With Chris Brown finally hitting the top spot, and the other thread about the Saturdays including some speculation that they may finally make Number one after 12 previous hits, what is the record for a group (I'm including duos as groups here)

For starters, Electric Light Orchestra had 19 hits before their first number 1, which was in conjunction with Olivia Newton-John, while Erasure had 17 hits plus a remix before taking the Abba-Esque EP to the top.

Any others worthy of note?

What's the overall record? Has Chris Brown got that? Turn Up The Music is, according to the chart show thread, his 25th top 75 hit - the list dubiously includes 'Kiss Kiss' twice though. (I make it his 26th or 27th hit depending on which order you place it and 'Strip' which also entered the top 100 last week.)

Elton john had 16 before "don't go breaking my heart". If you count solo records only then that rises to 45

Avril Lavigne is the only other commercial "singles artist" with numerous top tens hit here that hasn't had a #1. I'm sure she's had about seven or eight top tens and no #1's?

Oh, and Alicia Keys hasn't had a #1 here either even though she's got a fair amount of top tens.

EDIT - sorry, forgot it was groups only lol.

I'm sure there must be loads of them - Sash, Salt'n'Pepa, Darts all spring immediately to mind

Yea it's one of the biggest mysteries how he didn't get any solo number ones in the UK until 1990 (Sacrifice) whilst scoring constantly those on Hot 100

Also Bon Jovi: 37 Top 75 hits without number one.

Janet Jackson surely must be one. She's had 16 top 10 hits yet not a single #1.

In regards to groups, The Saturdays are the obvious group. Atomic Kitten had quite a few flops/minor hits before they had their breakthrough with 'Whole Again'.

In terms of groups who actually had major hits before an eventual number one, the Jackson 5 probably had the most hits.

'I Want You Back', 'ABC', 'The Love You Save', 'I'll Be There', 'Lookin' Through the Windows' and 'Doctor My Eyes' were all top 10 hits before the Jacksons (yes, they changed their name to this) finally achieved a number one with 'Show You the Way to Go'. Six top 10 hits before a #1 is pretty good considering The Sats have "only" achieved 10 so far.

Only 12 hits before their number 1. 6 top tens, ELO had 13 top tens.

You're so living in your little girl group world :P

Just been surprised by the fact that Guns'n'Roses have had 12 top 10 hits without getting to number one (but only half a dozen smaller hit)

Little-girl group world?

Surely you're more likely to find Gary Glitter there? :P

I thought this thread about the amount of hits before a no 1? Lots of these acts haven't had one yet- maybe I misunderstood?

No you were right. It's just a little thread-drift, that's all.

Reposting this because no one responded to it the first time :(

Some I checked:

Snoop Dogg: 27

Iron Maiden: 21

The Clash: 21

Eric Clapton: 18

Simple Minds: 16

Sting has 42 Top 75 hits as a solo artist but no number ones (two #2's though). Lil Wayne has 28 (solos and guest appearances)

I did have a feeling Snoop Dogg might hold the record.

Not really. Whole Again was only their 5th single. Prior to that, they'd had 3 top 10s and a top 20.

Doesn't Nicki Minaj have around 25 top 100 appearences (obviously counting features as well)? But only 4 of those are top 10 (Bedrock, Super Bass, Where Dem Girls At and Starships), and she has no number 1s (although Starships could make it in the coming weeks).
