July 18, 201214 yr Elton John is number 1 in the Midweek Album Chart and one course to claim his first number 1 album in 20 years. Fantastic!!
July 18, 201214 yr Author Midweek Charts: Elton could be heading back to No 1 Source: MW 16:15 | Wednesday July 18, 2012 By Paul Williams Elton John has taken an early lead in his bid to top the UK artist albums chart for the first time in more than two decades. Good Morning To The Night, his newly-issued Mercury collaboration with Australian duo Pnau, currently heads the market by around 3,500 sales with Paul Simon’s revived Graceland in second place, according to Official Charts Company Data. Elton John last topped the UK albums chart at the end of 1990 with The Very Best Of retrospective, his second chart-topper that year as studio album Sleeping With The Past had led the list for five weeks in July and August. Fellow veteran Simon, meanwhile, will be looking to make history with Graceland becoming only the second album to reach number one on two entirely separate chart runs. The only album to manage this to date is The Rolling Stones’ Exile On Main Street, which first reached the top in 1972 and did so again when re-issued by Universal in 2010. Graceland’s own revival has been helped by a combination of a Sony re-issue and this past week by Simon being the closing headline act at the Hard Rock Calling festival in London’s Hyde Park where he performed the album in full. US rapper Nas could make it two albums in the top five this Sunday for Mercury with his newly-released Life Is Good presently showing up as a new entry at four. It appears definitely on course to become his highest-charting album yet in the UK, beating his current peak of 23 achieved by his last album, 2008’s Untitled. A&M/Octone/Polydor’s Maroon 5 are at the moment around 200 sales ahead of Nas in third place with Overexposed, putting it in the same position it was last Sunday. Asylum/Atlantic’s Ed Sheeran album + climbs 6-5, while two new entries on last Sunday’s chart are heading downwards: Ugly Truth/RCA’s Newton Faulkner release Write It On Your Skin is currently sixth having debuted at one last weekend, while Warner Bros’s Lianne Le Havas debut Is Your Love Big Enough slips 4-7. XL act Adele’s 21 looks like it is heading back into the Top 10 with sales up 19% on the week to move it 11-8 in the midweeks, while Def Jam/Mercury act Frank Ocean’s Channel Orange is ninth, having debuted at two last week just on download sales. Virgin’s Emeli Sande debut Our Version Of Events completes the Top 10 at this stage of the week, dropping 7-10. A Decca Broadway/Polydor revival of the original studio cast version of Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice’s Jesus Christ Superstar appears as a new entry at 22, while Hans Zimmer’s Sony Classical soundtrack to The Dark Knight Rises is new at 34. The midweek singles chart has just one new entry among the Top 10 positions: X Factor 2011 finalist Misha B’s Relentless/RCA debut Home Run in ninth place. The eight tracks above it are exactly the same as those that occupied the top eight on last Sunday’s chart but with their order slightly reshuffled. Florence + The Machine’s Spectrum still leads, having given the Island act a first UK number one single last weekend, and A&M/Octone/Poldyor’s Payphone by Maroon 5 featuring Wiz Khalifa is still at two, although only around 600 sales off the top position. Warner Bros act Stooshe’s Black Heart climbs 5-3 as Interscope/Polydor’s This Is Love by will.i.am featuring Eva Simons drops 3-4 and RCA act Chris Brown’s Don’t Wake Me Up falls 4-5. The Atlantic-issued Whistle by Flo Rida holds at six, Asylum/Black Butter’s Feel The Love by Rudimental featuring John Newman at seven and Parlophone’s Princess Of China by Coldplay & Rihanna at eight. Also keeping its position is Cash Money/Island act Nicki Minaj’s Pound The Alarm in 10th position. There is only one other brand new entry among the Top 40 positions at this stage of the week – AATW/Island’s Wonderful by Angel in 20th place – although tracks by Atlantic’s B.o.B. (featuring Taylor Swift), Parlophone’s Kylie Minogue and Interscope/Polydor’s Far East Movement featuring Cover Drive) have moved into the 40 for the first time. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Wednesday Update Top 40 Only Source: Radio 1/OCC Top 40 Singles 1 Florence + The Machine (600 copies ahead) 2 Maroon 5/Wiz Kahlifa 3 StooShe 4 will.i.am/Eva Simons 5 Chris Brown 6-10 9 Misha B* 11-20 15 Lady Antebellum 19 David Guetta/Lil' Wayne/Chris Brown 20 Angel* 21-30 23 Jay-Z/Kanye West 24 The Wanted 26 B.o.B feat. July 18, 201214 yr And people thought that 2007/8 was dull for the singles chart. Frankly, I've lost all interest.
July 18, 201214 yr Surprised but happy to see Stooshe up to a new peak of #3! I wonder if their album will perform similarly to Cover Drive's.
July 18, 201214 yr I know Kylie will continue to drop but she is higher today than i expected, id hope she could hold top 50 come sunday.
July 18, 201214 yr Great to see Florence + the Machine remaining midweek number one! :cheer: And StooShe at #3! :o Would be great if it could re-peak! Nice to see Kylie still Top 40 on the midweeks, but it seems certain that it will miss the Top 40 come Sunday. :( Amazed that Paul Simon’s Graceland is up to #2! :o Sales must be extremely low! Would be nice if Train could re-enter the Top 10 – they are having a really weird chart run with this album! :P Good to see Paloma Faith and Linkin Park stabilising, and Keane continuing to climb – I presume a new single is getting radio airplay? Ceremonials needs to climb higher!
July 18, 201214 yr Author I know there was a few mistakes trying to juggle a phone call at the same time :magic: eveything's sorted now.
July 18, 201214 yr Ooh! Didn't notice Nas at #4 on the albums, I'll have to check it out since he's done a track with Amy Winehouse, I hear! He was great on Amy's Like Smoke.
July 18, 201214 yr Fellow veteran Simon, meanwhile, will be looking to make history with Graceland becoming only the second album to reach number one on two entirely separate chart runs. The only album to manage this to date is The Rolling Stones’ Exile On Main Street, which first reached the top in 1972 and did so again when re-issued by Universal in 2010. Whats the defintion of seperate chart runs and why doesn't Abba Gold qualify?
July 18, 201214 yr I love how 1D's album just randomly climbs every now and then, it sort of fluctuates around the 20-30 area.
July 18, 201214 yr Whats the defintion of seperate chart runs and why doesn't Abba Gold qualify? ABBA did it on 3 seperate chart runs, and I presume a seperate chart run is after it's fallen out of the charts and then re-entered.
July 18, 201214 yr Whats the defintion of seperate chart runs and why doesn't Abba Gold qualify? It surely *must* do!
July 18, 201214 yr I didn't see that coming for Stooshe! Great for them though, the song gets better with every listen!
July 18, 201214 yr I didn't see that coming for Stooshe! Great for them though, the song gets better with every listen! From what I've heard of it, I'd have to hear it about 1 million times, then. :P
July 18, 201214 yr Ooh! Didn't notice Nas at #4 on the albums, I'll have to check it out since he's done a track with Amy Winehouse, I hear! He was great on Amy's Like Smoke. These low album sales really benefit the albums I like tbh. There's no way Chris Brown, Frank Ocean and Nas would've charted this high if the sales were higher.
July 18, 201214 yr Bit of a rambling commentary as usual :kink: 600 lead for Florence + The Machine after being 50 behind yesterday, not too bad. Maroon 5 are quite a bit behind them on iTunes now even when combined so hopefully they can build up a lead of a few thousand before M5 inevitably re-overtake them on iTunes at the weekend! Stooshe being up to #3 is a bit of a surprise but it makes sense what with their second version doing so well on iTunes - who ever thought they'd peak more than a month after release especially after 'Love Me' bombed down after week 2? :o Yay at Misha still holding onto the top 10 for now although it'll certainly fall out by Sunday. Heard the Angel song for the first time on the R1 chart update earlier, it's very different to what I thought it would be. From the title I was expecting something similar to 'Me Without You' by Loick Essien, but it just sounds like a Labrinth song (although less good, but I still like it). Yay at the climbs for David/Chris/Wayne, Jay-Z/Kanye, The Wanted, Skrillex/Sirah and Rizzle Kicks also, plus a strong debut for B.o.B and Taylor - they're now top 20 on iTunes so hopefully not too far off that officially by the end of the week? And 'Greyhound' back in the top 40 :cheer: A bit surprised to see Gotye not climbing back into the top 15 today (Lady A in there instead <_<) but he is still at #16, could hang on to the top 20 for a few more weeks yet. Like with Newton last week, Elton will probably pretty much hold that 3.5k lead at #1 - it would be nice if we got some actual sales here, because unless Paul Simon is really far ahead of Maroon 5 we're on for another very low selling #1. YES at Nas being #4 at the moment, really hope he can somehow hold onto the top 5 so his position gets announced on the chart show! He should definitely have a top 10 debut in the bag now though which is a massive improvement over his previous peak. 'Cherry Wine' could give him a top 100 singles chart entry as well, although it's unlikely. Adele back in the top 10 again :D Helped a bit by the ITV1 Nation's Favourite #1 thing of course but TBH I think it would have re-entered the top 10 this week anyway even without that. Always good to see Ed back in the top 5 again as well. Expected to see Newton drop lower than #6 at this stage, he could fall a few more by the end of the week but I thought he could rival Marina's drop after the pathetic sales he topped the chart with. Ouch at Frank Ocean being down to #9 but obviously it's still download-only at the moment, it'll be right back near the top next week with the CD out. Train's album has had a pretty weird chart run: 10-29-25-15-22-39-51-53-60-32-25-18-17- and now on the brink of re-entering the top 10. Clearly '50 Ways To Say Goodbye' having some impact there, I wonder if that'll be another 'proper' hit single for them or one like 'She's On Fire' that charts outside the top 40 and ends up being forgotten.
