Can anyone think of songs which are deemed to be true classics now(played still on radio/at weddings/in bars/on tv)and everyone knows the words of but never managed to hit the uk top 40.

Heres one to start you all -

10/08/1985 Bryan Adams Summer Of '69 42 57-49-{42}-42-44-60-67->7 :o

At all in the top 75?

Never. And some of his other classics, like Domino and Moondance, didn't make it either. His highest charting single as a solo artist is #20, and even that's a duet with Cliff Richard. If you count songs credited solely to himself, it's #36 (which was in 1999)

Yeah just seen that on Polyhex there, strange...wasnt really a singles artists i suppose. i also think hes a grumpy bast*rd even if he is from the same city as me!! :P
The daddy of them all, Brown Eyed Girl by Van Morrison, DID NOT CHART!

It's only a matter of time before it gets used in an ad, performed on a TV talent show or reduced to 59p on iTunes and this is rectified. Him dying could also cause it to finally chart as morbid as that is.

THIS....A similar thing happened with old classic xmas songs that were never released as singles in the 50s like Let it Snow and Its beginning to look alot like christmas

I can't see it happening to be honest. I've just had a look at a few compilation albums we have in the house that they gave away free with newspapers, and Brown Eyed Girl is on at least 5 of them, and I think it's on quite a few more in our house. I might be wrong, but I think it's one of those songs that everyone already has a copy of.

I agree with bre, as terrible as it sounds but if he passes away Brown Eyed Girl as his most known song will at least go top 75!
'At Last' by Etta James until recently. It still shocks me that her only top 10 hit (or top 30 for that matter) to date is 'I Just Wanna Make Love to You' - which only charted due to an advert at the time. 'I'd Rather Go Blind' didn't go top 100 either.
I'm not sure if it's a "classic", but whenever there is a request show on the radio, Oasis' Shes Electric ALWAYS gets played, and I don't even think it was a single, nevermind reach the charts!

See also "Champagne Supernova", "Cast No Shadow" and "Morning Glory" from the same album.

'Go Your Own Way' by Fleetwood Mac.

I would also add 'Rhiannon'. I don't think it charted at all in the UK. :o

You could say most of the 'Rumours' album, Dreams only got to 24 and Don't Stop 32. Then songs like Songbird, which wasn't even a single!

Rhiannon charted at 46 in the UK btw :P

Ok well it still wasn't a "hit" position. :P

And "The Chain", although that gathered fame well after the release of the album.

I suspect most people who know part of the song don't even know it's by Fleetwood Mac.

Dolly Parton's 9 to 5

I'm sure I've mentioned this song before but it completely blew me away when I learned it never even made top 40. It did get number one in America though.
