Cannonball was released one week before Wherever You Are, so it doesn't have much chance of staying at #1 as it "only" sold 210k first week compared to WYA's 500k+.

Cannonball is certain to go, 210k won't be enough to prevent the whirlwind of shit that came the week after.

 

I'm assuming that JLS actually gained a week here, strange since they've lost three #1s already and "She Makes Me Wanna" is hardly any more remembered than them. Just goes to show how dead summer was that "Swagger Jagger" can hold on.

Even though Bre hates MLJ he must thankful to the Maroon 5 single for keeping Dappy off the top slot on this thread at least. It outsold "Moves Like Jagger" by almost 25k in the week it went to No 1 but that was easily overturned when the frontloaded nature of the Dappy release became evident.

Just 2k seperated this from "Moves Like Jagger" when Sak Noel topped the charts in October 2011, and like Dappy it was an advantage that it lost quickly, and on this thread runs into trouble with the next massive hit of last year "We Found Love" which eases past it here.

Not at all. I really like 'No Regrets'. The only song that held M5 off #1 that I wouldn't have minded much being blocked was 'What Makes You Beautiful' and that's the one that was really far ahead :drama:

'Wishing On A Star' was a disaster on so many levels. The fact Cowell had to rope in both JLS AND One Direction to get the dumb public to buy this showed his desperate measures.

 

Memo to Simon Cowell - Please stop with these X Factor "charity" singles. It worked once in 2008 (because it was the first of its kind and seemed genuine). Lightning never strikes twice. :)

Thank you for running this thread, most of these have been predictable enough but a few surprises along the way as well! Especially pleased to see Florence + The Machine getting a #1 here (very belated comment I realise).

Thank you for taking the time out to do this! Must have taken a while! At least I can put to rest those people who say Cher Lloyd was a "Non-Number 1" :kink: It was an amazing read!

2012 so far might be tough. I'd say the only ones definate to lose are Will I Am, and possibly R.I.P losing it's second week to We Are Young.

Most singles didn't debut at No 1 as you can see from the year lists I posted but it was still possible with a big enough opening week. As for how long they took it depended again on sales though obviously most songs peaked in their third week when their first three weeks were taken consideration. That happened until downloads came in then it all went a bit pear shape! :o

 

Rather than being a way to work out which songs are remembered or not this thread highlights those tracks that were stronger in the field than more flash in the pan hits though again if the sales merited it they kept their No 1 placing. Hence quite big hits that sold a lot and are still heard today are demoted purely because another song was a stronger seller over any given 21 day period.
