April 28, 201213 yr I don't want to say yes, because Call Me Maybe just doesn't sound at all like it should be a million seller!
April 28, 201213 yr I doubt it - despite its fans here, it is gving little indication it has that sort of potential overall sales. um, WAY was on air on sale pretty much, and is increasing in sales at the top end of the chart. Whilst its by no means a definite million seller at this point, I'd say it very much has a good chance of doing so in the long run.
April 28, 201213 yr I also wonder if Titanium could also get there eventually? It is bound to continue selling throughout the year and will likely be used in The Voice, X factor etc at some point as well. It may not do it this year but then it only needs to sell another 10k each week until the end of the year (a tall order but it'll likely sell more than that for the next few months). Titanium is getting used on the Voice tonight, back up next week :D ==== On a separate note Carly's track could linger in the chart till Sept/Oct if someone sings it as an audition piece in X Factor. I think its going to be this year's SLY but on a different level.
April 28, 201213 yr Haven't Chasing Cars and Umbrella sold over 800k by now? They'll get there eventually ^_^ As for CMM, I can see it being a million seller easily. I wouldn't be surprised if Fun. become the Eminem/Maroon 5 of 2012. Edited April 28, 201213 yr by GrAmii
April 28, 201213 yr It already *has* passed 400k - see the narrative for the Friday mids... Oh, I haven't read the updates in the Friday mids thread yet. To remind people: reaching or not reaching a million in sales doesn't make a song any more or less a hit. Michael Jackson has only one million seller and it's Earth Song, not any of his huge classics. Madonna has none. Elvis Presley also only has the one million seller with 'It's Now Or Never'.
April 28, 201213 yr http://www.latestnewsexplorer.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/03/Carly-Rae-Jepsen-Call-Me-Maybe.jpg It would have fit in perfectly in 1997-1999, and could have sold just as well back then as it does now! How long until "CMM" becomes a million seller? By August or September? I think that is a little early timeline wise considering Britney didn't debut until 1998. I would say Carly would fit in the 'nsync-Pop era of bubblegum to the debut of Avril so 2000-2003. When bubblegum pop got a little more interesting and edgy when the scene reacted to Baby One More Time. Before that it was ballads, and teen girl bait like 1D and The Wanted are now.
April 28, 201213 yr When a song managed to hit no. 1 and increase its sales whilst at no. 1, you know there is a genuinely popular song at the top of the charts. Gotye and Carly Rae Jepsen have done exactly that. List of songs that have increased in sales at #1 during the past few years: Enrique Iglesias - Hero R. Kelly - Ignition Blu Cantrell/Sean Paul - Breathe Band Aid 20 - Do They Know It's Christmas? James Blunt - You're Beautiful Gnarls Barkley - Crazy Shakira/Wyclef Jean - Hips Don't Lie Mika - Grace Kelly Rihanna/Jay-Z - Umbrella Sugababes - About You Now Basshunter - Now You're Gone Duffy - Mercy Estelle/Kanye West - American Boy Madonna/Justin Timberlake/Timbaland - 4 Minutes Dizzee Rascal/Calvin Harris/Chrome - Dance Wiv Me Katy Perry - I Kissed a Girl Kings of Leon - Sex on Fire Pink - So What Lady Gaga - Poker Face Tinchy Stryder/N-Dubz - Number 1 Cascada - Evacuate the Dancefloor Owl City - Fireflies Bruno Mars - Just the Way You Are Jessie J/B.o.B - Price Tag Adele - Someone Like You Pitbull/Ne-Yo/Afrojack/Nayer - Give Me Everything Rihanna/Calvin Harris - We Found Love Jessie J - Domino Gotye/Kimbra - Somebody That I Used to Know Carly Rae Jepsen - Call Me Maybe Wow. April 28, 201213 yr Elvis Presley also only has the one million seller with 'It's Now Or Never'. There aren't many acts that can claim more than just a sole million seller and many of the ones that can aren't even the sort of acts you think of when thinking of the super megastars - sure The Beatles are, but then you've only got Boney M., Celine Dion, Frankie Goes To Hollywood, Engelbert Humperdinck, Rihanna, Spice Girls, John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John who also have more million-sellers than Elvis, Madonna and The Rolling Stones.

It happened a LOT in 2008! :o The thing is in 2006-2008, singles sales weren't particularly great and in most cases the increase in sales came from the release of a CD single. So in essence, CD singles were better in 2007 then they are now in 2012, yet because of the massive boom in download sales, physical single sales are practically nothing in comparison. That's the Great British buying public for you. :D Although I wouldn't really include Rihanna into that list purely because her two million sellers have happened in the last 12 months, and singles sales have been so much more healthy since around 2009. It just took the download era four years to get there. Then again, apparently this was the case when cd singles overtook vinyl sales around 1992 hence the extremely poor sales back then, or maybe I'm wrong. :P
April 30, 201213 yr . To me, this and Gotye's 'Somebody That I Used To Know', while mildly pleasant, I have no idea how they're going to be both million-sellers. Ok, yeah, number 1 for a week at a push, but a million?! That puts it up there with Bohemian Rhapsody, Come On Eileen, Wannabe, I Gotta Feeling...all songs I can understand their success, but these?! WTF? :puke2: And it doesn't really put it up there with Bohemian Rhapsody because that passed 2 million a while ago. I like Call Me Maybe and love Somebody that I Used to Know and I'm a grumpy old bast*rd.
April 30, 201213 yr Sorry to disappoint the 'Carly' fans out there but it will be a really sad day for British music taste if this song ends up as a million seller. I've only heard the song once and I really don't see the hype. There's nothing special about the song at all, I don't know how it's managed to do so well. It sounds like something out of High School Musical!
April 30, 201213 yr I like Call Me Maybe and love Somebody that I Used to Know and I'm a grumpy old bast*rd. Hey, that's my job...
April 30, 201213 yr CMM is no worse than Wannabe or Hit Me Baby One More Time and I'd be happy for it to sell a million.
April 30, 201213 yr CMM is no worse than Wannabe or Hit Me Baby One More Time and I'd be happy for it to sell a million. Hitting the nail on the head (less so with "Wannabe" which I've never warmed to), it's a pure pop song that's a guilty pleasure because it's very well written. "Umbrella" would also be here had it been released in a higher sales climate.
April 30, 201213 yr I'm hardly one of your generic BuzzJackians who loons over any female pop track (although I'm not the opposite end of that spectrum either :P) but I love 'Call Me Maybe' and will be very happy to see it pass a million - just as long as it doesn't outsell Gotye/Adele :kink:

It happened a LOT in 2008! :o 2008 had a LOT of good no.1s. Sadly, due to the sales climate only gradually getting better, a lot of those are quite far from a million. Sex On Fire made it though.

April 30, 201213 yr Why the guilt? :o I wouldn't be seen dead (sober, at least) listening to "...Baby One More Time", but I can't help but respect how its intro manages to be so evocative with just four piano notes. It's a truly brilliant pop song even if I've never warmed to Britney's vocal tone in it. Oddly, for now at least I wouldn't mind listening to "Call Me Maybe" quite loudly. For those who were around 18-20 in '99, was it the same with the Britney song?
