June 4, 201214 yr Author Midweek Charts: The Voice winner likely to fall short of Top 10 Source: MW 16:15 | Wednesday June 6, 2012 By Paul Williams The Voice UK winner Leanne Mitchell looks set to miss out on a Top 10 debut with her first single Run To You presently the week’s 27th biggest seller. Immediately after she won the BBC One show’s final last Saturday, Island Records digitally issued Mitchell’s version of the Whitney Houston hit. However, at this stage of the week it is a long way short of making the Top 10 and more than 2,000 sales away from the Top 20 having sold 6,527 units up to the end of business on Tuesday, according to the Official Charts Company. The Decca-issued Diamond Jubilee song Sing by Gary Barlow and the Commonwealth Band is heading for number one this weekend (see separate story) having sold nearly 90,000 copies up to the close of play on Tuesday. A new entry at 11 on last Sunday’s chart, it is currently around 64,000 sales ahead of its closest challenger, RCA act Usher’s newly-released Scream. We Are Young by Atlantic/Fueled By Ramen’s Fun featuring Janelle Monae dips 2-3 in the week so far, while Ministry of Sound’s DJ Fresh featuring Dizzee Rascal is new at four with The Power. Having debuted at one last weekend, the Asylum/Black Butter single Feel The Love by Rudimental featuring John Newman is now down to fifth place in the week to date. Interscope/Polydor act Carly Rae Jepsen’s former number one Call Me Maybe drops 5-6, the Parlophone single Princess Of China by Coldplay and Rihanna climbs 13-7 as Rihanna’s Def Jam/Mercury track Where Have You Been falls 6-9, while Island’s Alex Clare slips 7-8 with Too Close and Loreen’s Eurovision-winning Warner Bros cut Euphoria drops 3-10. Outside the Top 10, Interscope/Polydor’s Nelly Furtado returns with Big Hoops (Bigger The Better) new at 12 in the week so far and the Mercury-issued Overload by Dot Rotten and TMS is new at 14. Asylum/Atlantic act Ed Sheeran climbs 58-24 with Small Bump after performing it on the final of The Voice on Sunday, while X Factor finalist Aiden Grimshaw’s first RCA single Is This Love is new at 30, three places ahead of the newly-issued Mercury single All Around The World by Justin Bieber featuring Ludacris. ============================== Midweek Charts: Diamond Jubilee celebrations rally music sales Source: MW 16:15 | Wednesday June 6, 2012 By Paul Williams Gary Barlow and the Commonwealth Band are set to lead both the UK singles and albums charts this weekend as the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations make a huge impact at retail. Barlow’s Decca-issued commemorative track Sing, written with Andrew Lloyd Webber, is on course to climb from 11-1 on the singles countdown having already sold nearly 90,000 copies this week by the close of business on Tuesday, according to the Official Charts Company. The accompanying album, also called Sing, debuted at number one last Sunday and should easily claim a second week at the top this coming Sunday having in the week so far outsold its nearest six challengers combined. The Barlow and Commonwealth Band single and album are accompanied in both markets by a number of releases that are enjoying big surges in sales thanks to the Diamond Jubilee concert that took place in front of Buckingham Palace on Monday evening. Asylum/Atlantic act Ed Sheeran’s + moves 13-2 on midweek artist albums with sales rising 248% week-on-week following his performance at the concert, while the track he played The A Team rebounds 118-41 on singles with sales up 539%. Other tracks making a big impact on the singles market after featuring in the concert include Parlophone act Lady Antebellum’s Need You Now which returns in 26th place after being covered at the event by Gary Barlow and Cheryl Cole, Motown artist Stevie Wonder’s Superstition in 44th place and the Union Square-issued It Must Be Love by Madness who performed the song on the roof of Buckingham Palace. The albums market is also being influenced by the concert with Island/Lava’s Jessie J album Who You Are’s sales more than doubling to lift it 20-9, while Decca act Alfie Boe’s Bring Him Home leaps 159-57 in the week so far and Stevie Wonder’s Motown-issued The Definitive Collection and the Union Square album Total Madness appear in 60th and 61st places respectively. The Diamond Jubilee affect comes in another very busy week for album releases with a dozen brand new titles cropping up in the Top 40 at this stage of the week. They are led in eighth place by the Reprise/Warner Bros-issued Americana by Neil Young & Crazy Horse and a Sony re-issue of Paul Simon’s Graceland in 10th spot, while One Day I’m Going To Soar, the first studio album from who are now known as Dexys since 1985, is 12th. The album has been issued by BMG Rights, which will give the company its biggest hit yet on the countdown. Also on the comeback trail, the Beach Boys are back with their first studio album of new material since 1992. The Capitol/Parlophone-issued That’s Why God Made The Radio crops up as a new entry at 13 on the midweeks, a place ahead of RCA act Alexandra Burke’s brand new album Heartbreak On Hold, while EMI's new Kylie Minogue retrospective The Best Of is new at 16 and B-Unique/Polydor’s Souvenir – The Singles 2004-2012 new at 17. An EP by The Voice runner-up Bo Bruce called Search The Night is new at 19, while an EMI re-issue of David Bowie’s The Rise And Fall Of Ziggy Stardust And The Spiders From Mars is new at 24. Also showing up within the Top 40 are brand new albums from Modular/Island’s Ladyhawke, Columbia’s Patti Smith and Roadrunner’s Delain. Within the Top 10 at this stage of the week RCA’s Paloma Faith drops 2-3 with Fall To Grace, Parlophone’s Mylo Xyloto climbs 11-4, Rumer’s second Atlantic album Boys Don’t Cry slips 3-5 and Virgin act Emeli Sande holds at six with Our Version Of Events as the Bee Gees Reprise/Rhino retrospective Number Ones remains seventh. The Decca-issued Sing, penned by Barlow and Andrew Lloyd Webber, had reached 108,000 weekly sales by the end of business on Wednesday and rose to 122,000 the following day, according to the Official Charts Company. This puts it clearly on course to beat 2011’s biggest weekly total for a single so far, 127,998 achieved by Ministry of Sound release Hot Right Now by DJ Fresh featuring Rita Ora in February. The high sales for Sing, which was a new entry at 11 on last Sunday’s chart, had by yesterday put it more than 75,000 units ahead of nearest challenger, Atlantic act Flo Rida’s newly-issued track Whistle. Atlantic/Fueled By Ramen’s Were Are Young by Fun featuring Janelle Monae is down 2-3 in the week to date, while RCA’s Usher is new at four with Scream as last Sunday’s number one, the Asylum/Black Butter-issued Feel The Love by Rudimental featuring John Newman, drops to five. Just behind it as a new entry in sixth position is Ministry of Sound track The Power by DJ Fresh featuring Dizzee Rascal. The Gary Barlow and Commonwealth Band album, also called Sing, will spend a second week at the top of the artist albums countdown this Sunday having already achieved the highest sales for a number one in 13 weeks and with two days of trading still to go. Up until the end of Thursday it had sold 59,696 copies this week, the most for a number one since Columbia act Bruce Springsteen’s Wrecking Ball clocked up 74,401 during its entire first week in March to debut at number one. Sales of Asylum/Atlantic act Ed Sheeran’s + have almost tripled following his performance at the Diamond Jubilee concert in front of Buckingham Palace on Monday, lifting it 13-2 on midweeks. June 5, 201214 yr I work out 10 potential new entries for the single chart: Usher (1), DJ Fresh and Dizzee (2), Nelly Furtado (3), Dot Rotten (4), Ed Sheeran (5), Leanne Mitchell (6), Aiden Grimshaw (7), Can You Blow My (8), Justin Bieber and Ludacris (9), Flo Rida (10). Even if the fake 'Whistle' is deleted, I still think it's generated enough sales to hold on to a top 40 placing sadly. Aiden Grimshaw and Justin Bieber are possible new entries, Bieber tends to peak early in the week and then drop quite quickly, so I think if he does get in, it'll be at around #37. Similarly, I have no idea whether Aiden can sustain/have generated enough sales to peak any higher than #35 by Sunday - though EP sales are bound to have pushed him into the top 30 on the first update.
