April 23, 201312 yr Explain Daft Punk. They are also producers so they don't have quite as much of a problem there. Although I would say their image of two robot-like people (which compliments the music very well) who never show their faces and never appearing in videos is actually a USP. Union J - From brief images I've seen, I unfortunately see nothing standing out about these guys. I will listen to the song though...
April 23, 201312 yr I know nothing about them, so I can't comment, but I can't see why their image would matter any less than that of any other act. Because image has never ever affected how people perceive their material. People don't buy the music because of their image. They don't even have a particular image (unless you would accept the robot heads which literally leave no one feeling tempted to buy their material). People buy the music because their songs are bloody brilliant. Another example are The Pogues. Edited April 23, 201312 yr by Grief

People buy the music because their songs are bloody brilliant. Another example are The Pogues. But I don't mean visuals. I mean how an act presents themselves. You may disagree but I am 100% certain that people are more/less likely to properly get behind an act based on how they portray themselves as artists. If Pitbull and a random new act brought out the exact same song, I'd be more likely to buy the new act's album, because Pitbull comes across as terminally vapid and simply doesn't present himself in the way I like artists to. If Daft Punk have no particular image then that's an image in itself - they're "mysterious" and "edgy".
April 23, 201312 yr I think its important the image compliments the music. The Pogues were never aiming for a mainstream pop song market, so the image doesn't need to be the same as One Direction's, but its still an image - a seedy Irish rock band, and the music is just like this. (they also weren't that successful in the UK, the obvious aside) Likewise, Daft Punk. They were far more centred on storytelling and visual effects than pop music, and this was complimented well in their music, it was edgy, different, experimental. If you are releasing mainstream pop music for a young audience, image is vital. Without it, you won't sell. Edited April 23, 201312 yr by Chez Wombeux
April 23, 201312 yr But tbf, artists always say that. Haven't Enrique, Olly Murs and other acts promised to do the same if they "get to number 1"? True, but I get the impression they're quite confident people/artists. Obviously people know George is conscious about his look, from his childhood, and promising this, and actually delivering it - and hopefully getting a good response - it would make him see there's nothing to worry about, because people love him and his body. :P

April 26, 201312 yr I much prefer Union J to 1D, I've warmed to them a lot more. 1D are just iritating and they just look like little boys
April 29, 201312 yr Wow. The performance scenes are terrible! The "story" parts are decent enough, should've made more of those and sacked off the "open mic night" bits. Jaymi looks surprisingly good.
April 29, 201312 yr Dull video aside, I really quite like the song. Better than anything One Direction have done anyway, and about half of the Wanted's singles.
April 29, 201312 yr I still love Stole My Heart from One Direction's debut. But their singles have been terrible and I don't have the energy or the will to check out the second album. I find it depressing how little personality they display in interviews etc. Hopefully Union J will prove to have a little more about them.
April 29, 201312 yr Awww. Quite a sweet but meh video (which is ok because i wasn't really expecting much from it anyway). They all look so scrumptious, and i'm liking their styling/attitude throughout it. Still loving the song too and it's FAST becoming my favourite boyband single (The Wanted aside), which is what i hoped for whilst looning for them throughout X Factor.
April 29, 201312 yr It's quite good. I like it. Bit I love this type of cheesy, manufactured pop music so all bleh really. Looking back on the past few debates. The time has gone now, but image certainly is everything especially in the pop market. Even if you're not that good looking, a one hour make-over can make you look a lot aesthetically appealing. One Direction will always get the better songs, and producers because they're One Direction. As much as I love them, to this day I can't quite fathom how they became so massive. I wouldn't even call them that good-a-looking boyband. They certainly have a lot to thank Justin Bieber for.
