Hot 100 News: Billboard and Nielsen Add YouTube Video Streaming

"Billboard is now incorporating all official videos on YouTube captured by Nielsen's streaming measurement, including Vevo on YouTube, and user-generated clips that utilize authorized audio into the Hot 100 and the Hot 100 formula-based genre charts – Hot Country Songs, Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs, R&B Songs, Rap Songs, Hot Latin Songs, Hot Rock Songs and Dance/Electronic Songs – to further reflect the divergent platforms for music consumption in today's world."

So this actually bodes well for 1D's Comic Relief song for next week then? Could easily bode for a Top 10 debut with the 1D loons streaming the song on Vevo to death?

WHAT?! 'Harlem Shake' is straight in at number 1?! What was the last song to debut at number 1? Was it Taylor with 'We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together', or did that climb?

Ugh. Biggest piece of trash I've heard since I heard 'Variation of Birds' a while ago! :puke:

RiRi and Justin smashing with their new ones though <3

The last song to debut at #1 was Part of Me by Katy Perry (and that almost climbed to #1, it charted at #1 on the bubbling under chart the week before, so had it had just a tiny bit more airplay that week, it would've charted in the Hot 100, meaning the last debut would've been Born This Way by Lady Gaga).

It's funny though, I was really thinking we'd probably never see a song debut at #1 on the Hot 100 again with streaming added, but now it'd probably be possible again, if a big artist released a pre-album single with its music video on the release day and had a radio deal. But with post-album singles the best strategy would be to release the music video when sales and airplay are peaking.

Drake and Rihanna have Youtube to thank for the fact that they're in the top 10 this week. I wonder where Lil Wayne has chart as well.

I think this change will hurt adult contemporary artists a lot though (I Will Wait, Ho Hey and others were looking to benefit more from the Grammys). Also country songs will chart even worse (the inclusion of Spotify, etc. already hurt them significantly).

It also means un-released songs, leaked tracks, live performances and songs from mixtapes could potentially chart on the Hot 100. It happened before, like I remember Jay-Z did a little song about his newborn baby on the Internet last year and it managed to chart on the urban airplay chart, but that sort of thing will happen more often if they get a lot of Youtube views.

I think the main reason they did this was because Gangnam Style missed #1 using their old chart methods.

I'm honestly annoyed quite a bit.

Prepare for stupid memes and EVERY ONE DIRECTION SONG to debut at #1 from here on out.

Billboard is always so out of touch when it comes to revamping their methodologies.

Does Baauer have a chance of making the US Billboard #1? After PSY was denied topping the chart it makes me wonder if airplay/streaming will go against 'Harlem Shake' too despite it clearly becoming the new phenomenon around the world.

Would appear so

I don't think so, it makes no sense. I think only officially uploaded (by the music/recording company) videos' streams count. Counting any other video stream would be so stupid.

"Billboard is now incorporating all official videos on YouTube .. including Vevo on YouTube, and user-generated clips that utilize authorized audio .. "

is 'authorized audio' the original track?

Oh my god, that is a HUGE change to the chart rules, resulting in an instant #1 for Baauer? :o Bieber, Taylor and 1D will all be significantly adding to their top 5 haul's from this point onwards then...

Yep, not covers or anything like that, where the original track is used in a YT video and YT recognises it as such.

Anyway I echo the sentiment that this is the stupidest thing ever. But at least it will make the US chart look more like the UK one.

It's not "stupidiest thing ever", actually it's qite right. But it's not right that a song selling much more and with HIGHER airplay can still chart below a Youtube hit is just crazy.

To be honest, I think this is a good thing. They are the most popular stars in the US and the singles chart should reflect that. And if it means that radio play counts a little less then that is fine too.

Watching a soundtracked novelty/funny Youtube video is hardly the same as parting with cash to purchase a song. Jahq's point was valid, imagine how big Friday would have been under this system! Nobody actually wanted to buy the song, and it hardly 'deserved' to be a major hit, but it would have been because of the video/general crapness whilst selling precious little!

It has its pros and cons, at least it's better than including airplay which isn't dictated by consumers in any way.

Though maybe Maroon 5's One More Night wouldn't have topped the charts for 9 weeks denying Psy the spot. So...swings and roundabouts.
I am still yet to hear Harlem Shake and I intend to keep it that way.
