Three of this year's #1 hits miss out on a Top 40 place; the wonderful "Lost & Found" by Lianne La Havas, Jamie N Common's "The Preacher" and Blood Diamonds' summer hit "Phone Sex". Lana also makes a second appearance, and the progressive R&B tune from How to Dress Well (And It Was U, #42), which impressed me with its crisp finger-clicking production and excellent vocals

The first of the top 40 batch sees two one-week #1 hits drop out - "Tomorrow" and "Skirts", The Milk's highlight single "Broke Up The Family", the second of two Purity Ring appearances, and recent Xmas No.2 "Another Love"

For some reason "Phone Sex" never massively clicked with me, which is weird considering how obsessed I am with Grimes. Anyway a mini-woo for that. Amazing to see "The Preacher" at #42 - I would love to hear much more from Jamie N Commons! Great also to see the amazing "Fineshrine" and "Tomorrow" finish inside the Top 40. :D

And yes, Too Close did make my End of Year list for 2011 (albeit way too low), i listened to the song quite a lot again this year. Have to admire the fact that even after being played constantly on an advert for months, it STILL sounds great

Your Drums Your Love is so so incredible, great to see it so high on here - M.I.A and Gorillaz are great as always, Haim have a fantastic debut single and even I can't deny that Woodkid has a quality feeling to it.

Starting off the top 20 is one of two (well, three technically) appearances from Grimes, and a vocal-edit of Rustie's brilliant electronic track "Surph"

The Neighbourhood's breezy track "Sweater Weather" was a big summer hit on my chart, the main highlight from their debut EP "I'm Sorry..." - a band to look out for next year. "WOR" was never actually released as a single, it was one that i listened to quite a lot, the main riff is pretty awesome

Another of my big summer hits; Alt-J's "Tessellate" grabbed three weeks at the top back in July. Everything Everything's second multi-week #1 smash of 2012, Kemosabe sees the band with a slightly more accessible sound, without losing the creativity and lyrical oddities that make them so brilliant

Early-year #1 "Pelican", a song that still manages to sound quite fresh even now, is followed by a second appearance from fun. - with their highly energetic anthem "Some Nights"

Loads of great tracks in the Top 20.

Particularly loving "Genesis" of course, as well as "Tessellate", "Kemosabe", "No Love" and "Pelican".

The Top 10 is going to be all kinds of amazing. :D

Feel the Love (feat. John Newman)

Chart Peak: #5

You know I said it's true, I can feel the love, can you feel it too?

One of those times when you just know a song is gonna be big. John Newman's soulful vocal leads into an explosion of euphoric drum & bass, and we also get a rather awesome trumpet solo too. I'm sure i'm not the only one who'll say this; THE SOUND OF SUMMER 2012

Midnight City

Chart Peak: #3

"Waiting in a car, waiting for a ride in the dark"

Yes, it's a 2011 song, I KNOW. But i never fully embraced it until it's chart breakthrough at the start of the year, for whatever reason. Either way, everyone else has probably already told you how great this track is, so i won't really need to

Edited by SevenSeize

Genesis? Feel The Love?! MIDNIGHT CITY?! My second favourite song of all time! That saxophone solo at the end makes me want to die and go to heaven every single time...

Oblivion

Chart Peak: #2

"If someone could break your neck, coming right behind you always coming and you never have a clue"

Despite peaking lower than "Genesis", I felt this song stayed with me longer during the year...SHOULDA BEEN #1 :( Anyway, the catchiness of the song masks some rather twisted lyrics (e.g. the one stated just above the video), most of which are difficult to understand from purely listening. The overall feeling of the music is more than enough though, an odd pop gem if i ever heard one
