It's that time of year once again and so it's time for the countdown of the points chart top 200 of 2012 *.*

In case you're not familiar with this, it's a countdown of the top 200 singles of 2012 according to a simple points system based on the weekly UK Singles Chart Top 100s as compiled by the Official Charts Company. The period covered is 53 chart weeks, from week ending 7 Jan 2012 (Coldplay 'Paradise' at #1) to week ending 5 Jan 2013 (James Arthur 'Impossible' in its second week at #1, the last chart to be announced). In every week, 100 points have been attributed to the #1, 99 points to the #2, 98 to the #3 and so on down to 1 point to the #100.

The songs here are ranked based on their cumulative tally of points across all 53 weeks, with ties broken by peak position in 2012 and then by weeks in the top 100 in 2012 (then finally alphabetically by artist then song, but this only applies to the very lower reaches of the chart).

The chart will be presented by myself and Jáhq as it was last year. Going for a record time here (anything less than 5 months would achieve that )!

In total 856 different songs made the top 100 during the year, up on the 809 from 2011. There are fewer songs over 1,000 (79) and 2,000 (18) points than in 2011 (84 and 19 respectively), but the biggest hits of the year have done better this year with 3 songs clearing 3,000 points compared to 2 last year and the #1 getting more than the 3,541 Adele accrued with 'Someone Like You' to top the 2011 list.

A fairly subpar selection of songs to begin with. 2011 X Factor runner-up Marcus Collins' dull reworking of The White Stripes' classic 'Seven Nation Army' brings up the rear of the top 200. American rap quartet Far East Movement teamed up with Canadian superstar Justin Bieber for the surprisingly good 'Live My Life' which is at #199, but oddly their collaboration with the far less bankable Cover Drive is higher on this countdown. Jessie J's super-strained ear assault 'Who You Are' ranks top 200 for a second year in a row at #198. Capital FM faves Lawson's highest peaking single 'Taking Over Me' is the lowest of their appearances here at #197 and finally Dappy's 'Good Intentions', confusingly taken from the album 'Bad Intentions', is at #196. It's higher than fellow N-Dub flop 'Live It Up' (Tulisa feat. Tyga) which is only 264th, while Fazer is casually rotting at just number 344 with 'Killer'.

I still remember the 2010 chart! How long did that take?

A terrible selection of songs if you were to remove the boybands. First up is McFly with the single released from their new greatest hits collection, "Memory Lane: The Best Of". American DJ/producer Skrillex is at #194 with "Breakn' A Sweat", taken from his EP "Bangarang". Thankfully the much better title track is a lot higher up on this countdown. Dappy's 2nd solo single, featuring Queen member Brian May, had a deservedly dismal chart-run after going top 2 - the follow-up, which was in the section just gone, ended up being a lot better. JLS' third single from third album "Jukebox" ended up being their first single to miss the top 15 - what they'd give to go top 40 with a post-album single now. This is personally my favourite single from the group. To end the section we have rapper Tyga who only just squeezed into the top 40 with dreadful "Rack City" - one of my least favourite songs of the year.

NO BABY NO.

I would tell you to DIE but I can't even do that any more. :(

Rack City is one of those songs that's so awful that it turns into a novelty, which is why I kinda like it

Mariah Carey's awful Christmas song just missed out on the top 200 last year, but has no such difficulty this year as it soars to #190, probably helped by having one extra chart week thanks to those pesky dates being more in her favour. The Pogues, still to come, have also significantly improved on their performance last year. Lawson's chart peaks prove to be completely topsy-turvy as it turns out their lowest peaker is highest on here and vice versa, middle peaking 'When She Was Mine' is placed between the two at #189. Girls Aloud's Children In Need track 'Something New' is at #188, chasing the heels of the undeniably far more relevant girlgroup Military Wives who are at #187 with 2011 Christmas #1 'Wherever You Are' (with a little help from Gareth Malone). Simple Plan apparently still exist in 2012 and their unexpected collaboration with fellow supposed has-been Sean Paul, 'Summer Paradise', became their biggest hit to date and is #186 here.

#185 is "Only Love" by Ben Howard, taken from his album "Every Kingdom", which just scraped a top 40 placing. This song isn't too bad but I just can't get into his music at all, I find it all pretty dull. Next up is "Language", a dance track from DJ/producer Porter Robinson, which happens to be Bray's favourite song of the year and I don't hate it either. "Not Giving In", the follow-up to Rudimental's massive #1 summer smash "Feel The Lover", is at #183, with additional vocals from Alex Clare who also has another track much higher up. One of my favourite songs of the year finishes quite low here after only being released recently. "Die Young" is taken from Ke$ha's #66 smash album "Warrior". :( She's followed by fellow flops, Stooshe, who were doing alright until they released TLC cover "Waterfalls" (#346 based on the points system). I hated "Love Me" at first but it clicked a few weeks after the release of "Black Heart" and the uncensored version is even better. Quite the sl*t-pop anthem.

One of the most *.* collaborations of all time, Swedish House Mafia and Knife Party (aka the dubstep-flavoured remnants of post-split Pendulum), produced a predictably incredible song in 'Antidote' which didn't quite become the first SHM #1, though they managed it later in the year. 'Antidote' is at #180 here. Ed Sheeran comes in at #179 with 'Give Me Love' which outpeaked previous single 'Small Bump' despite being released a full year after Ed's album '+', he's got the X Factor to thank for that. One of Rihanna's billion singles is at #178, the title track of the album 'Talk That Talk' which she's already moved on from, featuring Jay-Z who has an enthralling rap about urine. Rihanna has the joint most entries of anyone in the top 200 (7, the same as Emeli Sandé), a fact which shouldn't really surprise anyone by this point. One of the year's most forgettable top 10 hits in the form of 'Level Up' by Sway is at #177. Finally, Alexandra Burke's 'Elephant' featuring Colombian DJ Erick Morillo, her last 'hit' before plunging to new depths never before seen in music, is at #176. 'Let It Go' is #415 in case you're wondering.

Here we have the 4th single from Jason's second album, "Future History", and it was actually the best out of those singles so massive shame at the lack of any real success. Will Jason be 'big' again? I have a feeling he'll be forgotten now if he isn't already. "Mr. Brightside", already a classic from The Killers, performs better than single "Runaways" (#260 with a #18 peak), getting an extra 10 weeks in the top 100 without going top 40 this year. British producer Redlight is at #173 with a song I didn't realise had done quite so well - personally I hate it, a lot. The Pogues continue to slay all these years later with the best Christmas classic around, having made it to #12 this year and being the only Christmas song to remain top 40 in the last chart of the year, revealed yesterday. Then we have Brighton duo Rizzle Kicks, another song I'm not all that keen on and I'm surprised at how well it has stuck around, having been released last year where it peaked at #8. They can do much better, including poor "Travellers Chant" which is at #314.

Following two big #1s both opening with over 125,000 sales, most expected DJ Fresh's 'The Power' to continue that especially as the featured guest of choice, this time Dizzee Rascal, was a much bigger name than Sian Evans and a pre-fame Rita Ora. However, it severely underperformed and is only #170 here. David Guetta is at #169 with 'I Can Only Imagine', the 6th single to be taken from his seemingly endless 'Nothing But The Beat' era, his guest artists of choice this time being Chris Brown and Lil Wayne. Sub Focus' most successful single to date, the brilliant 'Tidal Wave' feat. Alpines, is at #168. Emeli Sandé puts in her first appearance of 7 at #167, with 'Heaven'; this was released as her first single in 2011 before she became super massive. It's also by far the best thing she's ever done. The fame corrupted her clearly. Finally, Taio Cruz got one of the first top 3 hits of the year with 'Troublemaker' but despite 3 weeks in the top 10 it was one of the shortest lived ones of the year and can only make #166.

Here we have a song that is in no way "simply amazing" and I have no idea how it did quite this well, Trey Songz isn't exactly a big name in the UK and I find the song to be extremely generic and dull, his vocals during the chorus actually hurt my ears. The best song of the section is Labrinth's "Last Time", taken from the album "Electronic Earth". It wasn't as big a success as either "Earthquake" or "Beneath Your Beautiful", both of which are better, but I think it's a whole lot better than the couple of singles that immediately followed, plus it comes with a fantastic video. Next are Capital faves Lawson with "Standing In The Dark", taken from the debut album "Chapman Square", and they've never hit me in quite a way that fellow boybands The Wanted and One Direction have but this song isn't completely awful. Then we have the biggest success story to come from The Voice UK, "Ordinary People" by John Legend which shot into the top 5 after being performed during the audition stages by someone that we've already forgotten. Mr. Worldwide closes us off her and WHAT IS WRONG WITH THE PUBLIC, why do Pitbull's worst songs do alright (although this isn't quite his worst single of last year) whilst his best flop hard. Sexism against Shakira clearly.

At #160 is Usher's gorgeous Diplo-produced 'Climax', up there with my favourite songs of 2012 but it sadly tailed off very quickly after a decent start and although the follow-up single 'Scream', a return to generic pop/dance, peaked lower, it is still to come on this countdown. Alicia Keys is at #159 with a song which I don't really understand, I've read that it's something about a girl being on fire but I don't really get that from the rather subtle lyrics. BuzzIndie fave of 2011 'Midnight City' by M83 is up next, becoming a minor hit thanks to its use on an advert; I've never understood the massive love for it but I'm in a big minority on that matter. Finally (subtle shade) we have DJ Fresh who, having run out of songs to release from his 'Nextlevelism' album, re-released 'Gold Dust' (feat. Ce'Cile) from previous album 'Kryptonite' under the guise of a Shy FX re-edit. However, the 'Kryptonite' version has proved, rightfully, to still be superior and has remained a stronger seller than the poor floppy Shy FX version, which I've linked to above as a consolation prize.

Quietly ignoring Rita Ora's existance. :P You do seem to be going at a significantly quicker pace than the last couple of years though, so I'll forgive you!

The second single from Little Mix's debut album, also titled "DNA", appears to take some inspiration from Katy Perry's "E.T" but despite it being a great track, it tailed off rather quickly and first single "Wings" is a lot higher. "Madness", taken from "The 2nd Law", is a rather different track for band Muse and ended up doing fairly well for what it is, managing to peak at #25 quite a way into it's chart run. Elbow's "One Day Like This" ended up re-peaking last year due to the Olympics closing ceremony and very deserved too, a great track so I'm pleased to see it now with a top 5 peak. The awful "Get Out My Head" by Redlight is at #152 - that's all you need to know so we'll move on swiftly. "The Man Who Can't Be Moved", a beautiful single from Irish band The Script's debut album, managed to go top 20 again for a couple of weeks last year following on from the original #2 peak thanks to flop singing contest The Voice UK and lead singer Danny's role as a judge.

Loving The SCRIPT but calling Get Out My Head an awful track?! Oh Jacky Jack.

That beat. So glad it managed to beat Lost In Your Love on this thing (not quite as good although still SUPA amazing).
