October 29, 201212 yr I too would like to see ABBA's 'Happy New Year' as the Christmas No.1. They almost made it a Single in December 1980, but, changed their minds, when they realised that 'Super Trouper' would still be in numerous Top 10's. I'd have released it anyhow - there is no harm in an Act having 2 Top 10 Hits, at the same time. (After all, John Lennon was about to have 3 Top 10 Hits at the same time).
November 5, 201212 yr It has now been twenty-two years since a Christmas number 1 had anything remotely to do with Christmas :P And that one was hardly a classic - Cliff Richard's 'Saviour's Day'. (I don't count Band Aid 20 as it's a cover of an 80s track). Well...it's better than the mid-late noughties X Factor domination, but is it now just going to be this every year? 1 (NEW ENTRY): Random charity single of whatever's been in the news this year 2 (Down 1): X Factor winner 3 (NEW ENTRY): Bizarre decades-old novelty track with a massive Facebook campaign attempting to get it to #1 4: (Down 2): Non-festive song from huge name that climbs to #1 in the New Year 5: (Up 10): Fairytale of New York :P I miss the old, actually-exciting battles. Darkness v Mad World in 2003 was brilliant, even though I still wish The Darkness had won...
November 5, 201212 yr I don't see why Band Aid 20 being a cover makes it not count as a Christmas-related Christmas #1? Another actually Christmas related Christmas #1 would be good. Especially an original Christmas song. In fact an original song of any kind would be good. 7/12 of the Christmas #1s since 2000 have been covers (and the other 5 were a novelty track, 2 reality show winner's singles, a 17-year old song and a dull charity single). This year's Christmas #1 will be yet another cover even if the Hillsborough thing doesn't make it.
November 5, 201212 yr There was tlak in the paper of aload of big indie bands coming together to make a cover of Walking in the Air for xmas because ch4 is airing a new version of the 1982 xmas classic cartoon to bring it into the 21st century - ibet in 5 years theyll still be showing the original on xmas day again just like band aid 20 never gets heard now lol. Apparently the editors and kasabian are on board and Noel Gallagher will be asked too!
November 5, 201212 yr Why are people still taking X Factor as a serious threat? the viewing figures have been awful this year, the winners single will surely be under 200k first week, and if Christopher Maloney wins, it could be record low numbers. This hillsborough thing looks like it won't have much problems getting there, I absolutely love that song (Hush Mikey :P ) so I really hope this isn't a melodramatic pile o' shite. This Christmas battle looks like it will be rather boring, but at lleast there doesn't appear to be any Facebook campaigns for 'something different' at the top this year. November 5, 201212 yr If sales of the XF winner are poor this year (under 200k) next year could see the beginning of a return to what things used to be like before 2004/5!
November 5, 201212 yr The Hillsborough song is going to be the Christmas #1. Quote me (cue Theo with his unfunny joke of quoting me when I post the comment).
November 6, 201212 yr That's pretty much the formula for xmas charts now BillyH, although you are forgetting that a certain warbling diva's xmas hit usually sits one place above Fairytale each year. And of course the original version of whatever X Factor happen to be covering is likely to be in the Top 10 too.
November 6, 201212 yr Is XF definitely going to release before Christmas? They should really wait a week to give the charity single a chance. Each gets a turn then.

November 6, 201212 yr You mean like they did last year and are planning to this year? How innovative. Pardon? I don't understand you. They didn't wait a week last year as Little Mix were No.1.

Although it's interesting to see which Xmas No.1s since then have been adopted as "Christmas Classics" - Stay Another Day (Amazing what a few bells at the end of the song can do), 2 Become 1 (Stick a few fur coats on girls) and even Something Stupid (Give each other presents in the video). The last great xmas chart year was 2003 and I'm still sorry the Darkness lost.
November 6, 201212 yr I feel the pain although the songs dont neccessarily have to get to no1 to become classics - Christmas Lights being a great example! It will be played 50 years from now imo and it only made no13 2 years ago! Edited November 6, 201212 yr by steve201
November 6, 201212 yr The Killers 2 years back had a great Christmas single and it baffles me it did not do well, it was a proper Christmas themed song, such a huge shame its unknown too many.
November 6, 201212 yr Sorry that the Hillsborough thing happened but surely there are WAY more important things to raise money for? :manson:

Yeah - Boots - great track it charted in the top 50 (might have been top 40 but they release songs OA/OS so it was released on a wed or something). I love it one of my favs from the past 10 years - love the start with the bit from Its A Wonderful Life!! Edited November 6, 201212 yr by steve201
November 6, 201212 yr Commonsense the X Factor single was released a week early last year, and got to number one, but not the xmas number one, which was the Military Wives charity single. The same will likely happen this year, with x factor winners single at number one the week before the xmas chart and the hillsborough charity single at no 1 for xmas. Of course with such poor ratings and lower sales for last years single the x factor could miss out on no1 altogether this year.

I love it one of my favs from the past 10 years - love the start with the bit from Its A Wonderful Life!! "A Great Big Sled" is the best Killers Christmas single for me, shame it was chart eligible as it did by far the best on downloads (made #11 on that chart I think and got to #4 on iTunes at one stage) and should be regarded as a classic. That and The Darkness' single are the only new ones from the last ten years I regularly play every year now.

Genuinely didn't know who was going to win that one until 7pm on the Sunday... huddled around a small radio at work. :D
