It would be great if this could become a sleeper hit for him, I think all he needs is one of them and it would really help him to shift a fair few albums. Fingers crossed he stays top 40.

Only 'The Wolves' was shown tonight but there will be one (maybe two) more on Friday's show... Probably better for the album if he's promoting two songs at once!

Has there ever been a proper sleeper hit that got to #1 in the UK? I can't think I any but there most be some obvious ones. I mean songs such as Just Dance's performance stateside; quite a while around the lower regions of the chart then hit #1 sometime after.

Yeah, in the US they get a lot of those (e.g. Just Dance, Black and Yellow, Rolling in the Deep, Someone Like You, etc.). It tends to be newer artists who don't have a fanbase that get such slow climbs to #1.

We don't really get them here at the moment. Even songs like Somebody That I Used to Know and Give Me Everything only took like 4 weeks to get to #1.

Unless you count album tracks I guess. Like Titanium first charted last summer and was probably top 300 most of the time ever since then.

"Paradise" took 10 weeks, that was earlier this year!

That's still not even THAT long. In the US 10 weeks would be a fairly standard climb to #1 I feel. But the two chart systems are so inherently different and the UK has never been built to aid slow climbing.

Paradise would've taken even longer if the weeks where it was ineligible to chart were counted!

That's not much compared to some of the US chart runs though.

The longest consecutive top 100 cllimb to #1 in UK chart history is Telephone by Lady Gaga, which took 17 weeks.

10 weeks isn't that big a deal in the US really. The US gets ones like these:

Just Dance: 76-87-74-79-80-75-73-67-66-60-59-49-27-21-16-7-5-4-3-3-2-1

Black and Yellow: 100-XX-64-51-43-29-29-25-19-14-11-12-6-8-7-5-3-4-1

Sexy and I Know It: 76-50-25-10-6-4-4-4-3-2-2-2-2-2-2-2-1 - Spent as long at #2 as Moves Like Jagger did in the UK, except it actually got to #1 in the end

Ridin' (Chamillionaire): 88-73-57-36-27-21-17-13-12-4-4-4-3-1

I don't think we'll ever get chart runs like those. Long running songs usually shoot up to their peak really fast and then drop really slowly here.

Professor Green  #31 :D Should go top 40 this week and hopefully will rise from there!

Completely unrelated but I just saw Birdy's 'Skinny Love' is #5 on French iTunes. Get dat international smash?

17. Emeli Sande - My Kind Of Love (Incredible what 59p does)

21. Marina & The Diamonds - Primidonna (Frustrating this is not in the 59p section)

22. Skepta - Make Peace, Not War.

24. Ben Howard - Only Love

31. Professor Green - Remedy

35. Coldplay & Rihanna - Princess Of China

39. Olly Murs - Oh My Goodness

41. Usher - Climax

69. Estelle & Kanye West - American Boy

73. Faith Hill - There You'll Be (Heard this song for the first time)

80. Ben Howard - The Wolves

94. The Dream Team - Payphone (Seems like Maroon 5 have another fit)

Calvin Harris feat Ne-Yo - Let's Go video is out now

What an atrocious video.

What an atrocious video.

To match an atrocious song :D

Well you can't really compare the Hot 100 and UK singles chart. The former includes a lot more than just singles sales.

Including airplay points automatically makes the Hot 100 much slower and would be the case in the UK as well.

But you could compare to the digital songs and singles chart.

it is soooooooo fantastic to see 'only love' so high! i thought ben howard would always be an album artist like damien rice

 24. Only Love - Ben Howard

 80. The Wolves - Ben Howard

The Wolves looking at another return to the top 100 then! And Only Love continuing to climb very nicely.

81. I Don't Want to Be - Gavin DeGraw

What's this doing back? (#38 hit from 2005). I looked this guy up on Wikipedia and am surprised to find out he's not some random country singer as I always thought he was. (Speaking of random country singers, Rascal Flatts are now down to #33 - still not falling fast enough).

-x-

Not to do with iTunes but it just occurred to me that unless it manages to re-peak, 'Silhouettes' is the first song to peak at #26 since James Blunt's 'Stay The Night' 77 weeks earlier! Since Tinchy Stryder's 'Bright Lights' broke a similar duck for #7s a few weeks ago, 'So Good' and 'Live My Life' have both come and (supposedly) peaked at #7 almost straight away. Odd.

Paradise would've taken even longer if the weeks where it was ineligible to chart were counted!

It could easily happen in the UK as well if we had the same system (aka airplay included and early releases).

With airplay, songs would appear far far earlier in the charts, in the lower regions, before making a huge impact. Sometimes songs take ages to top the airplay chart in the UK, so it would translate in the real chart.

I'm not for airplay to be included at all though.

My Kind of Love given the 59p reduction thank god  was looking to fall out of top 40 now top 20! This deserves to do well.

59p is such an incredible strategy, Remedy (Pro Green) probably never would have made top 40, now its #28.

Oh My Goodness  #38 (59p)

Climax  #40 (59p)

Where Have You Been  #5

So surprised Express Yourself (Labrinth) is still at #15...

Primadonna was made 59p to late, should of been the week it was nearly top 10.

Skepta #22 :o

Small Bump - Ed Sheeran #88

Hush Little Baby - Wretch 32 ft Ed Sheeran #44

Princess of China  #32 :D
