Love MMMBop but Eternal are certainly the first 'controversial' non-no.1 in this countdown. Shame it misses out here, but a lot of massive one weekers will I expect.

SPICE GIRLS- SPICE UP YOUR LIFE- NON NUMBER ONE

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/d/d2/Spice_Up_Your_Life.jpg

NEW PEAK POSITION: 2

Angering at least one poster (though he accurately foretold it) here's the Spice Girls, who had the chart been run the way I'm doing it would have seen their No 1 streak broken after 4 releases. "Spice Up Your Life" of course had a very healthy first week sale of 321k back in October 1997 enough for it to debut on this chart at No 2 W/E 18/10/97 on course to top the charts the following week but it lost out by 37k to Elton before losing out to Aqua by just 12k the week after. This was a time of incredible sales HOWEVER it can't be denied that the Spice Girls record suffered a 50% slump in sales in the second week which did open the door for Aqua to pole vault them into pole position. It did spend a month at No 2 though is that consolation? :(

Interesting thread but one quick query. How can you put Hanson at #1 on 31.5.97 and Elton John 13.9.97 when they weren't even out for release in those respective weeks.

Thanks- by virtue of how I'm compiling at as per the first post! :D

With all respect but this thread has a very week point. A number 1 is not a song that will be remembered forever as massive (especially as it's too subjective to state which song is memorable and which one is not) but the one that sold the most copies in a certain period of time. There's nothing like a non-Number 1 in relation to singles that actually did reach the top!

Indeed so, but that is EXACTLY what this thread is- the only difference between what is done here and what is done in "the real world" is the length of that period- namely 7 days sales Vs 21 days sales.

To be honest, considering how much effort it must take to compile this I find it quite rude that people come in here and moan about it. If you disagree with it, don't read the thread. Some of us actually find this interesting.

I wouldn't call "Spice Up Your Life" a non-number 1 at all.

(1-2-3-4-10-20-24-29-34-37-29-37)

That seems like a pretty good run to me. It may not be the best but at least it spent more than 10 weeks in the top 40.

Agreed, it isn't of course, but it got in this thread because of being stuck in between two of the biggest selling songs of all-time, and the fact that Aqua increased sales for two weeks in a row when moving 2-1-1. It seems crazy that a song that sold over 300k in its first week can still end up here but I predicted it on the first page so I can't be too bothered about it, I didn't know Aqua's first week sale but I knew it would be touch-and-go either way.

I think people have an issue with the terminology/title of this thread more than anything, as the term "non-#1" is usually used in a negative way on this forum to describe songs like McFly's later chart toppers. Perhaps it should be changed to something else? Not that I have any suggestions of what to but still. But really this thread is just an alternative chart system.

It's just a thread really to generate discussion over the topic but providing some kind of statistical basis for the concept rather than subjective opinion. Everyone is encouraged to discuss the tracks and give an opinion. With Spice Girls and Eternal they were both long running hits in 1997 and both ended up in the top 20 of the year so for that reason alone they probably wouldn't qualify for the title.

1998 will also, I'm sure, be full of some surprises!! :o

Interesting quirk that Oasis actually got an extra week under this system, considering you'd expect them to be a band who will get a lot of their #1s relegated in future years! :D

And Too Much by the Spice Girls will get to to #1 a week later here, and is now considered a 1998 chart topper for this thread's purpose I think, hence not appearing on this list, and Teletubbies being the Christmas #1 instead.

The Verve and Eternal also relegated under this system, 2 more of my favourite #1s at the time. :(

That said, HUZZAH for Tori Amos and White Town managing to hold their #1 status. I'm really surprised at both, especially the latter gaining a week. :o

Another quirk of this system will be that while in theory it should punish fanbase purchases that drop quickly, those like DYKWIM? will benefit because they had a gigantic first week figure which carries them through for a week or two either side.

Then Drugs Don't Work still doea it for me. Looking forward to 2 Manics' entries later in the thread.

Really interesting thread, as ever.

I guess it just goes to prove how many factors there are in determining a non-#1. In the real charts songs that are worthy of number one status often miss out (see 'Moves like Jagger' and 'Love the way you lie') and the same things happen again here; I would argue that 'Spice up your life' and 'i wanna be thr only one's were not non-#1's.

In that respect perhaps airplay needs to be taken into account for a truer representation! Loving the detail and effort that's gone into this though - it's certainly been hotly debated!

On an almost philosophical level, is any number 1 a non-number 1, if we keep discussing them?!

But on a forum full of people interested in the charts we're surely going to remember and discuss them all?

If you asked 100 BuzzJack chart posters to name as many 2011 number ones as they could I'm sure they'd all be said at least 30+ times (some 100 times), if you asked 100 random members of the public there would be some songs that got very few mentions, if any!

Tori's run went 2-1-2...so I kinda expected her to retain her middle week number.
