This was posted in the 01 January 2011 Music Week report:

Sales for 194 positions in the Top 200 were at record highs last week. Although the record for none of the top six positions was broken everything from seventh place down was a record-breaker, with the entire Top 10 selling more than 50,000 copies for the first time. The first record-breaker, Ed Sheeran’s Lego House, sold (as mentioned above) 60,787 copies compared to the previous best number seven sale of 54,479, set by LeAnn Rimes’ Can’t Fight The Moonlight in week 51 of 2000. Rizzle Kicks’ Mama Do The Hump is number 10 this week on sales of 53,189, easily beating the previous top tally of 46,410 set by Robbie Williams’ Supreme, also in week 51 of 2000. It sold more than 10 times as many copies as the century’s smallest selling number 10, Uniting Nations’ Out Of Touch, which held the position in the first week of 2005, on sales of just 5,381.

Rizzle Kicks also occupy the number 40 position this week, with When I Was A Youngster selling 13,891 copies, beating the previous record of 13,157 set by B.o.B’s Magic exactly a year ago. At the Top 40’s weakest point – week 1, 2005 – Britney Spears’ My Prerogative held the anchor position on sales of just 1,092 copies.

The Saturdays’ All Fired Up is number 75 this week, with 7,999 sales, smashing the previous record for that position of 6,492 sales set by Beyonce’s Sweet Dreams in the final week of 2009. And number 200 this week is No Beef by Afrojack, with sales of 2,609, compared to the previous record of 2,139 set by James Blunt’s Stay The Night exactly a year earlier.

I presume that these records are for the 21st Century only, so does anyone know the records for the highest weekly sales for the Top 6 positions? These records can be taken out of the report:

Great to see Afrojack & Steve Aoki's 'No Beef' having a record  of course that's down to being at that position at the start of the year, with iTunes gift cards boosting everything :P Still great to see
I'm pretty sure Elton John's Something About The Way You Look Tonight/Candle In The Wind 1997 sold well over a million copies in one week to be the top weekly #1 sale of all time, with Will Young's Anything Is Possible/Evergreen 2nd on a little over a million?

Edited by Juranamo

Elton did a million twice at #1, Will Young is the only other person to do it. One of Elyon's #1 weeks was >1.5m I think which is the record by far.

Highest for #2 I believe is Wham!'s 'Last Christmas' on >500k.

Highest for #2 I believe is Wham!'s 'Last Christmas' on >500k.

I would think so. This was posted on 20 December 2009 Music Report:

The CD release of McElderry’s single on Wednesday released pent-up demand for physical copies of The Climb, but to no avail, as it finished up 10.31% behind Killing In The Name on sales of 450,838 copies.

It’s probably of little comfort to McElderry that the last record to sell more copies at number two was Wham!’s Last Christmas, which sold around 500,000 copies when runner-up to Band Aid’s Do They Know It’s Christmas in December 1984. However, with The Rage Against The Machine campaign presumably now at an end, McElderry may move to number one next Sunday.

Wham's total that week, much like Band Aid's total is almost certainly a company shipment figure!
I see Rizzle Kicks has sales info for the same week at no40 and 10?!

It did reach the top!

This was written from the week after RAGE was xmas no1 though!

Week-ending 6th March 1999 is a contender for a high-selling #3:

1. Britney Spears - Baby One More Time (231,000)

2. Blur - Tender (176,000)

3. Whitney Houston - It's Not Right But It's Ok (161,000)

And I remember reading the whole top 5 sold over 100k at Christmas 1997?

Thanks! I'll add Whitney Houston as the highest sales for #3, unless anyone can find the sales for Christmas 97?

Highest #3 sale for the 21st Century is probably Shaggy's It Wasn't Me for w/e 24 March 2001 with 145,000, closely followed by Kelly/Ozzy's Changes with 144,800 at Christmas '03.

Weekly sales for Christmas 1998 will probably be contenders - the Top 2 sold 300k+

Steps' Heartbeat/Tragedy sold 105,000 at #4 the w/e 02 Jan 1999 - so definitely a contender for the highest #4 sale.
Steps' Heartbeat/Tragedy sold 105,000 at #4 the w/e 02 Jan 1999 - so definitely a contender for the highest #4 sale.
It also sold in excess of 98,000 the week before when it was at number 6.

In his weekly Music Week chart column the week that 'Tragedy' climbed to number 1 (the chart dated 09/01/99 and which was the last chart of the 1998 chart year) Alan Jones wrote

A fortnight ago it was selling only a quarter as many copies as the Spice Girls and Chef singles but the fast sales slump experienced by these two hits - ironically the massive demand for them at the start of their careers and the subsequent Christmas break have resulted in them being sold out in many shops and speeded their decline - while its own sales held fairly steady, have helped Heartbeat/Tragedy reach pole position. It sold 98,000 copies last week, a shade down on its tally for the two previous weeks. Thus far, it has sold more than 626,000 copies, easily beating the group's previous biggest hit, One For Sorrow, which sold 390,000 copies.

I think it would be safe to guess it sold about 100,000 copies when it was at number 6. At the old Dotmusic chart forum its sales were given as being:

wk 1 #2 67,000

wk 2 #5 68,000 [135,000]

wk 3 #5 (72,000) registered second consecutive sales gain this week

wk4 #8 (56,000) no sales gain registered this week [264,000]

wk5 #8 (70,000) sales gained again this week

wk6 #6 (90,000) Registered highest sales gain of the week [424,000]

wk7 #4 105,000

wk8 #1 98,000 End Of Sales Year Total, 626,000

Figures in brackets were estimated at the time by the person who made the post while the others are those which were printed at the time. The sales for its week at number 6 is too low while its previous week (at number 8) is too high, based on Alan Jones comments for the chart dated 01/01/12. However the year end sales of 626,000 are correct.

Xmas chart for 1998 would possibly have some record breaking sales in the top 10? The top 2, Spice Girls & Chef had huge sales.

Official sales given by MusicWeek the w/c 16 October 2011:

Its runner-up, as last week, is Moves Like Jagger, the Maroon 5/Christina Aguilera collaboration which has now occupied the number two slot for seven straight weeks – a run unmatched since All-4-One’s I Swear was second to Wet Wet Wet’s Love Is All Around for a similar stretch in 1994. Perhaps more impressively, Moves Like Jagger – which spent two weeks at number three before upping its game - has sold upwards of 50,000 copies in each and every one of the nine weeks that have elapsed since its release, including 79,899 last week. It is a sequence unmatched since Steps’ Heartbeat/Tragedy topped the tally for 11 weeks in a row in 1998/9, with sales of 66,567, 68,945, 69,387, 58,671, 60,382, 99,645, 104,780, 98,080, 65,340, 66,617 and 54,071, before dipping (just) below the mark with a sale of 49,604 on its 12th week on the list.

So the highest #6 sale is most likely 99,645 by Steps' Heartbeat/Tragedy. Also, the w/c 1 January 2012, if the #8 that week (Labrinth's Earthquake) was a record for the highest #8 sale, then it must have sold between 60,382 (what Steps sold at #8 at Xmas '98) and 60,787 (what Ed Sheeran sold at #7), UNLESS when Music Week said "everything from seventh place down was a record-breaker", they meant for the 21st century. I hope that made sense! :P

EDIT: I also think that the record for the highest #5 sale of the 21st century is Idols' Happy Xmas (War is Over) with 73,165 copies for the w/e 27 December 2003
