07. TRASH (1996) - 73 POINTS

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/f/f5/Trash96.jpg

PEAK POSITION: 3

WKS ON CHART:

RUN: {3}-13-22-36-49-67

HIGHEST VOTE: 10 (X3)

LOWEST VOTE: 6

Personal opinion: Quite literally the song that made me revisit the group in the summer of 96- simply great. It probably appealed to my pop sympathies given it is probably their most obvious song directly at the "pop" market and the most instantly accessible.

"Trash" is the first single from the album Coming Up by Suede, released on July 29, 1996, on Nude Records. It is the first single on which all the songs were written without guitarist Bernard Butler, since Richard Oakes had taken his place. The single is tied with "Stay Together" as the band's highest charting at number three. The song signified a dramatic change in the band's sound, as they went from gloomy and theatrical to glam-induced pop

The single version of "Trash" charted at #3 on the UK Singles Chart in 1996.[2] The song was the band's first overseas number one, hitting the top of the charts in Finland. The song proved to be a successful comeback single for Suede, receiving universal praise from critics. Melody Maker had proclaimed the song "single of the week" a fortnight prior to release.[4] Ted Kessler of NME said: "So the scaremongers were wrong. Brett Anderson is the creative force behind Suede. Here's the proof: this week sees the release of their first post-Bernard Butler single and nobody can really admit that they thought it would sound half as good as it does"

All 6 tracks left were all given an 11 by at least 1 voter (and in two instances by two voters)- two more tomorrow...

This?

No... I don't think it actually exists! The bit at 6:57 should go on for ages after the build up but it just lasts about 20 seconds before going back to the lovely outro. I want more!

I still remember when I heard this first. I was devastated. Where was my Suede gone? It took me years to like this track. The b-sides were substandard too - I really hoped it was a blip. I was wrong. I'm surprised that The Beautiful Ones has beated it in this chart - I do prefer TBO.

I do enjoy Trash now but it took such a long time.

I do love it of course, but controversially I'd say it's my least favourite single from Coming Up.

Trash means a lot to me but by far the best Coming Up single for me is Beautiful Ones.

Me too. BO is sheer class.

06. THE DROWNERS (1992)- 78 POINTS

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/d/dc/The_drowners.jpg

PEAK POSITION:

WKS ON CHART: 2

RUN: {49}-69

HIGHEST VOTE: 11 (X2 Grebo, Suedehead)

LOWEST VOTE: 6

Personal opinion: I was only vaguely aware of this at the time (my best mate was very into indie at the time) but it's grown in my affections over the years.

"The Drowners" is the debut single by Suede, released on 11 May 1992 on Nude Records. It charted at number 49 on the UK singles chart. Though not a hit at first, it amassed airplay over time and has become one of the band's definitive singles. It garnered much acclaim from New Musical Express and Melody Maker in 1992, and for its b-sides. "My Insatiable One", a b-side from the single, was notably covered by rock star Morrissey during his 1992 tour. The title track featured two videos, one in rotation in the UK and the other in America. The song was covered in concert by the Manic Street Preachers with Bernard Butler guesting - a recording was released as a b-side to the Manics' "She Is Suffering" single in late 1994.

05. STAY TOGETHER (1994)- 79 POINTS

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/6/60/Stay_together_song.jpg

PEAK POSITION: 3

WKS ON CHART: 6

RUN: {3}-10-20-40-54-75

HIGHEST VOTE: 11 (X2 Jester, Brett Butler)

LOWEST VOTE: 4

Personal opinion: the appeal of this song eluded me at the time and to an extent it still does now. I know I SHOULD love it but I just can't APOLZ an all that!

"Stay Together" is a non-album single by Suede, released on 14 February 1994 on Nude Records. It is the last single released while guitarist Bernard Butler was in the band, though subsequent singles from Dog Man Star feature his music. Oddly enough, although lead singer Brett Anderson considers the single and the video that accompanies it the worst the band has released, it is tied with "Trash" as the highest charting single the band has released at number three.

It is well known that the song has been "disowned by the band", perhaps because it reminded them of the problems within the band at the time. On the single Anderson says, "I don't think the fuss about Stay Together was justified, I think that was just hype," He shrugs. "I just find it a bit bombastic. I don't think the lyrics are that good either. It's okay, you know, it's okay. I think the b-sides are much better". However publicist Phill Savage suggests that Anderson "can't believe he wrote it about that girl, Anick" (Brett's girlfriend at the time), which is why he has no feelings for it. Anderson has described "Stay Together" as one of the few points in the band's career where hype dictated its success.

Jack Rabid of Allmusic described the chorus of "Stay Together" as the weakest of their singles up until that point. Though, he went on to say that a "dramatic bridge punctuated by uncharacteristic background touches in the form of horns and cello make 'Stay Together' another fine outing." Spin wrote "The 'Stay Together' EP found the group still inhabiting that beautiful-loser persona with a title track that embraced the romance of joint suicide." In the book The Last Party, John Harris wrote: "If its opulent packaging - like a double album, its vinyl version came in a gatefold sleeve - seemed designed to confirm that the group had left their indie peer group behind, the music it contained made the point explicit

"

Well, at least the best song is top 5 in this. The only remaining song left that I really like is BO now.

I'm surprised this has finished higher than The Drowners :o I would also agree with Brett that the b-sides (My Dark Star and The Liv ing Dead) are better songs.

My decision to give the 11 points to The Drowners is based partly on sentiment. It was one of the stand-out songs when I first saw them live a couple months before it was released. My Insatiable One was another. That's what made me fall in love with the band so it will always have a special place in my heart

The chorus of Stay Together might not be their strongest but the verses are fantastic. Plus the extended version is genius. It's still a great achievement in my opinion and I love it.

04. THE WILD ONES (1994)- 80 POINTS

PEAK POSITION: 18

WKS ON CHART: 4

RUN:{18}-42-60-74

HIGHEST VOTE: 11 (*Dandy) 10 x2

LOWEST VOTE: 6

Personal opinion: I've just realised that this is another drawn score so this gets fourth place due to getting less 10s. Best Single from "Dog Man Star"? well not in my book but clearly you disagreed- still it's great so I'm not going to complain.

"The Wild Ones" is the second single from the album Dog Man Star by Suede, released on 14 November 1994 on Nude Records. It peaked at #18 in the UK. The ballad is considered a favourite among fans and is one of their most notable songs of this period. The B-side, "Modern Boys", appears as an album track in the U.S. edition of Dog Man Star. The single also features a version of "Introducing the Band" by electronic pioneer Brian Eno.

Brett Anderson has said on numerous occasions that he regards this song as not only the highmark of his writing partnership with Bernard Butler, but his favourite of all Suede songs.

The "Wild Ones" music video was filmed in Dartmoor and was directed by Howard Greenhalgh. The video cost £150,000, most of it for computer special effects

So the songs left (in alphabetical order)

Animal Nitrate

Metal Mickey

The Beautiful Ones

PREDIX away! :D

The Wild Ones

Such a grower, it would never have been my 11 before the re-issued albums but I've found myself listening to it so often since that it just had to receive it. The Beautiful Ones or, slightly preferably, Animal Nitrate to win please.

Metal Mickey top 3? Didn't see that coming.

The Wild Ones is absolutely gorgeous, whilst Stay Together is the greatest song of all time. Not the best Suede song of all time, the best song.

I got bored of The Wild Ones for a few years. Now I like it again.

Regarding the Top 3 - it was always going to be difficult for me to guess what was going to be in it apart from Animal Nitrate. Any of the Top 10 could have made it and I wouldn't have been shocked.

Edited by AnthonyT

Pretty sure I gave Metal Mickey the 11

But I'd predict Animal Nitrate will win

1. Animal Nitrate

2. Metal Mickey

3. Beautiful Ones

HIGHEST VOTE: 11 (Gezza)

LOWEST VOTE: 6

Personal Opinion: Clearly my Favourite Suede single of all time seeing as I gave it my 11 (Shame on the rest of you). It overtook "Trash" for that accolade over the years and now it is just aural heaven!

"Beautiful Ones" is the second single from the album Coming Up by Suede, released on October 14, 1996. on Nude Records. The song became a Top Ten hit in the UK, peaking at #8. British female singer Kim Wilde recorded a version of the song for her 2011 album "Snapshots".

The video for the title song was directed by Pedro Romhanyi, who previously made the video for the band's song, "Animal Nitrate
