I just can't at some of the remarks in here. If I was on my laptop I'd try a more eloquent rebuttal but for now:

Yes there have been hiccups along the way but he's still built a one billion dollar empire, could be worth much more if he's to be believed.

No-one's mentioned that the lovely Melania Trump will be the new First Lady.

Because we're trading in one of the most educated, well spoken, intelligent, caring and engaging first women of all time, for someone who plagiarises her speeches.

Much like Brexit, the autopsy of what went wrong here is going to be GRIMLY FASCINATING. I think we know that the immediate aftermath is probably going to pin most of the blame on Hillary herself, but clearly her campaign really did think they had those rust belt states in the bag so Dems are going to need to consider where they go in 2020. Neither Georgia or Arizona really came close at all in the end, they would nicely offset Michigan and Wisconsin, but it looks like it;ll be 2024 before they are really in play.
Trump proved time and time again that he was a buffoon during his campaign. He even pleaded people to "GO OUT AND VOTE ON NOVEMBER 18TH" during one of his speeches. I am never going to support a republican candidate, but there's just no way to defend Trump on any level, he simply is not qualified or educated enough for the job, he's a joke. A reality TV villain. America simply didn't didn't have faith in a female president. Any slight misstep from Hillary was studied under a magnifying glass, while Trump gets off free for the most baffling and ridiculous of things.

Exactly. People can clam all they want that the liberals just wanted a female president, no we just want an actual qualified person with morals and compassion to be president, and in this case said person happens to be female...

What particularly concerns me (out of all the horrors that are to come) is that there may be the belief in America now that things like racism is now legitimatised, as people believed here after Brexit with hate crimes rising.

There's a lot of factors at play but I don't think that the FBI reopening the e-mails case like two weeks before the election helped matters. It reinforced the distrust in Hillary which has led to the rise in voting for other candidates, allowing Trump to take the win by 1% in certain states.

What a disastrous result and year. I'm not sure where we go from here.

Well, I think future historians will be looking back at 2016 as a turning point now, if not before. And not favourably.
Yeah I genuinely believe that people believe racism is okay and completely valid now :(.
Welcome to the new dark ages. I can't think of a more fitting leader for it than Donald J Trump.
So the majority of Trump's votes came from white people, bar women with college degrees. That speaks VOLUMES.

Because she literally goes against the beliefs of Trump and his supporters by being an immigrant. Apparently, it's fine to be an immigrant though so long as you're someone's wife because not only are these people racist, they're sexist as well.

Let's not also forget the huge wave of criticism that Hillary STILL gets for standing by Bill Clinton after his affairs but no one says a thing about Melania standing by Trump after he grabs women by the pussy, doesn't care if women are married, proudly launches himself on them and has been widely accused of numerous sexual assault claims. These claims may be false but as people like to say about Clinton's e-mails, there's often no smoke without fire! I mean you only have to look at the fact that he runs the Miss World contests to know that there's something creepy going on.

He skirted around the fact it was a hate crime totally.

Here's a pic of Hillary visiting the Pulse site in Orlando:

An amazing woman even though she was a weak candidate and a true shame she isn't the one in the WH.

So a foreigner is First Lady. Hmmm hypocritical. Latino or Muslim immigrants not welcome, white female models very welcome.

There has been a study showing that if Trump had invested his money in the FTSE stock market when he inherited it and just sat on his fat arse for 25 years, he would now be worth about 10 billion dollars more than he is. His terrible business decisions have made him less rich. The USA can look forward to more of the same.

It's not a shame, it's a f***ing travesty of epic proportions. She ran on probably the most socially democratic platform you could get through America right now. Her policies would have taken a huge step towards the basic standards of every other western nation in terms of access to health care, welfare, paid parental and sick leave.

The "white working class" who went majorly for Trump actually voted against the candidate that would have had the biggest impact on their lives lifting many out of poverty and improving standards of living for them all. f***ing morons.

Ella Henderson would not be for Trump.

I don't think that Hillary was a weak choice, she simply didn't win because she was a woman. Sorry, but I know it sounds "banded about", but she was highly educated and qualified for the role of president. Had she been a man with the same CV, she would have won.

I disagree. This is a lot deeper than simply gender. If it had been Michelle Obama in Hillary's place, she would've won. A lot of this came down to people not being able to trust Hilary. Those 1-2% of people in some key states could have easily been made up by a better candidate. But long term it's about the white man feeling like he's losing out in the new world and is retaliating by smashing society.

don't know how i'm still awake/alive/have the energy to argue this but some of y'all need to stop thinking of racism as like, a set of actions or thoughts or motives on an individual level. actually i just realized i'm way too f***ing tired and dejected to be writing this right now so i'll just leave this here again which is about how all trump supporters are white supremacists but it goes some way in explaining how you don't have to have a fucking post-it note on your head declaiming that whites are god's chosen race to be racist and support racism http://www.theestablishment.co/2016/09/14/...sts-i-meant-it/
You've got a point Burbe. If Michelle can be talked into it, i think Trump can be restricted to a single term and Michelle can assend to the presidency to save us all

I know that it's more complex than just gender, but I think gender comes to play a lot more than you're making out. Michelle Obama is a different case, I don't think we can guarantee that she would have won in any way. Hillary had decades of experience to be president. And I really think if she had been a man she'd have nabbed the presidency, even if some of her actions had rubbed people the wrong way, the world is just generally more forgiving with men, and that's the way it is. Imagine a woman had said anything nearly as outrageous as "I like to grab women by the pussy because I can". Never underestimate the socially ingrained behaviour that people are brought up to see women as less than men. It doesn't apply to everyone, but it does to a lot.

Yes!!!!! This is an excellent article. Exceedingly well written. Everyone should give it a read. Regardless of if you agree with every part of his platform anyone supporting him supported white supremacy and is thus a white supremacist
