June 21, 201312 yr Hang on though - I'm pretty certain Dancing Queen has sold over 1 million? Was released prior to 1980, the starting point of this thread. Out of interest, was Dr Alban's It's My Life excluded because he was born in Nigeria. I've read before that he's 'Swedish' but I don't know if he has Swedish citizenship or if he just lives there.
June 21, 201312 yr Great to see Take On Me on such high sales! Easily the best song of the top 3 (obviously counting 2013 sales it is no longer top 3 thanks to SHM) Saturday Night is good but a little on the cheesy side. As for Barbie Girl, probably the cheesiest song ever - I don't want to ever listen to it again
June 21, 201312 yr Was released prior to 1980, the starting point of this thread. Surely it greeatly devalues the thread then, excluding most of the output of by far the most successful Scandipop act of all?
June 21, 201312 yr Not really. That's like saying that his best selling albums of the 90s list was devalued by excluding Thriller's 80s sales.
June 21, 201312 yr The thread is of 1980-2012, it doesn't claim to reflect anything before that. So not really. EDIT: What Dandy* said. Edited June 21, 201312 yr by Bré
June 21, 201312 yr But apart from Abba, were there *any* Scandipop acts before 1980 anyway? :P Nope, Norway and Finland didn't invent music until 1984 and in Sweden it was only available to the people of Stockholm or those who owned a Grade II moustache (longer than 20 cm). But seriously.. great thread Gezza. Good to see A-ha at #3! Shame about the rest of the Top 2. :P Edited June 21, 201312 yr by Doctor Blind
June 21, 201312 yr But apart from Abba, were there *any* Scandipop acts before 1980 anyway? :P Well there were the Spotnicks from Sweden. I tried to post a a Youtube link but it wouldn't let me. Very strange, what's with the space suits? Edited June 21, 201312 yr by Col1967
June 22, 201312 yr As for Barbie Girl, probably the cheesiest song ever - I don't want to ever listen to it again  If you think Aqua's bad, try listening to a group called Toy-Box, a blatant Aqua ripoff that only got as high as #41 here but were huge in Scandinavia. Despite being a massive cheesy pop fan even I can barely stomach their songs :P
June 22, 201312 yr My brother downloaded a Toybox song once. I believe the highlight was the lyric "hey monkey, get funky".
June 23, 201312 yr Nope, Norway and Finland didn't invent music until 1984 and in Sweden it was only available to the people of Stockholm or those who owned a Grade II moustache (longer than 20 cm). But seriously.. great thread Gezza. Good to see A-ha at #3! Shame about the rest of the Top 2. :P My original point was that : ISTM the only reason the 1980 cut-off date was chosen, was to avoid Abba (rightly IMO) totally dominating this list. It's like asking people to name the Best Ever British Pop Group, but specifying 1970 as a start date... Edited June 23, 201312 yr by vidcapper

I think the reason why this thread doesn't include the 70s is because Geeza does not have enough sales information for songs pre-dating 1980. I'm sure Buzzjack wouldn't have minded ABBA dominating the list
