 84. Never Knew Your Name - Madness

A track off their latest album - any reason this has suddenly jumped into the top 100?

Madness were on the Jonathon Ross show

Why doesn't he post anymore? I used to really like him, he always made me laugh.

He left because people kept bullying him on this website. He should have acknowledged deep down that none of this is real and not to get upset over what happens here.

VERY pleasing start for Amelia :D It should have been the song Girls Aloud came back with. 'Something New' was decent, I guess, but it was FAR too generic. This is definitely more of the GA sound which should have polished off their Greatest Hits era, nicely. (I'm fully aware I'm probably alone in thinking this :P)

People tease a lot on here sometimes. I remember once when people were making fun of someone, someone said that they didn't like the way he was being treated, and I posted to say I agree, and then a mod, yes a MODERATOR said "Don't jump on the bandwagon" or something like that. That says it all really.

I never visit certain parts of this forum, because I don't like the attitude of certain people, and I know I'd never talk or get along with 90% of the people on here in real life, I'm just here for the chart discussion.

I don't agree with that, Jonjo. 'Something New' was the perfect comeback single IMO.

It's the same for me as well, i joined this website in February last year only for the UK chart discussion and midweeks info although now i do post in some other forums but not in the lounge.

In the lounge around Christmas time they did the 2012 Buzzjack Awards and almost everyone probably barring 2 or 3 people voted me as "the poster who represents the worst of buzzjack" and "the biggest waste of sperm" with the intention of trying to hurt my feelings but in the end i just laughed it off because it was so pathetic.

It looks like it wont take that long for Amelia Lily to enter the top 10.

It wasn't GA though. :( It was far too generic for them and although it clicked with me more once I'd seen the performances and stuff, I still never properly loved it like I should have with GA. SU(AGMWYG) although it's generic for Amelia, it's only generic in the sense that Girls Aloud have kind of perfected the Xenomania sound and considering SN was launching a new greatest hits campaign, it would have been nice for them to have gone for something more like this/most their other stuff, than some Calvin Harris-generic mess. :( (All imo obvz :P)

Not to mention it's lacking in the percussion department, lacking a memorable or catchy chorus, and that the entire song consists of basically just one synth melody. Did they not learn after the success of Somebody That I Used to Know and Niggas in Paris last year that maybe it's a good idea to have lots of things going on at the same time in a song? It's like the music you hear in elevators, just really loud.

Something New reminded me a lot of All Fired Up by The Saturdays. Like the song is trying really hard to be anthemic, but it just isn't. And the funny thing is, I've never heard either of those songs in a club before, and probably never will. If these girl groups want an "anthemic" song, they need to hook up with someone like Rudimental or Disclosure imo.

Sorry Eric, but as much as I'm not much of a fan of SN, I have to disagree in that there was (or is) a hook/memorable chorus (or at least somewhere within the song). But I think maybe it had TOO much going on for it, so it sounded like one big mess, so it was harder for the public to connect with? The public like their pop songs, simple and easy listening. I think SN may have been a little too hard hitting and was a bit much for something which should have been just a nice, little, throwaway pop anthem.

In regards to the songs you used as examples, they worked as they're not in the same "pop" category as you'd put 'Something New'. Hip-Hop songs are no strangers to being different with their structure and what not, that's why NIP worked. Gotye had the massive hook and melody and the fact it was completely different to anything we'd heard of before in the UK charts (and I say this as someone who has been pretty vocal about STIUTK and I find NIP good, but overrated).

But I think maybe it had TOO much going on for it

It doesn't though, that's what I mean. Listen to it, it's just that ONE synth, but really, really loud. Gotye's song is like 10 different instruments, but all much quieter, and all playing different melodies and rhyhtmns, so Gotye's song has much more going on in it, and is much more complex (and much more fun for me to listen to).

Some beats that have been in the charts recently, especially ones like Don't Wake Me Up and Starships/Pound the Alarm I can tell are mainly just one synth that's heavily compressed and EQ'ed, with some reverb, etc. and it makes the song sound really loud complex even though there's hardly any more going on in them than there is in Someone Like You.

For what it's worth, you're one of my favourite posters on here, since you are a lot like my friends. I hope I win those awards next time.

50. Amelia Lily - Shut Up (And Give Me Whatever You Got)

Glad to see Amelia this high so far! :D

As a matter of interest, does anyone remember where 'You Bring Me Joy' started? It was a single pre-order too so it's comparable. I seem to remember it being much higher but I don't remember quite how much higher it was.
And that was an iTunes #1 in a healthy sales climate. I think Shut Up is quite safe for top 10 in that case.

I've never understood the Calvin Harris comparison. SN could easily fit on Tangled Up.

James Arthur is holding up very well, XF winners have usually bombed right down the charts by now.

Predictions n stuff;

24 - Paramore - Now - They have a decent-sized fanbase, i think

Amazon says 24th February for this.

Why doesn't he post anymore? I used to really like him, he always made me laugh.

Because everyone kept taking the piss out of him.

And Pablo, I didn't vote for you to hurt your feelings. I voted for you because you were an awful poster. But you've improved since then so keep it up! :D
