I thought this might interest some of you. Rajar is the main radio audience research company in the UK, measuring both BBC and commercial radio. This is Q2 2006 - published Aug 2006.

RAJAR: Radio 1 overtakes hit40uk

The Radio 1 Chart Show has, for the first time, overtaken commercial radio's Network Chart Show hit40uk in listenership in the battle of the radio Top 40 countdowns.

Commercial radio has reigned ever since the launch of the Pepsi-sponsored network chart show, launched way back in 1993. But RAJAR has today reported that Radio 1 seem to have finally found the winning combination to conquer the Sunday afternoon airwaves with JK and Joel at the helm.

JK and Joel joined Radio 1 in 2004 and took over as presenters of the BBC's Top 40 countdown in March 2005. A new format was introduced, whereby only the Top 20 tracks in the UK charts are fully aired. The former half of the show in this new format was controversially filled with showbiz, competitions and general entertainment. However, soon after the relaunch, downloads were also introduced into the compilation of the countdown for the first time in UK chart history, rejuvenating the interest of the British music consumers back in the charts.

Since the last survey quarter (of a half year analysis period), hit40uk have dropped 113,000 listeners over the age of 4 to 1,858,000 listeners, whereas Radio 1 have climbed by 35,000 to a total of 1,865,000. The gap stands at a mere 8,000 listeners.

The A List artist chart, which was launched in March on commercial radio to complement hit40uk is yet to have been included in the RAJAR survey, but will probably be accounted for the the drop in audience figures for hit40uk, presently hosted by Galaxy 105 DJ, Simon Hirst.

I've personally only ever listened when Scott Mills has done it and they'd certainly keep it up if he or just about ANYONE else but JK & Joel did it  Radio1 is the only chart that counts and I don't see why anyone even bothers listening to Hit40UK myself.
It strikes me as odd that these two are arguably the worst chart show presenters EVER, yet they manage to take over Hit40UK after all this time  There must be something very wrong with Hit40UK then
I actually wonder if people listen to the JK & Joel show to here how bad they are at presenting the chart countdown because in that sense it is more entertaining than having a total professional (like Mark Goodier) hosting?
Hit40UK is a load of rubbish. You have James Blunt #11 once he leaves the top 10 for weeks on end and other trash. As annoying as JK and Joel are they are the real chart I don't know why anyone would listen to Hit40uk.

Yeah! Much better to have a chart where hugely popular and high selling singles like Gnarls Barkley and Nelly Furtado completely disappear out of the Top 10! :)

At least its going in the right direction, now ditch JK & Jerk, and keep Scott Mills, and you have the perfect Top 40 Chart Show, or bring back Mark Goodier.

Why do people listen to an unofficial chart anyway?

I despise JK & Joel, so I watch it on BuzzJack instead!

I agree - even though the official chart rules are stupid, I'd rather listen to a chart based purely on sales than one that is mainly based on airplay (and thus mainly comprises songs that I have heard thousands of times already), is full of adverts, and does not reveal the top 10 until after the official chart show (despite their claims to the contrary).

i listen to radio 1 cos its official and i like the top 40. i can also make fun of jk and joels idiocy and lack of chart knowledge even if i'd rather they weren't there

I agree with this point, but for Hit40 to publish a chart show in which virtually all the 10 to 40 slots are filled with songs which have left the official chart weeks previously seems ludicrous to me.

i dont bother at all, tv is better at that time  and i can get the charts here first in full

There's zero chance of that happening. If JK & Joel are now doing the best its done for over a decade why would they get rid?

Traditionally a lot of people would just listen to the charts on the same radio station they listen to all week, so this may just be a sign that Radio 1 is doing better overall, but I also think that people who really are interested in what's selling want to listen to a chart that is based on what is actually selling!

Well I always listened to both shows but when I started listening to Hit40UK it was in the days when it was still known as the Network Chart and was based entirely on sales albeit covering a slightly different sales week to the Radio 1 show (back in 1986). The airplay element was only introduced in 93 when Neil Fox took over.

Nowadays I don't listen to either - I come online around 7pm and read the charts here!
