I’ve felt for a long time her core fanbase has been slowly diminishing - yes she’s the Queen of Pop, her streaming figures show what a legacy artist she is with her back catalogue etc., but each album seems to have lost her fans that are still looking for classic Madonna rather than vocorder/Madame X Madonna so some simply have no interest in anything new she’s offering.

 

Obviously if this takes off it could bring some lapsed fans/listeners back into the fold?

And yeah it makes me sad to see the lack of interest, I understand it’s kind of her own fault this past decade but she still has moments of greatness. She might be about to score another top 10 in her fifth consecutive decade in the US, I just thought the reaction would be a bit stronger

I think those awful remixes last year did a lot of damage too, this should really be an easy iTunes #1 for at least the first day. Obviously it’s doing well on streaming but Madonna sadly isn’t exactly the one driving those figures! I’m sure Vulgar will do better on sales due to her heavily promoting it on socials but Popular is the real chance at a hit we’ve been waiting for since MDNA and it’s just… crickets from Madonna fans

I don't know - I think her part in this song is far too small to bring back lapsed fans, otherwise I feel like it would be an easy #1 on iTunes for her since it would be largely a 35+ audience. Abel obviously mostly appeals to a streaming audience, but those won't necessarily download his songs.
