I thought I would post it here seeing as I've compiled the list. I'll do 40-21 today, and then the rest tomorrow.

This is my top 40 songs, not all of them were singles but each have a special place in my heart. Also a song which I did not know existed this time 3 days ago is comfortably in my top 10.

So, without further ado...

40. No Doubt - Settle Down

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/4/4e/Settle_Down_No_Doubt_cover_art.png

The eagerly awaited and anticipated comeback of ska veterans No Doubt fell flat on its face when this limped in at #85 back in September, with the parent album also bombing. However, the track is a spicy hot catchy delight laden with hooks left, right and centre. The video is ace, and just HOW does Gwen look so hot at that age? Incredible.

39. Fun. - Some Nights

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/8/8f/Some_Nights-Single.jpg/220px-Some_Nights-Single.jpg

I quite like 'We Are Young', although it doesn't particularly excite me. This however is a BIG improvement for me with its rousing singalong chorus and pounding drum rhythms, sounding very anthemic and like a future classic.

38. Alexandra Burke - Tonight

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/f/f4/Alexandra_Burke_Heartbreak_On_Hold_cover.jpg

For all Heartbreak On Hold's faults, I do like the whole 90s vibe some of the tracks have. This is a highlight which in an ideal world I would have liked to see been released and a success. This collaboration with DJ Smash (no, I have no idea who it is either) packs a punch with its histrionic vocals and updated 90s house sound. A definite floor filler, and Alexanda has one more entry coming up later.

37. Beyoncé - End Of Time

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/4/46/EOTofficialCover.png

Beyoncé for me is very hit and miss, afterall she is responsible for my worst song of all-time in 'Single Ladies'. This however, I bloody LOVED it. It's sod's law that this release flopped in at #39 early this year with no official video. This is a very unique and quite innovative sounding track by Beyoncé's standards, I consider it one of her best and deserved to smash. This was the only song from the 4 era I liked, along with 'I Care'.

36. Ke$ha - Out Alive

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/5/59/Kesha_Warrior.jpeg

Oh Ke$ha, where did it all go so wrong? :( Warrior is an amazing album and my definite favourite of the year. 'Out Alive' is my second favourite track on the album, which means that the $ha has one more entry later. It boggles my mind how this gem is not on the main edition of the album, whoever made that decision is a plank.

35. Swedish House Mafia - Don't You Worry Child

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/0/00/Dont-you-worry-child-swedish-house-mafia.jpg

This was of course recently a massive #1 for them with first week sales of 135k, what a high note for them to end on. I will admit, it did take hearing this on a night out and experiencing it in that environment a few weeks after release for me to properly appreciate this, but what a tune!

34. Madonna - I Fucked Up

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/4/43/Madonna_-_MDNA.jpg

Like the Ke$ha track from earlier, this does not feature on the main edition of MDNA and it is simply baffling. This is a raw and honest ballad about seeking forgiveness for a mistake, when I first heard this it properly hit me because I related to it with a situation I was going through at the time. This to me proved that Madonna still had it, when I had doubted her.

33. Amelia Lily - You Bring Me Joy

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/7/76/YouBringMeJoy.jpeg/220px-YouBringMeJoy.jpeg

I did not follow X-Factor in 2011 so I don't actually really have any idea who this girl is, but based on the two singles so far I am incredibly excited for her album. This was a track I did not appreciate in the weeks leading up to its release, I actually thought it was rather bland but it did creep up on me. It has the Xenomania stamp all over it, sounding like Girls Aloud of the 'Call The Shots'/'The Loving Kind' ilk. This narrowly missed out on #1 for her back in September, and has sold just short of 200,000 copies to date.

32. Katy Perry - Wide Awake

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/4/4f/Katy_Perry_Wide_Awake_Single_Cover.png

Good god, I had no idea the cover art for this single was that hideous. :o Anyway, what an era Teenage Dream has been for our Katy. This beautiful ballad is bloody brilliant lyrically, while I can't stand to listen to the bland 'Part Of Me' any more this will stand the test of time.

31. Angel - Wonderful

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/c/c3/WonderfulAngel.jpg

Randomer Angel had a top 10 hit with this back in August, he seems to be a one hit wonder which is justified as everything else I have heard from him is dreadful. This is a very unique and fresh track, certainly different to anything else I've heard this year. A generally excellent song which combines hip-hop with rocky elements.

30. Adam Lambert - Trespassing

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/a/a0/Trespassing_(album)_cover.jpg

Adam Lambert's second album Trespassing is my second favourite of the year, and this is the title track. This Pharell Williams produced number was touted as being the third single, but I don't think anything happened with that in the end. It is of course as camp as a row of pink fluffy tents, but just too fabulous for words. One mor entry for Mr. Lambert later.

29. Diana Vickers - Music To Make The Boys Cry

http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-O_YpBqHOvPg/TsH7TgZnopI/AAAAAAAAAt8/V91OhQtYcg8/s1600/mtmbcdianavickers.png

This unreleased track from Vicko was uploaded by her at the start of the year, and may or may not be included on her second album which may not ever be released. Alas, I love this new direction for Diana and she's properly explored her 80s electro pop side with this. The lyrics are pretty bizarre, but this is a likeable track with a sweet chorus.

28. Lana Del Rey - Born To Die

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/2/28/Borntodiesingle.png

I'm very glad to see Lana has had such a successful year, she is incredibly talented and the album is solid gold. This gorgeous cut from it, the title track was a #9 hit for her back in January. My friend Grami who is a member here once described this song as "funeral music" to me which I thought was quite hilarious, so whenever I listen to this now I think about that and smile.

27. Labrinth Feat. Emeli Sandé - Beneath Your Beautiful

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/8/8d/Labrinth_Featuring_Emeli_Sande_-_Beneath_Your_Beautiful.jpg

This powerhouse collaboration of two 2012 big names is one of the key examples of an X-Factor performance making a song successful. It's fair to say this empowerment ballad will go down as a future classic.

26. Nicki Minaj - Va Va Voom

http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-JXaXva0GYO0/UIzafiU1fxI/AAAAAAAAHEE/0akrAFz_HIc/s1600/Va%20Va%20Voom.png

I'm not really a Minaj fan, although I suppose I appreciate her more than I used to. This irresistably catchy pop number from her is my second favourite behind 'Moment 4 Life'. The video is of course, like many of her videos, laughable (at best).

25. Conor Maynard - Vegas Girl

http://m2buzz.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/Conor_Maynard_VegasGirl_0612.jpg

This is one of those songs where I have no logical reason for liking it so much, I just do. Released in July, this reached #4 for Conor and had one of the most shocking chart runs for a top 10 single this year. The first 30 seconds of that video will probably be looked back on in shame by him when he's older.

24. The xx - Angels

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/3/3b/AngelsThexx.jpg

Jaw droppingly beautiful track by The xx here, I should probably check out the rest of the album?

23. Alexandra Burke - Let It Go

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/3/39/Alexandra_Burke_-_Let_It_Go_Artwork.jpg

This was one of the most undeserved flops of the year as far as I'm concerned, an absolutely killer single for Alexandra. It even sounds like a smash hit when I listen to it, what is wrong with people?

22. Delta Goodrem - Wish You Were Here

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/b/b2/Delta_Goodrem_-_Wish_You_Were_Here.png

I do love Delta, and she got me back on board with this. 'Wish You Were Here' earns its place on my list due to me having the most emotional connection to a song I have had in a very long time. This tear jerking ballad is a tribute to her best friend who died in a motorcycle accident in 2009.

21. Rihanna - Where Have You Been

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/d/df/Rihanna_-_Where_Have_You_Been.jpg

For me, this is the shining diamond (pun unintended, no seriously) of one of the worst albums I've ever had the misfortune of hearing, aside from the title track and 'We Found Love'. For me, this along with Drake collaboration 'Take Care' are the best things she has done in recent times, when it drops after the chorus it's crazy.

20-1 tomorrow. I know you're excited.

Edited by Silver Rocket

I haven't heard Tonight, but apart from that your 40-31 is absolutely PERFECT!

Also brilliant to see some Lana, Conor and Nicki, but most of all Let it Go. Definitely one of my favourite songs of the year!

Edited by HausofBalls

lovely to see 'music to make the boys cry' make an appearance here, still such a delight to listen to, brings back memories of seeing her back in february. would be a cert for my top 5 if I were doing a top 40 this year.

Here we go, as we move in to the top 20. Coming up just before the top 10 we will have my top 5 least favourite songs of the year.

20. Carly Rae Jepsen - Hurt So Good

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/6/62/Carly_Rae_Jepsen_-_Kiss.jpg

This gem from Carly Rae Jepsen's album Kiss is one of 3 (!) entries in the top 20 for her. This is a total pop gem which reminds me of Pixie Lott's 'All About Tonight' (but better), I really believe this should have been the follow-up to 'Call Me Maybe'. Perhaps she was always destined to be a one hit wonder (technically), but her label have made totally sure they buggered up the campaign for her.

19. Far East Movement Feat. Cover Drive - Turn Up The Love

http://digi10ve.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/09/r3hab.jpg

I am fully aware of how generic this track is, and that it's nothing very special but for some reason I totally adore this. A nice mindless feelgood track which is very catchy, and sounds brilliant on a night out.

18. Madonna - Gang Bang

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/4/43/Madonna_-_MDNA.jpg

The absolute highlight of MDNA for me, the title is a bit misleading as it is not about an orgy at all. This is a nice twisted electro house number where Madonna venemously tells the tale of how she shot her lover in the head and has no regrets. I certainly wouldn't want to get on the wrong side of her.

Best bit: "I'm going straight to hell, and I've got a lot of friends there. And if I see that bitch in hell I'm gonna shoot him in the head again, 'cos I wanna see him die over and over and over"

17. Girls Aloud - Something New

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/e/e6/Girls_Aloud_-_Something_New_Single_Cover.jpg

Initially I was a little bit disappointed with this comeback single, but it really proved to be a grower with its infectious hooks and bold chorus. It's not up there with the best in their discography of course, but it's still fantabulous.

16. Scissor Sisters - Only The Horses

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/5/54/Only_the_Horses.jpg

I went through a period of pretty much despising the Scissor Sisters since they released their second album (barring 'Kiss You Off'), but they won me back over with Night Work and this single was excellent. They teamed up with Calvin Harris with this and whilst it is a bit more 'hit chasing' than most of their stuff, it's still an anthemic track which doesn't completely wash away their personality and has campness in bucket loads.

15. Adam Lambert - Naked Love

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/a/a0/Trespassing_(album)_cover.jpg

Highest entry for Adam Lambert from my second favourite album of the year, I love this track although it's probably the song on the album which is most similar to a lot of current chart dance/pop. Reading between the lines, the lyrics are about having unprotected sex.

14. Paloma Faith - 30 Minute Love Affair

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/4/4e/Paloma_Faith_30MLA.jpg

A stunningly beautiful track in both its original and accoustic form, in '30 Minute Love Affair' Paloma recounts a true story of a man she once met when he was busking and she fell for, she agreed to meet him somewhere another day and he didn't show, she never saw him again. Who knows what happened? Anyway, this is gorgeous and should have got far more attention than it did.

13. Marina And The Diamonds - Primadonna

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/0/08/Marinaprimadonna.jpg

Killer single from Marina, I desperately wanted to see this do well for her and I am glad it turned into a fairly sizeable hit (which annoyingly missed the top 10 by a whisker on two occasions). Chunky electro beats and lyrics which comedically address the self obsessed greedy mindset a lot of society seems to have. I have loved both of her albums for different reasons, hopefully she can get to release lots more music in the future.

12. Nelly Furtado - Big Hoops (Bigger The Better)

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/6/60/Big_Hoops_Bigger_the_Better_cover.jpg

First single from Nelly's eventual follow-up to Loose, after 6 years of pretty much fannying around. his hip-pop jam essentially carried on where she left off with Loose, but still offers something really unique and fresh. In June, this was a #14 hit for Ms Furtado (and did nothing anywhere else in the world), I was hoping this would be her big comeback but I guess she was lucky it even did that well considering I had her pegged on the same level as someone like Anastacia prior to this release.

11. Loreen - Euphoria

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/6/6c/Euphoria-by-loreen.JPG

Shockingly genuinely brilliant Eurovision winning song which actually translated into a decent hit chartwise. This is a joyful europop number which is well produced, and sung with such passion and conviction that I can't help but love it, although it's such a shame about the video. This was the song I heard everywhere I went on holiday Gran Canaria. Every bar, every club, every car stereo.

Let's take a break before we get into the top 10, and showcase the 5 most shocking moments of 2012.

5. Chris Brown - Turn Up The Music

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/5/53/Chris_Brown_-_Turn_Up_the_Music.jpg

An unoriginal clone of all the dance/pop music former urban artists seem to be doing now, this one however genuinely offended me more than the others. Lyrically, it ticks every possible cliché in the book and even drops a cringeworthy reference to LMFAO's 'Sexy And I Know It'. I was disgraced to see this make #1, but nothing surprises me with how brainless the music buying public can be at the best of times.

4. Rihanna - You Da One

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/2/2c/Single_-_You_Da_One.JPG

The only artist to feature a track in both my most loved and most hated list, this is the worst thing I have heard from Rihanna (all album tracks included). This horrible mess deservedly flopped upon release, and if this were anyone else would probably have killed their career.

3. Tulisa Feat. Tyga - Live It Up

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/e/e0/Tulisa-live-it-up.jpg

This is a cheaply produced hip-pop track with no hint of a hook or melody in sight. Lyrically it sounds like it was written by a 7 year old child, unsurprisingly Tulisa followed up a pretty big #1 with a massive flop for 'Live It Up' back in September. Of course, who in their right mind would have bought it anyway?

2. D'banj - Oliver Twist

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/5/5d/OliverTwistsong.jpg

Horrible, tuneless, irritating drivel which Radio 1 raped to death. Joy.

1. Rita Ora - Shine Ya Light

http://i796.photobucket.com/albums/yy241/celebritybug/Pop%20Stars/rita_shine_ya_light.png

I almost find it hard to describe in words how much I despise this woman, I think she is the worst mainstream popstar in many years. 'RIP' was a lame attempt to cash-in on the whole "dubstep" phase, 'How We Do' was third rate 'Last Friday Night' and then we have this, the ultimate horror of horrors. This song to me has not one likeable quality or redeeming feature, it's just that awful. Had it not been performed on X-Factor, it would have got its low top 40 position at best it deserved.

I did not spy Timebomb or Flower here :o or maybe i am a bit blind

You pickedt two of the gems of MDNA  Gang Bang is just so addictive and I Fucked Up is lovely.

Out Alive is a great song too, not bought Warrior but did but this and the title tracks.

Great list :D

10. Emeli Sandé - My Kind Of Love

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/7/71/Emeli_Sande_-_My_Kind_Of_Love.jpg

This has definitely been Emeli's year, and although this got overshadowed by a couple of her other singles it's the definite highlight for me. A stunningly beautiful ballad about unconditional love (which can apply to friendship too), I really wanted this to be her 'Someone Like You'.

9. Swedish House Mafia - Greyhound

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/f/f4/Greyhoundsong.jpg

Super hot instrumental electro house number from the Mafia, this was definitely one of the defining soundtracks of my summer this year.

8. Ke$ha - Supernatural

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/5/59/Kesha_Warrior.jpeg

This is the top entry for Ke$ha, from my favourite album of the year with 'Supernatural'. A bold track with sexy lyric, hypnotic electro elements and sounds like a worldwide smash to me. MUST be the third single!

7. The Veronicas - Lolita

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/4/41/The_Veronicas_Lolita.jpg

I am a massive fan of these girls, and almost 5 years after their second album Hook Me Up came this comeback single in July. It flopped in at #23 in Australia and since then we've not heard a lot about their forever delayed third album. This is an extension of what we saw on Hook Me Up with upbeat pulsating electro pop, dramatic sounding vocals as ever. It's not their best, but it's still so good.

6. Nikki Williams - Kill, Fuck, Marry

This is a song I did not know existed before boxing day, so it's a latecomer to this chart. I think 2013 could be a big year for this lady, a gut wrenching ballad about all consuming obsession, soaring vocals and lyrics so well written (well, Sia was involved). This song I am currently very obsessed with, and it deserves to be a smash in its own right one day (I suspect they would probably change 'fuck' to 'love' or something, to make it more PG).

5. Christina Aguilera - Your Body

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/3/34/Christina_Aguilera_Your_Body_cover_artwork.jpg

Poor Christina. I think this is the second best thing she has ever done behind 'Hurt' now, and it's criminal that this didn't smash but then again I suppose it's to be expected considering radio refuse to play anything of hers now and she has been chart poison for many years now ('Moves Like Jagger' excepted). Killer chorus, hooks aplenty, vocals packed with attitude and sassiness. For me this was perfect.

4. Owl City + Carly Rae Jepsen - Good Time

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/e/e7/GoodTimeOwlCityandCarlyRaeJepsen.jpg

This was a surprising one for me, on paper this collaboration sounded like a total disaster but this definitely became one of my summer anthems. Nothing groundbreaking or innovative, but the simplicity of it works like magic.

3. Carly Rae Jepsen - Call Me Maybe

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/1/14/Carly_Rae_Jepsen_-_Call_Me_Maybe.jpg

We all know this by now, it needs no introduction. It soundtracked the first half of the year for me and I still adore it.

2. Kylie Minogue - Timebomb

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/e/ef/Time_Bomb_-_Single_cover.jpg

This treat from the goddess that is Kylie as part of the K25 celebrations was even better than I expected. I felt such an incredible rush of energy when I first heard this, it's modern and sexy electro pop but not generic, it has Kylie's stamp on it. The chorus is infectious and it's all just such a lovely package, the video filmed mostly in Soho and across London is iconic!

1. David Guetta Feat. Sia - Titanium

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/1/1d/Titaniumsong.jpg

I suppose this is technically a 2011 song, as I considered it the 3rd best track of that year. However, it's had enough of an impact this year that I have no reservations about including it. I bought this as soon as I heard it, the week it was released to iTunes and it's still amazing. The outstanding vocals by Sia, the way it totally knocks you for six when it kicks in, pure excellence. I was thrilled to see this become so massive, I wasn't so sure it would be and it could be on its way to becoming a million seller very soon.
