So, Les Mis has taken the Number One spot on the album charts. What confuses me is that Les Mis is eligible for the actual album chart whereas the Pitch Perfect soundtrack is on the Compilation Chart. What's the difference??

I think a certain % of songs on the album have to include the same singer/s for it to appear on the artist album chart.

But the majority of songs on the Pitch Perfect soundtrack are by The Barden Bellas!!

Also... if I remember well the label can decide then if they want to chart the album in the compilations or in the artist albums. But I can be wrong.

it depends on who performs on the album in terms of the musicians. If it is always the same orchestra and musicians for example then the record company can ask for it to be registered as an artist album regardless of the vocalist.

Surely all labels would want the albums to chart on the album chart so that they get more recognition?

It depends in the sales climate i guess which would affect their decision - A record company would rather claim a Top 5 smash compilation album than a #26 artist chart one.

I thought it might be because the Pitch Perfect (and Mamma Mia I think) were credited as "Various Artists" as opposed to "The cast of...". But I think I'm wrong on that, so take with a lot of salt :P

"When "Evita" charted in 1996 MW said "Evita qualifies for the artist chart rather than the compilation chart because it was put together for the purpose using the same backing musicans thoughout, regardless of whether the vocalist was Madonna or not, which in most cases it was. Waiting to Exhale OST could also have been made eligible for the artist chart last year as all the songs were written, produced and played on by Babyface but Arista chose not to do so".

Thusly Les Mis is eligible for the album chart. Confusion over :D

In 2008/2009, the 'Mamma Mia!'Soundtrack was an 11 Week No.1 in the Compilation Chart,

& the 'Mamma Mia!' Original Cast Album was a No.12 Album, in the Artist, (Main), Album Chart.

They were both Charting at the same time - but in different Charts.
