Not just One Direction, the same happened with Lady Gaga and Lana Del Rey. We recently saw for ourselves Lana Del Rey getting to perform on some of the biggest TV shows in the US before having even released an album!! WTF?!? And the other one, before even her second single became a hit people in the media were saying she's an icon, legendary, etc. It's ridiculous, and quite sad to be honest. But a good record label is able to hype up an artist and make them well-known before their career has really taken off (which makes a lot of the general public feel like they're watching the artist rise to fame, making them feel more attached to the artist).

With One Direction, it seems a little bit more natural at least, since it's been largely their obsessive UK fanbase tweeting about them constantly for the past 18 months which has helped them get known in the US.

YESSS!!! Go Azealia!!!! :cheer:

Great post. Yeah as an avid Twitter user I have seen all that. Same happened over here, they announced a tour, had their own online shop, Nintendo ads long before they had even released a song.

Single version of 'Starships' has been deleted by the looks of things. Which means Emeli is back in the top 10 by default as 'Niggas In Paris' didn't overtake it in time <_< FFS. Anyway, expect the album version to shoot into the top 10 very soon... currently #43.

Top 100 update shortly.

Random question but is there an easter boost?

Maybe a little bit since people are off work/school so have a bit of extra time to download music, leading to a small sales increase? I doubt it's anything major though. Since it's a 4-day weekened this week we might see an extended weekend effect (does that usually happen on bank holidays)?

It's funny that all the songs between #32 and #40 (apart from Mirror) are from the Now album.

And I wonder if people now have to buy the album version of Starships if Nicki's other album tracks will see a boost (since people will be taken to her album's page when they download Starships). I'm annoyed to see Pound the Alarm as the highest song. I think Va Va Voom is a much better song.

I think all three boybands have clear strengths as shown by Glad You Came & What Makes You Beautiful doing so well in the states, but clear weaknesses too, The Wanted & One Direction's other singles and albums underperformed a bit and JLS' cracks are starting to show now that their just pounding out the same old stuff and just thinking about success rather than making a wide appealing single, for this reason unless they can turn it around, it looks like JLS' time is starting to fade and the other two boybands may be ahead atm, but unless they can sustain this new found massive success (in The Wanted's case, the new single sounds like it will), they could meet the same fate.

Wheatus 24 :D :o top 40 again please! highest We Are Young fake is at 23 :( release already!

Well they have been around longer - and usually pop acts start to struggle around album 3/4 time... The Sats for instance seemingly are writing each album off and not bothering to release anything post album release now; so I cant see how on earth they are generating any sort of money for the record company.

However saying that The Wanted's latest single sounds great and they are going into Album 3 (in the UK) and are possibly in their strongest position they've been since ATL

19 tracks from Now! 81 now in the top 100.

I've got 'Starships' still showing up at #3, though Azealia Banks is still at #7 (having overtaken Flo Rida & Sia). Will be a tough call between Banks and Murs now for who claims the #11 spot - Emeli Sande will no doubt hang on to a top 10 placing thanks to Now 81.
Azealia Top 10 only NOW? Why? There was PLENTY of time for her to get Top 10. UK is just too ridiculous sometimes.

Jason Mraz has been climbing quite a bit recently. Hopefully he'll be able to get top 10 on itunes before the weekend.

Azealia  to #6.

Do you think her label deleted the single version of Starships? I think that's a bit silly to be honest. The only reason I think it could be beneficial is if you've got two identical versions of the song sitting at like #13 and #14, in which case deleting one could get the other to rise and get the top 10 effect. But otherwise I think it's just useless. The album version is climbing fast now though.

Hopefully Jason Mraz won't go anywhere near the top 10 :puke:

Great to see Azealia Banks finally in the top 10, I never thought it would happen so well done to her :yahoo:

Just listened to the preview of 212. Why is it in Top 10? :puke: :drama:

Judging from those smilies, I'd say it's because you only listened to the preview. Listen to the whole song and you'll eventually go  when you hear it.

It's the UK. That's why. :D Look how long it took Gotye to become a massive hit here. :D

"imma ruin you c..."

Anthropologically speaking, this usually happens automatically when a song gets a release. Another species only listen to songs that are Top 10 in the iTunes chart! And everybody eventually gets to love them when these songs OFFICIALLY enter the chart.
