I dislike rereleases/special editions and will never buy an album twice. I will always download the new stuff off itunes. 90% of the time the stuff is not album only. The only releases I even remember doing that for were It Won't Be Soon Before Long by Maroon 5 and Rockferry by Duffy. The only time I couldn't do this when I wanted was when Pink released the Tour Edition of Funhouse. There was one new track on it, album only. 1 track I can obviously live without.

I hope Rebecca Fergusson's rerelease will have all new tracks available.

But it ends up that you're paying like £10 for 7 new songs if you buy the album. I know you can buy the new tracks individually but it would be better (as it's cheaper ) if they had a seperate EP which was like £5 if it was for like 7 or 8 new songs. If it's 3 or 4 new songs the EP should be about £2.

Didn't Coldplay do that with the Viva La Vida album?

Yes they did - EP called Prospekt's March. Coldplay know where it's at

I didn't know of this practise before I found out about Lana's Paradise Edition. I think it's an absolute joke - if she's got 7 new tracks, then why not hold it back a couple of months, write three more songs and release a whole new album? I'd be happy to wait.
Re-releases aren't as bad when the original version of the album flopped, as sometimes a re-release can do wonders for an album - like Caro Emerald's Deleted Scenes from the Cutting Room Floor, which I *think* re-entered at #10 due to a re-release after previously spending one week at #74.
Also pegging Moves Like Jagger on the end really helped Hands All Over recover. Once again, I just needed to download that track. I think rereleasing very successful albums is a bit ridiculous. Why not just wait untill you have enough for an album?

Plus, when they do finally release another album, they have to come up with another *dozen* new songs, rather than just 3-5...

Old record company trick that's become the norm now - re-release an album with a non-album single tacked on and throw in some tat.

What I don't like at the moment is all these 'anniversary editions' of old albums and 'collector's editions' - the recent Blur re-issues were completely pointless I thought.

Depending on the artist I would usually just cherry pick. I bought The Fame Monster though and Ellie Goulding's Bright Lights.

the answer to most of the questions in this thread is money.

But in that case, it'd be much cheaper for record companies to just issue the extra tracks as download-only, rather than incur the extra production/distribution costs of a 'special edition' CD...

What do you suppose the reasons are?

I'd have to go with 'record company bosses are idiots!' :)

The Fame Monster is how special editions should be done. A completely new concept on the original album with a whole host of new songs!
