July 4, 201312 yr LEWIS YOU BABE. It's fine that I waited that long when you loved it so much and wrote a super detailed review! And now that I've taken SO LONG to actual tell you what the tracks are, I'd say we're completely even. So here they are: 001 / Gang Gang Dance - Glass Jar One of the most mesmerising and expansive tracks of the decade so far. Absolute masterpiece yes? Definitely the only way to open this CD! I never thought about a Kate Bush comparison, but I suppose you're right! Interlude I / High Places - You In Forty Years Well we needed to CALM DOWN after that exhilaration. High Places are a lovely duo perfect for the job. 002 / Pantha Du Prince - Lay In A Shimmer 'Live concert held in a sewer' omg. I listened to the Plaid track and it sounded pretty interesting! Like you said, you hear something new every listen in this track. And the drop at 1.48 is marvellous, as you've said. 003 / Caribou - Niobe Another track with ALL sorts going on. You should listen to the last 45 seconds again: possibly my favourite outro to a track or album ever. SO UPLIFTING after all that ~dark~ sounding stuff beforehand. Interlude II / Future Islands - In Evening Air Beauty. 004 / Elite Gymnastics - Is This On Me It does sound VERY Air France! Elite Gymnastics were cool dudes and they're very much welcome to be part of the most euphoric moment on this CD. 005 / SLEEP ∞ OVER - Romantic Streams We start a run of Crystal Castles soundalikes here. Crystal Castles gone seductive. 006 / White Ring - Roses Full-on Witch House Crystal Castles indeed! 007 / HEALTH - USA Boys I couldn't BELIEVE you don't know track! Glad you've finally listened to it and loved it! 008 / Clams Casino - I'm God Yep, I was trying to make a dark-ish CD but I couldn't resist putting in something oh very slightly euphoric. 009 / Teengirl Fantasy - Dancing In Slow Motion (feat. Shannon Funchess) I checked your last.fm and only put tracks that aren't in your library, which is why you aern't super-familiar with any of them! Interlude III / Neon Indian - Heart:Attack Unlike so many other buzzartists, Neon Indian's second album was both different and better than his still-marvellous first. This is how he introduced it and yes, it really is great. 010 / Porcelain Raft - Backwords You now know and love his new track, 'Think Of The Ocean'. This is the best track on his lovely Strange Weekend album. Sparkling and euphoric synths indeed, but still fitting into the more mellow tone of the CD. It sounds quite SAD anyway. 011 / How To Dress Well - Decisions (feat. Yuksel Arslan) Knew you'd love this! <3 HEAVENLY. Interlude IV / Wild Beasts - Underbelly Hails back to my INDIE ROCK days of 2008-2010. Dark days. This is just one track, but I wish its second part could last forever. The first part isn't too shabby either, with those haunting vocals. 012 / Grizzly Bear - Foreground (live) I think I put the live version in, right? Either way, it's probably in my top 20 tracks of all time. Very sparse/empty-feeling (in the lyrics too!) and yet with so many instruments and so much going on at the same time. I love how Crystal Castles' 'Tell Me What To Swallow' finishes off their début album perfectly but in complete contrast to their other tracks, and this closes the otherwise energetic and sprawling 'Veckatimest' similarly. GAH. 013 / f*** Buttons - Sweet Love For Planet Earth I've put f*** Buttons in each CD I've made so I've got to keep up traditions! When I heard this track, it really made Alice Glass sound rather SWEET. 'Cutting saw-synth' - HA! I love how you visualise the sounds. ~deep~ Outro / Grouper - Heavy Water/I'd Rather Be Sleeping Not a standout WOT. Ben would not be happy. But I suppose when every track is excellent (imho of course), it's difficult for anything to stand out at all. :D Particularly pleased you loved the last four or so tracks just as much as the rest of the CD, despite them not being totally your thing - so I have introduced you to new stuff despite us having similar tastes (that sounds like a complete contradiction of what I just said... w/e) - woo!
July 4, 201312 yr I think it's only mine to be reviewed now, although I'm not holding out hope for it.
July 4, 201312 yr I know I didn't even take part in this but I'd love to hear yours Harve if you still have a link!
July 4, 201312 yr I think it's only mine to be reviewed now, although I'm not holding out hope for it. RabbitFurCoat, although I understand that there are reasons for the delay. I'd always been meaning to do it and actually had most of it done then my laptop packed up all of a sudden and I lost that and a fair bit of other stuff, it's why I became even MORE absent than I already was recently, but I have a new one now and I'm doing nothing this weekend (and the next few as I desperately need to stop spending money!) so I shall at least post something about each track even if it's not a full review, there are still tracks on there that I'd like to know what they are. PROMISE I shall keep this time! Luckily I had backed up the actual CD along with all my other music over the second May Bank Holiday. But yes, I've been a bit pre-occupied recently with various things... P.S. The CD I made hasn't been reviewed yet either, has it Pavel? Edited July 4, 201312 yr by RabbitFurCoat
July 6, 201312 yr omg I'm such a lazy shit. One half of the CD HAS been reviewed though. IT'S COMING.
July 8, 201312 yr oh thats awkward i didn't know USA boys considering i saw them support CC AND its one of the big indie hits of the last 5 years!! (oh dear.) nice to see some names i know in there, high places (i downloaded their album "high places vs. mankind" on the back of 'on giving up' and didn't give it much of a listen!), how to dress well, elite gymnastics (i've finally been introduced!! friends of grimes doesn't last long as an identifier)! and WHITE RING THATS IT. think i went through like 10 of their songs trying to find bjsc potentials so that'll be how i know them!!! thanks v much for putting that together <3
July 8, 201312 yr 01 - I quite like this one, a decent opener. Like the almost folksey feel to it. 02 - Again this one is quite good, a vocal reasonably similar to James Murphy but with some distortion. Nice and short, don't think it would suit being longer. 03 - One of my favourites on here, an excellent intro and a nice summery feel 04 - I really don't like the vocal on this one, would probably be alright otherwise. 05 - This sounds like it's by someone familiar but I can't place it at all. I do like it a lot though. 06 - This is ok but I suspect it would get really annoying if I listened more than a few times. 07 - I don't mind this but it doesn't seem to go anywhere, I prefer the female vocal to the male; Sounds Pipette-y 08 - Another of the standouts, decent female fronted indie-pop song. 09 - This sounds like that Japanese band you like a lot and I... well, don't. 10 - Elbow 'Leaders of the Free World' - Not sure whether this was included as the CD was made for me or not, I suspect it was though, definitely one of their most underrated songs, love the way it builds and a fantastic chorus. 11 - This one is horrible, worst song on here. Far too shouty. 12 - This isn't that dissimilar to the last one but it is a bit better. I recognise this from listening to your Best of 2012 chart which is at least something even if I don't particularly like it. 13 - Decent indie tune this one, again it's a little shouty in the backing but less 'rock' so I quite like this one. 14 - This is a nice change from the last three, again it's nice anf folky, if Fleet Foxes went upbeat. 15 - I can't decide on this one, I think it's ok but I do think I'll end up hating it with the brass. Certainly sounds very American. 16 - I like this one, best for a while. Nice and chilled. 17 - Female with a piano isn't always the best combination but this is alright at least. 18 - Cashier No. 9 'Make You Feel Better' - love their album which I wouldn't have downloaded if it wasn't for you, this is one of the best tracks on it. 19 - Not a fan of this one, find it a bit boring. 20 - This is a rather nice ending. A nice instrumental with some decent solos in it of what seems like varying instruments. Sounds very 80s in parts. Again, sorry it's taken so long, but too much stuff got in the way for me to really do it as you can probably tell by how little I've posted here in comparison to usual. It's not like I hadn't been listening to it. Overall it's a decent listen. Of the 18 I didn't know it probably splits into three equal sections of songs I really like and will listen to fairly regualrly, songs I quite like and will definitely keep and songs which I don't like and shall delete. Which I think is a decent success ratio for one of these.

Which I think is a decent success ratio for one of these. This one was indeed mine. Keeping with the pattern of previous releases, the artwork for this one is taken from an anime series, in this case it is "Bodacious Space Pirates": http://i114.photobucket.com/albums/n244/beanochris/SillySillyAlbumCover_zps3129a54a.jpg The title itself has no bearing on either the series nor this compilation, which went as such: 1. The Burning of Rome - Ballad of An Onion Sprout. They're an American band, I quite liked this song which was released last year as it sounded like 4 Blondie songs rolled into one. 2. Crash & The Coots - Don't Kill Bugs The band hail from the South West of England, this one was released at the start of this year. They remind me of a ridiculously lo-fi Flaming Lips. 3. Gypsy & The Cat - Bloom I've loved this Australian band since "The Piper's Song", so obviously loved this track as well despite the change of direction. Incidentally, in the time since I compiled this playlist and now the song has been featured in a high-profile camera advert which has been played incessantly at cinemas. 4. Eugene McGuinness - Sugarplum Eugene McGuinness toured with Miles Kane and has links to the Arctic Monkeys, but last year's 'Invitation to the Voyage' album saw him make some smart electro-pop. I'm disappointed you didn't like this one, I find Mr McGuinness to be incredibly underrated. 5. B>E>A>K - Night Owls My most successful Unknown Pleasures entry in ages, the Newcastle group B>E>A>K make an appearance, with their first ever vocal track. 6. We Were Evergreen - Leeway This song from the French trio is perhaps my favourite song of 2013 so far. 7. The Dancers - For Something In Your Eyes Another French trio responsible for one of my favourite songs of 2013 (see a pattern emerging?). They played Glastonbury last week. 8. Wonder Villains - Chiller Whale Well, I couldn't not fit in my favourite Derry pop group, could I? This was the b-side to their "TV" single released at the tail-end of 2012. More energy than a gram of unobtainium. 9. Shonen Knife - Pop Tune Definitely a marmite band. I assume you're not a fan of yeast-extracted toast toppers. 10. Elbow - Leaders of The Free World One of their best pre-Seldom Seen Kid tracks, which seems to have been somewhat overlooked by many. Had I known this compilation was for you, I probably wouldn't have included it. 11. Empty Lungs - Till The Day We Die Belfast based punk. Not for everyone. 12. Kept Under Glass - I Don't Even Like Clubs Another NI punky band. Likewise, not for everybody, but I'd agree that it's better than the last one. 13. Amateur Historians - These Cities Are Stealing My Soul The last of this particular Norn Iron trilogy. Indie-rock in the early Ash mode. 14. Port Isla - Sinking Ship A great folk tune which set the blogs alight late last year. Also recently played Glastonbury. 15. Reel Big Fish - Don't Let Me Down Gently Seminal ska punk group with a cover of The Wonder Stuff's song of the same name. 16. Chapterhouse - Pearl A shoegaze classic from the early 90s. One of my favourite tunes from the decade. 17. I Am Not Left Handed - Screamager Irish trio with a radically different cover of Therapy?'s grunge hit. Would love to see this used in a John Lewis advert. 18. Cashier No.9 - The Lighthouse Will Lead You Out Likewise, had I known this compilation was for you I probably wouldn't have included this one. One of Northern Ireland's best/underrated groups. 19. Mic Christopher - Heyday The song was most famously featured in an ad for Guinness featuring a pre-fame Michael Fassbender. Mic Christopher tragically died after falling down some steps in 2001 - this song and the subsequent album was put together by Glen Hansard (The Frames, Once). 20. Mark Knopfler - Going Home (Theme of the Local Hero) And to finish off, the ending theme for classic British film Local Hero (featuring a pre-Malcolm Tucker Peter Capaldi). Whilst Knopfler is best known for his role in Dire Straits, he's also composed the soundtracks for several films, including this one, The Princess Bride & Wag The Dog. This song is apparently the running-on-to-the-pitch music for Newcastle United. Glad there were some tracks on the mix that you liked.
February 25, 201411 yr It's still in my ipod and I was halfway through so yeah it will be done by May 2017 perhaps? :o
February 25, 201411 yr I still have the one I received on my desktop. I might listen to it this weekend if I remember. Probably won't. Will make sure to take part properly in the next one of these (if I'm allowed to that is).
