MELANIE C- I TURN TO YOU- NON NUMBER ONE

http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_-Zmym6ydtJc/SQXVejWxsrI/AAAAAAAABn0/IkJBKB0j22E/s400/melc.jpg

NEW PEAK POSITION: 3

A bit of a surprise this one, "I Turn To You" was far from a weak link in the endless stream of 7 day wonders back in 2000 and opened with a very respectable 121k of sales in August. It was however surrounded by much bigger debuts, "Rock DJ" "Groovejet" and "Out Of Your Mind" all dwarfed its sales and proved an effective buffer to the top 2 positions that month, thusly demoting Mel C to a mere No 3 despite selling 243k in its first 21 days on sale.

A1- TAKE ON ME- NON NUMBER ONE

NEW PEAK POSITION: 2

With a sales peak that arrived far too late to keep its No 1 position on this thread boy band A1 get stripped of their debut chart topper and A-Ha cover "Take On Me". A hasty retreat down the charts 1-4-13-21 coupled with a debut week sale of 82k (poor for 2000) meant this was always gonna struggle and so it proves.

U2- BEAUTIFUL DAY- NON NUMBER ONE

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/3/35/Beautiful_Day.jpg

NEW PEAK POSITION: 3

Now considered as one of their better peices of work (certainly in the 00s) "Beautiful Day" is perhaps another surprise demotion in this thread. It managed to outpace Robbie & Kylie's "Kids" by 10k in October 2000 to gain a No 1 position in the real world, but sales were quite poor in the month and no single sold more than 80k all month long in any single given week making the charts quite weak enough to enable Westlife & Mariah to grab a third week at the top, one of the factors involved in keeping U2 stuck at No 3.

I Turn to You is such a boring song.

I like A1's version of Take On Me though. I only remembered it all this time because one of them went on Big Brother a few years ago.

U2 and Mel C are quite surprising demotions, indeed.

So I guess that there was another non-demoted #1 for Westlife, besides the three I predicted (Swear It Again, I Have A Dream and Uptown Girl). Curiously enough only one of these wasn't a cover.

"Beautiful Day" is completely wonderful, "Vertigo" will probably lose its status as well because they both only stabilised once they'd left the top 20. In the latter's case it was a relatively massive download seller and must have lost thousands of official sales because of it.

Hooray, Black Coffee keeps its #1 status! I guess it should be thanking its lucky stars that the market crashed so spectacularly at the end of the month to allow Steps a hilariously weak #1 but I still thought the Westlife and U2 combo would beat it, but clearly the latter were even more front-loaded than I thought.

The selections from 2000 have been quite surprising in general. I suppose it was always going to happen with a lot of songs selling on a similar-ish level (hence the high turnover of the year) but it almost seems like this lot could have been picked at random. Surprised at Madison Avenue and Melanie C losing out especially. And I'm even more surprised at how some really poor-selling #1s have clung on.

Have a feeling there's going to be a controversial demotion in the next group... :o And A1 are obviously going to join the Vengaboys in losing BOTH their #1s. And surely there's a rather obvious promotion coming up I would think *woofs*

U2- BEAUTIFUL DAY- NON NUMBER ONE

and there it is, another one of my favourite ever number 1s, made even worse by the fact it meant Against All Odds got another week :( not surprised its been demoted though, its chart run at least initially was appaling, its certainly aged better than that suggests

on the bright side, its nice to see A1 get a rightful demotion and end up not outpeaking the original :D (would that have got to number 1 under this system out of interest or have you not gone that far back? )

I love I Turn To You - when I looked at the number 1s of 2000 to see what I could predict to be demoted, this was definitely not one of them :(

The A-ha version of Take On Me spent all of its weeks at #2 behind the mighty The Power Of Love. I think we can safely say that there's no potential chart system (bar verging on the ridiculous like removing Jennifer Rush completely) that could have put it at #1. :D

STEPS- STOMP- NON NUMBER ONE

NEW PEAK POSITION: 3

Yes as predicted by Superbossanova Steps are the next band to be relegated from the No 1 spot. A woeful sale of 48k (which was the lowest tally since January 2000) was enough to secure it a No 1 spot in real life thanks to most other records collapsing in sales around it rather than this one being particularly popular. A much healthier debut from the Spice Girls the following week coupled with a consistant chart stay by Baha-Men combined to keep this at No 3.

28.10.00 ROBBIE WILLIAMS & KYLIE MINOGUE- KIDS- NEW NUMBER ONE (1 WK)

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/f/f8/Kids2.gif

Yes I bet you all thought it was going to be the Ba-ha men who were promoted in this year but you were wrong- so how exactly has this been promoted? Well in part it was thanks to the collapse in sales of the U2 track which by week three had allowed "Kids" to make up all the ground and more needed to overhaul that track coupled with the week debut of Steps and only 1 week of Spice Girls sales which allowed this track to triumph by only 3k in this week. Who said this thread was predictable?

A1- SAME OLD BRAND NEW YOU- NON NUMBER ONE

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/0/03/Same_Old_Brand_New_You.jpg

NEW PEAK POSITION: 4

Yes stripped for a second time of their No 1 hit, A1 get demoted all the way down to No 4. Not a surprise when you consider that in the real world they triumphed by a little under 500 copies over Westlife, and falling 1-8-17 signified it had less staying power than most in the fast moving charts of the year.

Wow, really didn't expect to see 'Kids' being promoted to #1 status. As Gezza mentioned, I really would've expected Baha Men to get there considering how well that song stayed high up the chart.

Glad that both A1 chart toppers were demoted. Neither were even average pop songs imo, never got the appeal of them until they released 'Caught In The Middle'. The first single by A1 to actually impress me and they split up a few months later. :o

I love I Turn To You - when I looked at the number 1s of 2000 to see what I could predict to be demoted, this was definitely not one of them :(

Same, one of my favourites from 2000. :( Thankfully this wasn't the case in reality!

Oh 'Kids' is quite tolerable, FAR preferable to see that promoted than the vile Baha Men thing. There are some songs that I just cannot understand the appeal of at all and that is definitely one of them.
