Posted May 28, 201213 yr Taken from the STV website. Simon Cowell to take charge of Eurovision? Simon Cowell wants to lead the hunt for a UK entry for 'Eurovision' in the future, and believes it ''will happen'' eventually. Simon Cowell wants to take charge of Britain's entry to the 'Eurovision Song Contest'. The music mogul would like the BBC - who he has been in a war of words with regarding their new talent show 'The Voice' - to ask him to ''sort out'' the song for the UK, and does not believe Engelbert Humperdinck is the best man for the job in Azerbaijan on Saturday (26.05.12). He said: ''I think the BBC should have asked me for once to sort out the song. It wouldn't have been Engelbert Humperdinck, let's just say that. If I was asked, I'd do it properly. It will happen but I'm not going to give too much away.'' Simon's former 'X Factor' stars Jedward are representing Ireland for the second time at the contest this weekend after successfully making it through the first semi-final on Tuesday (22.05.12) alongside the likes of Russia, Romania and Albania. The second semi-final takes place tonight (24.05.12) with countries including Sweden, Norway, The Netherlands, Bulgaria and Malta all hoping for one of 10 spots in the final. The UK, Italy, France, Spain, Germany and hosts Azerbaijan automatically qualify. Copyright © bangshowbiz.com 2012
May 28, 201213 yr I'm all for it!! He can't do any worse than the internal BBC selection and hopefully we would get a 'proper' selection process and several shows - Like him it not hes had HUGE success across Europe with acts over the years
May 28, 201213 yr I wouldn't be against it, but it's not going to happen while the contest is still on BBC. If they withdraw ITV will have the rights to show it, because they are members of the EBU, and they showed Junior Eurovision for the first three years.
May 28, 201213 yr On one hand I wouldn't mind seeing Simon try it as he is very successful in the industry and could do a great job but as much as the BBC don't do a great job of choosing an entry for us, I don't really want the contest moving over to ITV (and the BBC aren't withdrawing any time soon anyway, terrible results or not, it still gets them a lot of viewers).
May 28, 201213 yr Im all for Simon trying this but i would want it to be done through the BBC as i dont want ITV having Eurovision.
May 28, 201213 yr ITV might actually inject some thought into the contest and our entrants though? Regardless of that, the BBC won't be giving it up anytime soon, as they're still getting good figures from it. I'm not sure if Cowell's in a "golden handcuffs" deal with ITV; I presume he is, but if he wasn't, then there'd be nothing technically stopping him from giving it a go. Another idea for the BBC might be to incorporate The Voice UK into the selection process somehow?
May 28, 201213 yr Danny o'fucking Donoghue is the LAST person I want having anything to do with the Eurovision selection process!
May 28, 201213 yr Danny o'fucking Donoghue is the LAST person I want having anything to do with the Eurovision selection process! Could be worse... John Barrowman anyone?!
May 28, 201213 yr Hmm, this is the same Simon Cowell who has inflicked such JOYS as Leon Jackson 'When You Believe', Joe McElderry 'The Climb', X Factor Finalists ft. JLS & One Direction'Wishing On A Star' upon us. As for (allegedly) original "songs", Michelle McMannus 'All This Time' and Shayne Ward 'That's My Goal'. What could Simon Cowell possibly have done to get the UK back on winning form? Seriously?!!! :manson: Englebert WAS easily the better option imo. That said, let the Cowell have his way (he usually does so :P ). Let him take charge of the 2013 Eurovision entry, and we'll see (a) what he comes up with, and (b) how badly the UK fare with his entry.

Another idea for the BBC might be to incorporate The Voice UK into the selection process somehow? The Beeb has been running away from talent shows for years outside of The Voice, which is still sat on the same ratings that were expected before it launched (although the fact it was doing so well earlier on does make it a bit disastrous now). I don't think they'd want to sully the one show they don't regard as toxic.
May 28, 201213 yr In what way would Eurovision sully The Voice? Especially given the critical mauling it's had. I really thought things were going in the right direction with Jade, but it's been downhill ever since (ignoring Blue's dead cat bounce last year).
May 28, 201213 yr The BBC do not know what they are doing - obviously the people in charge of eurovision have been in their job too long and need replacing with people who have a clue about what Europe wants... Eg aileen past it Phillips did crappy staging yet again!
May 28, 201213 yr I'd quite like to see it happen! Hopefully a Cowell-produced show would hopefully push the public in the right direction to think that Eurovision is a proper contest. Plus it won't be someone who has passed their peak in the music industry.
May 28, 201213 yr I agree with Klumzee - the whole concept of Simon being involved in getting an artist would actually make people care about Eurovision, sit up and think it's actually viewed as important. And, to be honest, I think the last few years have shown - having an experienced artist in other countries like Blue/Englebert means nothing, when we've done better with an unknown artist in Jade. Established artists don't mean anything in this song contest, but finding a talented singer from a talent contest Simon may introduce, may mean something. It's just the good song we need, which I'm not entirely confident Simon would get, judging by his winners singles.

I really thought things were going in the right direction with Jade, but it's been downhill ever since (ignoring Blue's dead cat bounce last year). It would be SEEN as sullying it. They want The Voice to compete with The X Factor, and the comparison would be difficult if the winner of one had a Christmas #1 while the winner of the other would get to come 7th in Eurovision.
May 28, 201213 yr It's ALL about the song, it's not a singing or talent contest, it's a song contest first and foremost. Very nice that we've had acts sent the last couple of years that have had former UK #1's, but one was a decade ago and the other was five decades ago. Forget about getting a name from the past, they need a competent singer with a FANTASTIC song, and watch it fly. I wouldn't have a problem with Simon Cowell getting involved for the record.
May 28, 201213 yr A change might do it better, got no problem with Simon in choosing the song, but would he send reject acts from X Factor series... Chico :D
May 28, 201213 yr He wouldn't. This is Simon Cowell who does his best to try to ensure that everything he's involved with is a resounding success. He'd get the right people on board to ensure that we had a Eurovision hit. Now Sweden have equalled our 5 wins, we really need to pull it out of the bag for 2013!
