didn't actually know it was by them until about a year ago or so though
May 10, 201213 yr The only singles of theirs I can take or leave are Mama, Let Love Lead The Way and Headlines (Friendship Never Ends).
May 10, 201213 yr The only singles of theirs I can take or leave are Mama, Let Love Lead The Way and Headlines (Friendship Never Ends). I've grown to love poor ol' Headlines over the years, although obviously it was a completely horrendous comeback single for about ten different reasons. But the vocal layerings in the last half are so heavenly it's just about worth sitting through the non-event of a "song" that comes before that. Add Holler in place of Headlines and I would agree though. And Stop would only get a 6/10 from me but I still like it while it's playing. Edited May 10, 201213 yr by superbossanova

May 10, 201213 yr Spice Girls best ever song Viva Forever only at #21. Still glad it got to #1 officially!
May 10, 201213 yr Fake That was pretty good Huh? Take That have never done the Comic Relief single though? You've completely lost me here.
May 10, 201213 yr The only singles of theirs I can take or leave are Mama, Let Love Lead The Way and Headlines (Friendship Never Ends). Same actually. I love Viva Forever, and is probably only second in the Spicey cannon to Say You'll Be There for me. I believe it has 4 songs from the Spice Girls in the top 10. Why use the rolleyes smiley?
