Love Run This Town but it was an extremely random #1. It's not even that commercial really in that its sound is a little bit "harsh" compared to most of the usual big rap hits. As much as I like it, it probably only sold on the artists involved and a fairly quiet week so a deserved demotion.

At least it did the deed of keeping Get Sexy off in the 'real world' which I was very grateful to it for at the time.

David Guetta was ON FIRE then wasn't he? When Love Takes Over, I Gotta Feeling and Sexy Chick.

Run This Town's longevity also wasn't helped because of the Kanye West/Taylor Swift incident (which I think happened the week it got to #1, talk about bad timing ). But a reason it might have got #1 in the first place was also since it was Rihanna's "comeback" track. It was the first song she'd done since the massive GGGB album. I remember Galaxy/Capital playing it loads. It's funny how things have changed. They played Run This Town to death, but they've not even played Niggas in Paris once, and hardly touched Talk That Talk...

I liked Get Sexy a lot, but it was a bit of a Boom Boom Pow rip-off.

Oh COME ON NOW.

I'm still not convinced that negative publicity kills sales unless you're Gary Glitter.

Hooray for La Roux - my favourite act of 2009 and great to see them with two number 1s! Shame about 'Never Leave You' as it's equally brilliant, the only Tinchy Stryder track I love (let alone like) but nothing could beat the behemoth of I Gotta Feeling, which for about a year afterwards was utterly unescapable before it died of overplaying around about Summer 2010 :P

'Empire State of Mind' was always the stand-out Jay-Z track for me that year. Run This Town just didn't stick with me at all.

Oh COME ON NOW.

it was a bit though - the instrumental after the chorus sounds exactly like the 'rocking them beats' part of Boom Boom Pow!

Fair play though, most people don't get past the fact that it's a BLATANT rip off of Right Said Fred already. How on Earth did they not see themselves failing with it?

I wouldn't really say it was a rip-off of I'm Too Sexy. If they were trying to rip-off the song, I think they would've hid it better (i.e. not talking about it in interviews, etc.).

Boom Boom Pow and Get Sexy are extremely similar in their instrumentals, if you listen to them:

They both have a "minimal" or "sparse" section at the beginning, and 1:59-2:43 of Boom Boom Pow is basically the same as 2:06 onwards in Get Sexy.

Not to mention in the vocals aswell, Get Sexy basically just replaces "Let the beat rock" from Boom Boom Pow with "Get sexy right now".

Get Sexy wasn't the only song to use those synths after Boom Boom Pow though. All sorts of songs were doing it. Everything from Commander by Kelly Rowland to Party Girl by McFly.

PXIE LOTT- BOYS AND GIRLS- NON NUMBER ONE

NEW PEAK POSITION: 4

Double disaster for Poor Pixie here as she loses both her 2009 chart toppers, this one only made it courtesy of a winning margin of 1,030 copies in September 2009 over "Sexy Chick" an advantage that lasted only 1 week. Then again who can be surprised at a chart run 73-1-6 making a non No 1 hit on this thread?

CHIPMUNK- OOPSY DAISY- NON NUMBER ONE

NEW PEAK POSITION: 2

Not a bad seller in its own right, but it debuted in the charts just a week before Alexandra Burke's "Bad Boys" which denies it the No 1 spot here then Cheryl Cole's debut track meant that a climb to the top was never gonna happen.

JLS- EVERYBODY IN LOVE- NON NUMBER ONE

NEW PEAK POSITION: 2

Just losing out by 6k to the far more persistant "Meet Me Halfway" JLS's string of No 1 hits is cut short on this thread due to the highly competitive pre Xmas period.

Ha at Boys And Girls, it's far from being Pixie's worse, but it really was a bit of a nothing of a #1.

I also suspect that JLS losing Everybody In Love is only the first of many that they'll lose via this thread.

LADY GAGA- BAD ROMANCE- NON NUMBER ONE

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/f/f8/LadyGaGaBadRomance.jpg

NEW PEAK POSITION: 2

Bot wishing to turn into a Buzzjack hate figure but I'm afraid this has to be demoted here. In the preceeding 8 w chart weeks the No 1 single had recorded a six figure sum at the No 1 spot, "Bad Romance" was the song to break that run selling just 72k and was, in statistical way, definitely the weak link. Its January resurgence, when it returned to No 1 in the post Xmas slump, isn't replicated here either with Joe McElderry standing in its way.

Bolded tracks debuted at No 1

Out of interest, what had 'Bad Romance' sold in total up until the week it first climbed to no. 1? :D I'm sure it would've been well over 100k by that point. :D

Also out of those 8 weeks of 100k weekly chart toppers, how many of them has 'Bad Romance' outsold? :D

** takes off rose tinted glasses **

OMG ha!

Not that I don't like Bad Romance, I love it, one of Gaga's best tracks, but I knew it had to be at risk here, although I was thinking it would still beat Joe in January...

I hope Telephone can keep #1 after this, that IS my favourite Gaga song.

ETA: Actually, nah, I'm pretty sure Telephone's safe. A 1-1-2 run is going to be quite unbeatable.

Ha, I knew it! :D

I (like pretty much everyone else here) do love Bad Romance though, it remains one of my favourite #1s of the decade.

Bad Romance losing #1 is hilarious :D Just think, in a parallel universe its up there with high-selling #2s like Love The Way You Lie and Moves Like Jagger!

It's well ahead of many 5 week and 6 week number 1s too.
